Had mine for 6 years now, haha still love it. I've surprised many cars with it. 0-100 isn't that fast, but once you're in 3rd gear power band it starts pulling.
I know these are criticised for being underpowered and they probably do feel it when you drive one now compared to a modern hot hatch, but at least it has an engine in it that you can fully trust and that if looked after, it’ll last you a hell of a long time. I don’t think you can put the same faith into modern engines, as they’re all turbo charged, downsized, and some even 3 cylinders. I’m not slating modern engines at all, I have a MK8 Fiesta ST and I love it, but I definitely think the Duratec engines are much better for longevity than any Ecoboost.

@@absturzmann If 1st and 2nd were any shorter it would be shit cos it can actually hit 60mph in 2nd. If they were short they wouldnt be able to... plus its more economical.

Yes, it comes down to the st170 gear ratios which are not the best... 1st and 2nd gears are super long, 3rd a bit long but okay-isch, 4th almost useless (gear ratio is very close to 3rd gear), 5th and 6th are ok. I guess they made such a long 2nd gear to improve the 0-100 km/h time. On the st170 2nd gear reaches 110isch on the speedo, so 100km/h in real life. I also own a MK1 focus 2.0 130hp (same zetec-e engine block, but without vvt / IMRC) with the MTX75 5-gear manual and - even if it realy would benefit from a 6th gear - it's gearing ratios are (imo) perfect. You have to put it in 3rd gear to reach 100km/h and therefore loose some time on paper, but the 0-80isch km/h time feel the same on both and I would even argue that the standard 2.0 engine with 130hp with it's 5 speed gearbox would be faster on most tracks than the st170 with it's 6 speed gearbox... Nevertheless I still have much fun with the st170 and it's suboptimal gearing gives a good reason/justification to rev the tits out of the engine when my wife ever wonders why i rev it so high and the car is so loud 😊 I don't know if it has been done or if it is doable, but it would be interesting pair a st170 engine with a 5 speed MTX75 gearbox of the standard 2.0. Who knows, maybe I'll try some day 😅
It did well! Although they’ll do this kind of thing they’re not really geared for it. Best on a twisty B road using all the gears & all the rev range. Loads of fun!
Seems a bit slow up for 170hp. i have often seen 210 speedo (on the brink of 200 gps) with a 1.8 115hp engine back in the days, and pulling third until redline doesnt seem so much faster here, either.
