I immediately detected a factor of distorsion in B that I didn't quite like. I wasn't sure and thought I was maybe confusing some of the guitar frequencies with the voice, but every time you switched, I could hear it. Not super obvious, but I could hear it. EQ wise, I didn't notice any clear differences. I guess something in the whole tube section of the Neumann is working just better. In the other one, that factor of distorsion I'm talking about, kind of takes away the silkiness the Neumann has. I would definitely try swapping tubes between them, just to see how much of that is making a difference.
A Gefell m92.1 can be a serious contender. Is not a U47 clone but it has the M7 capsule, made in Germany, similar with the original one used in the U47. For those who dont know this brand, it has same roots with Neumann. The microphone has a tube based circuit. The way it sounds, for me is sublime.
OK, I listened to the raw files: The GA has more top end, which can vary from capsule to capsule on a 47. However, the GA is absolutely missing the lower midrange bloom, which is the hallmark of a 47. Klaus calls it "midrange authority." Now, I'm sure you can make great recordings with the GA, but it doesn't do that thing the 47 is uniquely capable of doing. I made my favorite recording ever on a BLUE47! But, after a couple decades of listening to dozens of possible circuits, it that characteristic appears to be something that is reliant on the combination of the VF14 tube and BV8 transformer. Everything else is close, but no cigar.
Cool! I know you're a great engineer so thanks for listening! Sure there are differences. The presence of the vintage Neumanns is what I like the most. How it make things so upfront without taking over. I really like the outcome of my Landslide cover made with the GA. It's definitely a great mic. Vintage always seem to have some magic to it though. Maybe it's the aging components more then anything. Cheers!
@@Christian_svedin The aging components will only increase noise floor, generally, and most of the best sounding 47s have their passive components replaced. I have three 47s, which I maintain myself, and I've worked on and rebuilt a bunch more. The biggest difference from mic to mic is always the capsule. The tubes are very consistent in frequency response. Transformers don't change sound with age. You can extend the frequency range up and down by changing some values of either the grid resistor or transformer coupling capacitor, which moves the bass frequency resonance value. But those paper and tar Bosch output caps were used in V2 rockets, and are not changing sound with age. People mistakingly think they are electrolytic, which actually would dry up and change the sound. The ceramic capsule bias capacitor might get noisy or leaky, but it's just a shunt and no audio passes through it, so it's not going to change frequency response, but changing the older ones out to polystyrene actually make the sound even better, so aging is really not a factor. The only time aging is a factor is when you have an original M7, which will dry out, lose bass response, and have exaggerated high end as it stiffens.
A. sounds sweet. A special presence. This is a edit now after I got the answer wow. I picked the Neumann. No wonder it’s used on vocals like a champ. I have a studio but not the money to afford a mic like this. By the way beautiful vocal as well. Thanks for the video.
Picked up the U47, even thought I was hoping I wouldn't. The sibilance was harsher and you can tell it is just a bit more smooth on the real 47. It's very, very close though. Seems like a great mic.
It's really hard to even compare two vintage mics against each other, even the vintage nice will sound different. That being said, These two mics are close, GA has definitely captured the spirit of the U47. It's definitely on my short list for next mic purchase, very nice sounding mic.
My experience is that the whole rumour that every vintage mic will sound different is drastically exaggerated. I recently compared 3 vintage u47 and all sounded very close and very good all within Neumanns +-2db range. Thanks for watching and yeah the GAP is super nice. I also did a video on the upcoming M7 model 👍
To me, it seemed like the U47 was catching some of those high notes better, in the high mids, making them sound more epic than the other mic. Not neutral; but something many find desirable.
Even on my iPhone XS I could pick out A as being the real 47. The sibilance gave it away to me. I think most wouldn’t be able to reliably pick out the difference between the two esp in a dense mix. Great vid thanks

@@Christian_svedin Christian, i don’t believe that, you are highly creative, i can hear that in your own renditions/adaptions of cover songs and your feel/improving sense as well as your vocal variations, im going to say your probablly equally a genius songwriter,.. if you havent devoted time to this, then start immediatly, just start with simple ideas/chord combos, write a vocal melody to your riff or chord pattern, even if it sucks, just finish a complete song each month. Don’t worry about the lyrics, just create the vocal melody, sing whatever stupid words come to mind whose syllables match the rhythmic cadence of the vocal melody. Concentrate on the structure of the verse, pre chorus, chorus and an instrumental B section, an intro and a outro. Record it, file it. Complete the song minus the lyrics. Even if it sucks. Write another one next month, and so on, eventually the gems will be revealed. It takes practice like any other craft. You definitely have the improv music in you i know this for sure, its obvious. I bet anything you can eventually write hit chart topping songs. Now lets do this, you got this, don’t waste it.
@@philmartin7474 Thanks for the encouragement! I think it has allot to do with artist identy as well. You know what kind of music "do i want to do"? That's the hardest thing. There's a huge difference. I preferred A right from the start, I knew it was the Neuman U87. A sounds tighter and clearer, B sounds a bit mushy and it lacks the definition of A. If you really listen, the difference is night and day.
Nice test. Thanks. The Neumann sounds better. I was able to pick it out as it was more complex in its response. That's the usual difference in these tests and the Neumanns tend to have more bass and compression. Overall, the Neumann's tend to sound more alive, complex, 3 dimensional. The GA47 sounded kind of dull and simple by comparison (and that is the case with every clone I've heard including the FLEA 47) but its still very, very nice in general. The GA47 is very nice but its not a vintage Neumann.

I've written a couple of songs that I'm happy with that I think objectively is decent. But some are pop, some are metal haha. I'd love to find an identity and have a red thread in my writing. But I think i'd want to do something true, whatever that means. And I really don't know if I have anything to say, musically wise. But sure enough song writing is just like learning an instrument. Keep on hammering and you'll get there. Thanks once again :)
There's a huge difference. I preferred A right from the start, I knew it was the Neuman U87. A sounds tighter and clearer, B sounds a bit mushy and it lacks the definition of A. If you really listen, the difference is night and day.
I don't really hear any difference in the mix. Nice job GA.
Nice test.
Why would you use ANY EQ when doing a AB mic comparison, let alone 2 DIFFERENT EQ curves?!?! Fail... Mic B has too much high frequency hype. Definitely not the U47, unless it's been messed with
I always share the raw files so if you like you can download those! Thanks
Prefiero el stam SA 47
"A" seems a bit louder, than "B". So better test by yourself with the same LUFS оn both tracks.
its clearly u47 is more magic tgere
Sorry to be the negative guy for a second but.... ccooouuullldddd yyyooouuuuuu taaaaaakkkkkkkeeeee annnyyyyyyy llllooonnnngggeeeerrrr tttoooooooooo saaaaayyyyyyyyy everyyyyyyyyyyyyyy litttllllleeeeeeee wwwoooooorrrrrrddddddd? hahaha thank you this was super helpful!
You speak for something like 3 minutes before you start the "shootout." So WHY don't you use one or both of the mics for your VO? It is difficult to get a true read with a mixed track. Let us hear the CLEAN vocal tracks, and a CLEAN narration read or something.
They are NOT practicaly the same. There is a difference and Neumann is Neumann!
Golden age is shit
