  • Keys Kayak Fishing Under The Bridges. Since I was out doing some cast net videos, I of course had to try and catch some fish. This was over at Park Channel where I do a lot of bridge fishing. You can drag your kayak down on the West side the easiest.

    So many Mangroves under the bridges. When I use to fish them we use to get a good amount of big muttons too. Good video man!

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 лет назад

      I occasionally get some smaller ones. These bridges are surrounded by flats so we don't get the real big fish hanging out like the mid and upper Keys. I just hate that drive up there. These are good eaters though.

    I've used one of those weighted nets. They are hard enough to use from shore. You are the MAN for being able to use one out of a kayak.

      Good deal Christian. I think that the more you provide a good example, it makes it seem like an acceptable thing to do. Kind of backwards in that we should be focusing on people not littering, but I think it is more effective to show people that it is okay to pick up after others and protecting our passion.

    Hey man... if I were you I'd keep my yak bottom away from those sharp rocks or you'll end up with deep scratches and eventually crevices. I saw you dragging it down there and thought "no way I can afford doing it to mine"... my yak is no fancy or expensive, but I try to keep it as safe as possible... even more because I fish alone all the time... and if because of a crevice it begins to make water far from shore, it can be dangerous... and/or at least loose some gear. Anyway, nice fish!! Thank you... this is the most frequent type of fishing that I do... here in Miami there aren't so many good mangrove fishing spots or at least I don't know them yet... so it's easier to go under the bridges.

      I know right. I just can't justify buying a new car because it would just get abused and eaten up by corrosion. The only time I drive it is when I have a meeting in Miami or when I am going kayak fishing. This one is a special commuter model from California. No A/C, no power steering, no power windows, no power door locks, LOL. It has one fan belt. I am still getting 40 mpg without the kayak on top.

    Steve, what are your thoughts regarding mono, fluoro, and braided line for this style of fishing and fishing in general? Do you use one style for everything or specific line for specific techniques? Thanks

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 лет назад +1

      For general fishing I use braid with a mono leader. On the flats in clear water I use light fluorocarbon leader. For Mangroves with live bait like I use, plain mono is fine as they are focused on the bait. Depends on the fish size and location (structure, sharks, etc.)

    I've been meaning to ask you something for awhile now but I always forget. Almost every time I fish the mangroves in the Keys for snapper I've seen very big fish that look just like mangrove snapper but are much much bigger than all the rest of them. I will typically see only 1 or 2 of them and usually after I've been fishing a spot for a bit. Do you know what I mean? Are they just really big mangroves, some other snapper, or am I just crazy?

    • @RikkiTikkiTavi290
      @RikkiTikkiTavi290 7 лет назад

      I've seen them all through my life up till now on almost every trip but have never caught or hooked one I don't think. One of those fish I've seen that keeps me up at night.

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 лет назад

      You can get Jewfish +100 pounds in any deep water cuts along the mangroves.

    • @RikkiTikkiTavi290
      @RikkiTikkiTavi290 7 лет назад

      That is what I thought the first time I saw them years ago, but in trips since I've gotten a few really good looks at them and I'm sure they are snapper. The last one I saw was a few months ago, and it was swimming on top of some brush in the water tight to the mangroves right in front of me about a foot from the surface. Acted exactly like a snapper except it was at least twice as big as any mangrove I've seen in the roots. Same gray color with dark edged fins and deep body. Must just be huge mangroves I guess, but if it was its the mother of all mangroves. I would estimate 10lbs or greater.

      Just basic Yakima round tube racks. I forgot the length of the bars, but they are the longer ones. I also have the extension bar which allows the rack to sit farther back without a second window bar because of the single door hatchback.

      Especially our bridges down here where there is basically only flats all around. They provide a bit of depth as well as structure.

      My car is much better than a truck. Lock all my stuff inside, yak not hanging out the back, the heighth of my car is not much higher than a full size truck. 40 mpg...
