  • This week's episode is about RopeWork & Knot Tying. In this introductory video I walk you through the, 'Lightning' Method' of casting a Bowline which is great for posts and large rings. This can be a life saver in certain circumstances and is your #1 Chance to be a crew hero!
This is the introductory teaser for a much longer (35 min) video that covers all aspects of Bowlines that you can watch over on Patreon for the price of a beer!
Video is available from 1400 Hours AST on Patreon
    www.patreon.co...
In it you'll find multiple tying variations for the bowline and an explanation of when to use them. There are also methods of creating stable bowlines that will not shake out in dynamic situations & discussion about the breaking strength of bowlines made in modern kernmantel and Class 1 ropes as opposed to traditional 3-strand rope, Finally, I chat through the history and applications for the bowline in modern sailing.
If you want to stretch your seamanship knowledge - there is only one question: Is it worth a beer to you?

If you keep the pre knot loose (can fit your pinky finger in it) then it is a lot easier to get the bowline when you pull the rope at the end. You almost don't even have to throw the bitter end back.
Thank for the video! Super useful way to tie a bowline.

A modest recommendation: 4k at 24fps looks a lot better than 1080p at 50 or 60fps. Not everyone has the computing power for those high resolution/frame-rate combinations, nor do those frame rates substantially contribute to the visual comprehension of really fast movements.

Oh thats really good advice thank you! I have started using a more advanced program to edit the videos as I am really trying to create a good product here but my knowledge of audio visual production is limited. I will make the change on the next upload thank you!

@@CSMtheMariner The most important thing is the value of the content, you've got no problem providing plenty of that!

Hi CSM, subbed when you were sailing hellcat across the pond!, this is great video, I'll defiantly add that one to my kit bag! I spent too many hours reading Ashley's ......I think my dad gave it away...... cheers Warren.
So been practicing ...it's interesting you make up the tom-thumb knot in the standing part in your right hand then you have to transfer it to the left hand .........A little different from the fast climbing type fast tie I use all the time .....practice! 👍👍
More so I'm a little ambidextrous ......so I made the tom.thumb in my right hand , And then hold it as the standing part in my right hand.......ready to go.......now throw the loop 'clockwise' around the post and put thru the loop in the Tom Thumb and pull the standing part to close to knot. Or is that just the left hand version? But I like making up the tom-thumb and keeping it in my right hand with the standing part and not passing it to my left 😃

This is Great! Really happy to hear you are engineering a version that works for you! The key thing for this casting method is: where is the standing part? Is it safely hooked over the crook of your elbow so you don't lose it during the reach around the post? If so it's going to work just fine! Enjoy !

You should have tough that quick knot to a mutual friend of ours at the 2020 RORC600 race, that way he would not have gone trough 10 unsuccessful attends to tie up the boat to the dock, with all the crew looking at hi and making 'little' sarcastic remarks....Can't wait for the MTL yatchclub to open so i can get all those free beers thanks tho that lightning fast bowline knot!!
