Hello just stumbled on your channel. I too have just got back into sewing seriously after MANY years. Have found a YT channel Sew With Sally really really helpful for sewing clothes that fit well.
Hi lovely to RUclips meet you. Thank you for the channel recommendation 🧵👍🙏
Hi Becca, love your podcasts, I am trying to spin this week not successful yet. I plan to block some yarn, I tend to spin and play and stick in a bag so it is a lovely sunny day and time to block those skeins. I am rusty on my sewing also, I think I would sew the two facings on the short seams, and the yokes short seams. This probably isn't any better than your instructions. Yes I would zig zag any seam that isn't going to be included. I plan to sew up a button down top. Next time I would pin the instruction bits onto the material where it pertains. Again thank you for a lovely video.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. It sounds like you have lots to keep you busy. 🌀🧶🐏🌸
Hello, I love traveling, gardening, flowers and sewing. I am working on a few different projects at the moment. A blouse, and eyeglass case, and lining for some baskets. I just got some new fabrics so I am inspired and ready to tackle the projects. I live in the USA, Ohio.
Hi Nancy 👋. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏. How wonderful to have new fabric. Enjoy 🧵
In Australia we call them op shops (opportunity shops) or vinnies or salvos… I have been a quilter (I use the term loosely as I’m not as precise as a quilter should be) I also have embroidered and do a little crochet. I am semi retired…only working a short shift every fortnight now and will be receiving the pension in2 weeks time! Having just downsized into a one bedroom miners cottage in a smaller town I am really looking forward to making some of my own clothes….i buy sheets or cotton clothes and change them to make something for me to wear. I am enjoying the challenge. Like someone else here I watch Rosery apparel on utube and enjoy watching her. I’m a Newby to your channel and love the area where you walk…so green compared to where I live.
Thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment. Good with your retirement. Your cottage sounds delightful. Thank you for the channel recommendation 🙏🧶🐏🧵
I am quilting, sewing, crocheting, cross stitching, gardening. Loving it. So glad I took up more hobbies after retiring. 😊
Wonderful! 👍🧶🧵
Congratulations 🎉❤❤❤
Hi, I normally do cross stitch but the last few months I've been busy knitting. I'm working on an international project with our local Mother's Rebellion group here in The Netherlands. We will come together tomorrow outside the EU parliament with people from nine different countries, to present our joint project. A 2km knitted red scarf. Our request is that our governments abide by the promises made in the Paris Agreement. We are in a climate emergency, we must not ignore this problem any longer ❤
You're projecting sounds amazing. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏🧵🧶
I'm making needle books with left-over patchwork fabrics. During winter I have knitted scarves for friends and gloves for me. Prefer sewing but knitting is good therapy as it uses a different part of the brain.
How interesting I didn't know that. Thank you for leaving a comment 🌀🧶🧵
Hi, I went back to dressmaking in retirement, having not sewn for over 30 years! It has been a real lifesaver, opening up a whole Instagram sewing community, several of whom have become friends irl. I’m currently working on a dress - the Fleur dress by Fabric Godmother. Just working on the skirt now and you are so right about carving out creative time! ❤️
Thanks for sharing!! The community is the best part of doing RUclips so I get it . It's lovely to have you here. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏🧶
I am trying to find a skill I have in retirement to use as income. I tried sewing and selling. That takes the joy out of the project. I always said to my family I am busy from such ans such a time so I do not get disturbed.
Congratulations 🎉🎉🎉🎉
In Australia it's an "op shop" but we know exactly what you mean :). One of my secret pleasures is exploring op shops for sewing and knitting supplies.
I am a life long bargain hunter. I love a charity shop / op shop find 😁🧵🧶
I'm making my first Project DressAGirl dress using a fabric from my Mum's stay that I inherited a long time ago.
That sounds like a great project . I have never heard of it so thank you for posting it here 🙏.
Love your videos! Retired 2 years and you have captured it beautifully. Still trying to find my way. Much love!
Thank you so much! 🙏
❤❤
What you call charity shops, in Australia we mostly call "Op Shops", short for opportunity, but they are almost always run by charities or community groups.
I'm currently spinning sock yarn and trying to get off sleeve island with my Seaglass pullover. I've not been able to find my sewing mojo since September last year, I was sewing a pair of linen trousers when I went into labour, and they are still waiting to be finished. I'm really looking forward to seeing how your blouse/dress comes out. You radiate authenticity and what a crafting/creative life honestly looks like for most people, and I'm sure that's very much part of what people are drawn to in your videos. 🐑🐑🐑🐕🌻
Thank you, I was going to explain about Op Shops.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I love the idea of an "op shop" . Thank you for letting me know.
Hi from edinburgh you re so right about retirement it’s hard finding time for yourself you wonder how you fitted in work
Hi 👋. I know, how did I ever have time to work a job 🤣.
Hi, from Australia. I have just come across your video so my comment may be unnecessary, but it might be simpler to cut the smaller pieces out roughly and then trim them to the right size, name your pieces by writing info on a piece of calico and safety pin it your piece, also when cutting out it maybe simpler to along the outline without using the full length of the scissors. Cut a certain length and move the scissors along to cut a bit more without taking them out of the material.
Hope this helps or makes sense thanks for the video I enjoyed it . Barb. Australia
Thank you 🙏 all tips are very welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🧵🌸
Hi Becca, I live in BC, Canada and we call the shops you refer to as Thrift Shops. '' Thrifting'' is very big here.
Thank you for the information. 🌀🐏🧶
It is sew the two flowery yokes together at the shoulder seams. Then sew the two lining pieces together at the shoulder seams
Yep I've re-pinned it and it now makes perfect sense.
@@bybeccalewis Yay for RUclips! And for you!
I'm knitting a poncho for myself and a jumper for my daughter(19) We call charity shops "Op Shops" here in Australia. Anne 🐨
Hi Anne . Your projects sound wonderful thank you for the info. 🧵🙏🧶
Here in Germany we don't have your kind of thrift shops. We have Second- Hand - Shops that are commercial enterprises with pricetags similar or above C&A, H&M or similar shops. Eco concious young women shop there. And we have real charity shops, that are only accessible to people with a low or no income and a special card they have to show at the entrance and to the exit. Everything is free of charge. How much they can take is restricted as well. The idea is to provide them with necessities not to enable them to resell the goods.
Thank you that is so interesting. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏🧵🧶.
I’m currently knitting, cross-stitching and slow stitching small pieces 😊
What fun . Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏🧶🧵
In NZ ists an Op Shop. Short for opportunity shop
I don't think you're doing it wrong but it might be an idea to pin a piece of paper with instructions onto each piece before you sew. Maybe it could help 😂 x
Thank you 🙏. This project has been a great way of relearning and yes pinning the names of each piece would have been a simple solution. Never mind I will do that next time around. 🧵🙏
Becca this is a great project!! When you held up the front piece it looked like it would fit ok! The gathering will help with more room in the bust too. Congrats on finding those panels!
Thank you. It really should fit. I wouldn't have chosen that style normally but such a bargain I will not mind if I mess it up and never wear it.
I’m trying to learn to sew. My mother was an exceptional sewer and I never paid attention to sewing. Now she’s passed and I have become interested in sewing. Is not easy.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment 🧵. I am finding the sewing is coming back quickly. However I have been leaving to weave which I have never done before and that I am finding hard . I totally understand how hard it is to learn something new. Keep plodding on is my only advice. Good luck I'm sure it will click soon.🧵
Hi I’m in Australia and we call thrift stores op shops which is short for opportunity shop🌻
Thank you for the info 😊
What am I working on?? I am making some birthday bunting for my granddaughter. I'm using a French vintage sheet as the "flag" part and 2 different patterns for the letters. I am packing for a month in Spain and I plan to take some needle felting projects, plus some scrap sewing projects (I've seen a great video to make some small baskets) , a boro/shashiko project - an old denim jacket which I am covering with vintage Laura Ashley fabrics and using shashiko stitching to anchor it. Thanks for sharing
Your projects sound wonderful. Have a wonderful time in Spain. 🧵🌸
Two different quilts, just finished Christmas quilt.
Lovely have fun 🧵
Hi Becca just found your channel, i love home making, gardening and sewing both dressmaking and soft furnishings. I’m busy harvesting my Bramleys. I’m als9min the middle of making a sweatshirt and want to buy some autumnal material to make some cushions.😊
Welcome!! . Your project sounds great 🧵. Have a fab Sunday 🧵
❤❤ sewing is my retirement plan and have been building it all year.
How exciting good luck with your plans. 👋🧵
Hi Becca , you’re very clever deciphering that pattern! Too hard basket for me need clear instructions that I can go back to over time.. or will give up in frustration 😊
Thank you so kind of you . . I had some very helpful tips from folks on here which really got me unstuck 🧵
In Australia, we use all the terms, including ‘Op’ shop, which is short for ‘Opportunity Shop’ 😊
Love that! Thank you for the information.🙏🌀
I would suggest that you cut out the pattern piece names and pin them to the pattern pieces to which they belong. The pre-printed pattern is a good idea in theory that didn't work out nearly as well in practice.
My current project: I'm right near the end of making a red cap for a 6 - 12 month old child. (This references a Kristine Vike video on the topic of red caps.) The cap is a gift for a pregnant friend, and goes with a little cardigan I've made which just needs the buttons and blocked. The cardigan is the 9 month old size, as the baby won't need it until next winter (Australian winter).
After that, I'm going to cure the second sock syndrome an earlier project developed.
It sounds like you have some fabulous projects going on. I think if my dress making skills were not so rusty I wouldn't be so worried about the whole project. It's just practice really and I may well gift it when it's finished tho an "op shop" . 🌀🧶🐏
I'm also learning to sew (without patterns, can't cope with the instructions) I taught myself to spin, dye, knit and crochet a few years ago, so also still learning there. Anyway I have just finished a ruff prototype of an adjustable maxi gathered skirt with waistband and ties, a gypsy skirt style petticoat to go underneath, tie on pockets all from a super king size old bedsheet and a box pleat skirt with waistband and zip from old curtains I had. Oh and a reversable circle skirt from bedsheets (this is not something I'll make again, didn't like how it hangs. Many mistakes but loads of lessons and will wear these around the house anyway. Decent ones will be made soon. Hahaha cutting I know what you mean - I was kneeling on the floor, my sewing table is half the size of yours - it's like sewing in a closet.
How fantastic. I love the idea of up cycling fabric. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏🧵
Just found your channel.....loving it !
Yay! Thank you! 🙏🧵🧶🤗
Hello from Northern Arizona!
I just completed making 10 girls dresses for "Project Dress a Girl Around the World 2024". I also completed two project bags for my cross stitching patterns. And finished a Halloween quilt. I love every minute of it.😍🌺
Hi 👋. I have just found out about this amazing project. I will be sharing the website in a video soon. I try to work a couple of videos ahead of time so it will not be for a couple of weeks. Thank you for sharing here 🧵🙏
Hi your video popped up and I must say a lot of what you said about time management in retirement was very interesting. I have 7 grown up children and 8 grandchildren which I often watch over during the school holidays. I also was caring for my elderly mother until recently so do appreciate my free time.
I am now fully retired and sometimes find time slips away from me if I don't have a to do list or schedule. Its amazing how productive one feels when ticking off, however small, achievements off the list. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Jules👋 so lovely to take the time to leave a message and say Hi . It sounds like you have a busy life. I do love a tick list too . 🐏🧶🌀🐏🧵
In Canada we call them Thrift Shops
Thank you for the info 🌸
good morning, I am sewing three little pair of newborn pants for my first grandchild. I am also knitting myself a pair of socks.
Sounds great! . I have second sock syndrome at the moment. Thank you for leaving a comment 🙏🧶🧵
Hi. I’m currently spinning alpaca for a sweater, which is taking AGES as I’m trying to spin as fine as possible as I’ve heard that alpaca can be very warm. (Fairly new to spinning but loving it). As I’m impatient I’ve started knitting it before the spinning is complete!!
How lovely. Yes Alpaca is very warm. As there are no crafting Police if you want to start knitting before you have finished the spin . Go for it . 🧶🐏🌀
Meant to say thoroughly enjoyed ur video thank you
I appreciate that! Thank you 🙏
I too am newly retired and have found my sewing mojo again. Also, I write left handed but do many other things right handed. I do bat (baseball) left. Haha. I think I spin left sided but my right hand leads and left hand does the finesse work. I like your smock. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏🧶🧵
Hi Becca. I'm sewing a dress using the McCalls M7948 pattern, knitting the Rosery jumper, a pair pf socks and a Tunisian Crochet blanket. I like to flit between different crafts as the mood takes me. I enjoy chatty, crafty style vlogs like yours, sharing a bit of your life, home, garden, walks, etc. The sound is much better on this video. I'm glad people have already corrected your sewing. I was hoping you wouldn't sew it incorrectly and it put you off before you really got started. I've not seen a pattern like that. It's intriguing. You could have pinned the piece name to it's corresponding pattern piece to know what's what. Happy sewing, Anita. X
Thank you for the sewing tips. I knew if I asked someone would put me right. It sounds like you have some fabulous projects to work. So grateful that you have taken the time to leave a comment 🙏🧶🐏🌀🧵
Hello Becca. I found you probably about two weeks ago and have been going through your videos since then. I am from South Australia. My main love is spinning and I both knit and crochet. I also want to get back into sewing.
You are very welcome. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment. 🧵🧶🐏🌀
ATM I am sewing a cardigan by means of procrastinating sewing dungarees. It is working out perfectly! :)
🤣🤣🤣 fantastic
Your sewing project looks beautiful. The colors are so pretty. Is it possible to see f RUclips has someone sewing this pattern? Maybe it would help you figure it out. You are doing fine, though.
Today, I mended a sock toe. I also finished a scrappy vanilla sock. Now, they are ready to give my youngest daughter. And sewed the top up of cable knit hat I designed for my new son-in-law. He just came to the U. S.on a 90-day fiancé visa. This will be his first winter, first snow and a warm wool hat will be much needed.
Much love to you, Becca! I'm proud of you taking time to pursue sewing again!
Thank you so much for your kind words. You have so much going on . Happy making 🐏🧶🌀
Quilting very newbie but getting there yay
Yay for learning new skills. 😁
Thrift store in British Columbia
Thank you 🙏
What an interesting pattern. I don't recall ever seeing a pre-printed pattern. It reminds me of cutting out paper doll clothes. I look forward to seeing the completed dress. You have a beautiful sewing space with all that natural lighting and gorgeous view! Here in Alberta, Canada we call them Thrift Stores. 🍁🍂 Bernadette
Thank you 🙏 . I don't think I will buy a pattern like this again 🤣 . Have a great day Becca.
I’m knitting a cotton cardigan and spinning on my new electric spinning wheel.
Oh how fantastic a new wheel 🌀
Hello Becca, just found your podcast! I’m currently knitting 🧶 on a new scrappy vest 😊
Wonderful! . Enjoy your knitting and thank you for taking the time to leave a comment 🌀🧶🐏🙏
Morning - Sunday - Early morning on a dull Isle of Wight! I’m sat here quietly with my little yorkie while hubby sleeps….. RUclips on the TV and there was your vlog. Sewing - I’m currently sewing shoppers with french seams. Using upholstery fabric that I pick up every few months from an upholsterer who would normally ‘bin’ their leftover fabric. I try and use every last bit of fabric. Right…… back to watching your video. 😊
Hi . I'm just taking a break from designing wrapping paper on the computer. I'm doing the thing I always tell people not to do . I'm working at the weekend. Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a comment 🙏. Your sewing project sounds brilliant. I definitely want to work with off cuts and second hand fabric. Have a great rest of the day.
I’m knitting a pair of socks, crocheting lace collars to give as gifts, and thinking about a hand sewing project I want to start. I’m starting to think more and more about retirement, and trying to prepare myself as to how I will organize my time. My grown children are just beginning to have children of their own. We already went through helping care for my parents through their last years just a few years ago. Much as I love spending time with the grands, I don’t really want to be full-time daycare. It is going to be a trick to find a nice balance.
Yes, finding balance can be a tricky one . Thank you for leaving a comment 🙏🧵🧶
Hi Becca, I have only just discovered you! In Canada we call them thrift stores. I am currently sewing Fall and Halloween table runners for one of my daughters. I am also knitting a lap blanket using natural prairie wool in undyed colours.
Welcome to this crafty corner of the internet you are Welcome . Thank you for the info on Thrift stores . I have been wondering that for ages. I think a lot of us fiber folk are textile folk too . 🐏🧶🧵
Are those yoke pieces actually facings for the neckline area?
Yes . I have re-pinned it and now makes sense for me. Thank you so much for taking the time to comment . 🙏🧵🧶
@@bybeccalewis Oh, I got lucky! I haven't really sewed anything other than face masks for a long time. Good to know I have retained a least a tiny bit of what my mom taught me. :) Thanks Becca. All the best, Barbara
Hi Becca, so glad your channel popped up. Been struggling in retirement a little bit. Husband and I have lost both sets of parents in last few years, but overjoyed to have 6 grandchildren, our newest granddaughter was just born on Tuesday this week. I’ve yet to meet her, as I’ve been ill with a virus, so looking forward to my first cuddle.
Anyway, I think we need some routine in our days, at the moment, unless we are on childcare duties, we just seem to nimble through the days, and I don’t feel like we achieve much.
That being said, I have recently set up my lovely big crafting table in our back extension which wasn’t really being used properly, (we’ve only been in this house 3 yrs). What a difference it’s made! I’ve been making lavender bags from our own lavender, and getting back to crochet as well. I set aside a couple of hours most days in the afternoon before dinner has to be made, and am thoroughly enjoying crafting again. It’s great doing something I enjoy, and there’s something to show for my efforts.
Looking forward to following your channel. Greetings from England ❤️🇬🇧
Congratulations on the new addition to your family. You are very welcome to this crafty corner of the internet. I am so happy that you found the video useful and thank you for taking the time to comment. I hope you are having the Wonderful weather in England that we are having in Wales. 🌀🐏🧶🧵
Op shop in Australia
Brilliant thank you. 👋
I retired and we moved and remodeled a house for two years, then I got cancer and had five surgeries for two years. Now that I am well again I do whatever the heck I want, life is short. I sew, quilt, crochet, embroider, paint, make junk journals, slow stitching, make lace, hook rugs etc. Usually from about 11 to 4 every day and then after supper I do some more for a couple hours!!
I'm so glad to hear you are well again. You are so right life is short and we must do what makes us happy. Thank you for sharing your story 🙏🧵🧶🌀🐏
Looks like you have the outer yoke front and back, and a yoke lining front and back.
You join the like fabrics at the shoulder seams, so join the 2 blue flowered ones together, and then the 2 multi colored ones together. You'll end with 2 oddly shaped circles; one to show on the outside, and one for the lining. Don't worry, you'll get there.
Yep you are totally right. Thank you 👍
I've learned to sew again at 50, almost 30 years after my last attempt. I've made all sorts of cute little things as well as four quilts! I am largely bedridden, so this was quite an accomplishment. My bedside sewing machine keeps me going!
Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful story 🙏. Rediscovering sew is making me so happy. 🧵
Sewing bags.
Wonderful 👍🧵🌸
I spent the weekend drawing and doing watercolor, now I'm back to spinning :)
Have fun!
I’m working on making Rice Bags
Fantastic have fun. 🧵
Oh those are nice! My mom loves hers especially during the cold Ohio winters.
Usa thrift store
Cool thank you 👍🌀🧶🐏
I’ve been entranced by slow hand stitching, using up scraps of fabrics from aunts and friends. I bought a new sewing machine about 5years ago to adapt curtains for the house. Since then the machine has been stashed away…we’re moving and the plan is for each of us to have our own room, for projects and solitude. So I hope to have the machine out permanently and get to grips with really using it…Totally agree with your premise to look after you in retirement.
Hi Alison. I think your plan to each have a room is very wise . We have done that although my art and craft supplies are spilling out all over the place at the moment . I am considering a she shed when we finally give up beekeeping and we have an empty space. Good luck with the move . Have you found somewhere? .
@@bybeccalewis think so… all in the hands of the chain gods now…
I agree with keeping the sewing machine in a convenient place so that if you decide on a whim to do make something it's on hand.
Sewing quilted bags these days. ❤
That sounds great 👍 thank you for sharing.
I’m knitting the mystery gnome.😊
I have just Googled that. Sounds like lots of fun. Good luck. 🐏🧶🌀
Me too 😅
Im 57 and a quilter..however im begining to sew clothes again..
