- We block the canal whilst refilling our narrowboat with fuel (diesel and gas)! We then continue our narrowboat journey along the South Stratford Canal and enjoy traversing the longest Aqueduct in England. We also share with you how much diesel we have used for propulsion.

The swimming lessons on the aqueduct would have been in the 1950’s. The restoration and reopening of the canal was done in the early 60’s, partially assisted by prisoners from local gaols. The IWA National Rally in 1964 was at Stratford (so boats either came down the Stratford or up the Avon). The Queen Mother attended and reopened the canal, and gave a speech from the theatre that’s just downstream of the basin at Stratford. I was there - and very young. Our boat had problems getting under the final bridge into the basin. The plaque for attending the rally was made by prisoners at the gaols.
Couldn’t agree with Kath more. It’s the slow pace of life that I love. We started in 2015 because we had been through a lot in 2014, our mum and dad passing away within 6 months of each other was the final straw. I was watching a program one late night. The program was nothing special but I just couldn’t stop watching. It was a camera on the front of a narrow boat going along the K and A. A few days later I had booked my sister, my brother in law, my son and my husband for a short break on the K and A. We really want a boat but just haven’t found the right one yet. It was the slow life that I fell in love with.
Hope you find your ideal boat soon.
You should do more of these 20+ minute videos - very enjoyable - so are the shorter ones, but they end too soon...
So nice of you to say
Just remember, the pontcysyllte aqueduct WAS built in Wales, (Well, they had to put it somewhere!🙃) BUT, it was built by a Scottish and an English engineer!!!🤣 But it is a very fine piece of engineering all ways round!!
Those bridges are very tight, especially that one which hit you! If you remember, I saw you at Stratford Basin lock, we never did go up the Stratford canal, so many problems, we decided not to. Now I'm waiting to see if I make it into the vlog, after all my hard work with the lock?!
Great stuff, as always, hope you enjoyed the Avon?
I’ve walked the entire length of the Stratford and back over the last few weeks, I passed ‘Lazy Days’ moored at Wilmcote, sorry I didn’t get to say Hi, loving the vlogs !
Well saying 'hi' now is good enough. hi.
What a wonderful mix of fact, history, animals, the ins and outs of the journey, and not least of all, your very selves, a delight. guy
Thanks so much
thankyou all your vlogs are incredably helpful for a newbie like me.
Fellow painter here in the US..been loving your trips thru the canals. Love the bits showing how you create art on the houseboat. Wish i had done more of the following my bliss when i was young enough to do it. Good on you. Safe canaling.XOX
I always love the technical data you collect and share, Kath! Thanks so much to you both for sharing the info.
Glad you liked it. Kath’s great at record keeping.
In regards to tea making; I use a 2l stainless steel vacuum flask at work. Brew a pot and fill it in the morning and it's still hot at the end of the day. Fuel and time efficient.
That was a lovely vlog thank you. Beautiful scenery, well done for going through the narrow bridges, and the aquaduct was awesome. And Boots loved watching Alice and Munchy at the end. xx
Lovely day and awesome scenery. Thanks for uploading.
I'm loving my Sunday mornings even more these days guys. Lovely lovely vlog - and a perfect way to start a day. Gorgeous canal... Thank yoooou.
Yay! Thank you!
Thanks for your video. Especially about the longest aquaduct. It's very nice to see your video.
Hi gals.
Nice to see how skillful you manage your voyage.
We are a family of 6 and we have sailed the canals 3 times- Llangollan and Grand Union.
We have all just loved this.
Such a marvellous way to get familiar with the lovely British countryside.
The finest experience I know of.
Take care!
The narrow boat experience is not a race of competition . It’s a adventure of enjoyment not to be hurried. Loved your accent describing the locks and bridges.
Here in America we use both poppers to keep boats from rubbing on the dock but you never see both bumpers on the narrow boats
Could you imagine blocking a road getting fuel, you would be crucified . That’s what we like about boating a slow pace and most boaters are relaxed and friendly. Enjoy the videos thanks
Lovely ladies. Really enjoyed this upload. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe, stay well, and enjoy your travels x
Glad you were happy with the service!
It's these type of vlogs that I find so helpful... the nitty gritty ones... thanks for another wonderful episode!
Just got into watching the channel over the last month, it’s a great series. I picked you up from Cruising the Cut. I do accept that the Bradley lock is named as such but it is also know as the “Odd Lock” so you are both right! Best wishes to you both from Nigel of Stratford.
I see only the sailing for every episodes. But I want to know and see all the functions and spending in the natural life for every person in the day and night in this boat life. Thanx.
Check out lockdown series
Just love narrow boats!. Hopefully will be there next spring enjoying the Canals too!.
There is no way I will ever narrow boat, but yall got my subscription because you two are soo fun to follow in your adventures.. hi from Montana USA
Delightful vlog. Thank you
I really enjoy your vlogs. Your relaxed approach to traveling the canals is pleasing to the heart and soul. And your eyes for beauty, ( nature, etc.), shows not only your artistic minds, but your closeness to the natural, untouched world. Your slowed down way of life give you and then us the viewers time to see a world that otherwise could very well simply pass us by. I must added before I say good bye, that I looked seeing you cross the aquaduck and the historic stories behind it. Thank you for being so groovy, and taking us along for your adventures.
what a lovely comment, thank you, so glad you are enjoying watching.
Wonderful as always ladies ... fab to see you both smiling and the cats so obviously happy and healthy. x
Thanks
Lovely views and an aquaduck to boot, thanks Kat and Annamarie....love you both. Yes, Kat, all good things come from Whales. Thanks for the figures Kat, those are eye opening numbers. Those cats look happy and wonderful.... I like a good sand rock bath as well.
Glad you enjoyed it
What a nice way to spend Sunday morning cruising on lazy days with you both thankyou ladies and take care
Glad you enjoyed it
Every time I watch your videos it’s like a breath of fresh air just pst through the day. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you
Good afternoon girls! And where would my Sunday be without your beautiful smiles?
As to gas, as a caravanner, I always keep 2 bottles, one in use, and the other for when the first ran out! :-)
Yes, same.
Great vlog. Thank you.
Thanks from Wales good vid 👍👍🏴
Slow and steady wins the race. Lovely vlog ladies - those aqueducts are breathtaking to go across. A cuppa seems a good idea afterwards - especially in your lovely mugs! Stay safe and keep up the good work!
The aqueducts were spectacular and the tea was lovely.
If I may suggest a gas/fuel saving measure those who like it slow (going) surely appreciate?
The device is called the Wonderoven. It is basically a specially shaped set of polystyreen or wool filled bags which lets you place a hot pot inside to keep it hot for hours on end. You can make very nice stews and with a little bit of practice even bread is possible.
The device is meant to be made by anyone who has moderate sewing skills.
RUclips has a video on it in which description the patterns can be downloaded free of charge.
I use two of them in my kitchen and a smaller (scalled down) version in my camper van and let me tell you they are great. They let you cook with a fraction of the gas/fuel consumption especially when stewing or trying to tenderise cheaper cuts of meat. The basic principle is heat retention...
If you like to test a dish out before commiting to cut up an old bedsheet or duvée cover, you can use some blankets or bedding to put the pot in. Simply bring the dish in the pot to a rolling boil and place the pot (on a cotton towel) in bed and cover well with several folds of the bedding or blankets...
The heat retained will cook the dish for hours on end and a dish started just after lunch is ready at dinner time...brilliant, try it...
BTW: there is another saving tips in there as well: you don't need the more deer cuts to have tender meats in the dish you can easily go for the cheaper ones (more sinuous cuts) and create very tasty and tender meat dishes by stewing in the wonderoven without any fuel consumption.
Any questions please state an email address I can use so I can send you an email which you can reply to ask away...
The name sounds Dutch to me ;-)
Love the aqueduct, it's always an unusual view. We don't have them here that make's it special. Just got to the cat section they're loving it. We have 5 plus we look after the towns forgotten cats, we feed and water them and more importantly get them fixed and back home as soon as possible.
Very nice vid ladies. Your artwork on door is awesome too. After minus-45 it will be great to get back out into the wilds too. 🇨🇦 71+ Yorkshire expat one can only paint so many wine glasses 🐻
Lazy Days welcome to the very select greater order of boats named Lazy Days, mine was built in 1930 at Castleford, Yorkshire on the Aire and Calder canal. She was a family cruiser built of ash planks on oak beams, a teak deck and mahogany wheel house, two berths forward, galley and head. Sofa that pulled out to sleep two and the carriage dining are would also break down to make a large single bed. Originally power by twin Penta engines. She was great to handle and I covered many miles in the 15 years I owned her.
In 1940 she was taken into the navy and spent 3 days at Dunkirk taking troops off the beaches to larger craft off shore, return to England with bullet holes at the water line, yet full of fleeing troops. She continued her war effort on mine patrol of the Thames Estuary. After that she went back to being a family boat, moored to a small piece of land on the River Thames, the eldest son of that family became a captain in the Royal Navy.
So in 1995 I bough this little 30ft boat and lived aboard while I worked at Heathrow Airport, just 7 miles from my mooring. Each 5 years I took her back to Dunkirk as a member of the Association of Dunkirk Little Ships, Return to Dunkirk where we were introduced to The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles and Prince Michael of Kent who is the associations Honorary Admiral.
During the 15 years I owned her she has traveled up the East coast from the Medway to Castleford. Attended classic boat rally's on the Thames, in Oostende, Antwerp and Gouda. I kept the boat in the Netherlands for three years and toured the rivers, canals and lakes of that wonderful boating country, also visiting Belgium and French canals. But it was the people of Holland that won my heart.
If you ever get the chance to nip across the English channel with your Lazy Days I'm sure you will have a wonderful time too. I will pop in on your channel from time to time and would just like to wish you both safe sailing and great adventures.
Great show guy's Keep it up! Thanks
At about 7 mins you go under that very narrow bridge and just as you pop through a duck scoots on through in the opposite direction. I love the thought of him just waiting at the side as you come through, patiently waiting his turn.
Thank you.
Have you ladies ever thought of making your own rope fenders? I know you probably have more than enough to do already, but it's such an interesting old craft and they look wonderful. Another very interesting video--thank you.
I love your videos. So very peaceful. Keep up the good work
Thanks for the cruise ladies
❤️❤️ love the video was very useful indeed. Bless you both.
I really enjoyed your lovely vlog. And what a great English summer day!
Nice 👍🏻 informative video. Thanks
A nice video. I love the slow pace. Very glad you don’t use the fast motion. I love the scenery and fast motion hurts my eyes while trying to see the scenery. I would love the aqueducts and the tunnels. I woke up at 4:00 AM and here’s I nice video. Thanks for all the videos.
Thanks. We like to show the little details that you get to see from our perspective and thats' why we don't really use fast forward (time lapse). We also don't put a camera on the bow as it does create an extra layer of editing.
14:50 I invested in a 4 liter water boiler with a carafe function. So much tea! Hooray!
Just watched this with my second cup of coffee this morning😁. Greeting from a Brit living the good life in central Europe🌻🌞💚
Wait.. a Brit drinking coffee? No tea? Most peculiar.
But joking aside, welcome to central Europe.
Now where did I put my tea filters....
Love your fuel stick, what a pretty day. I enjoyed this vlog immensely.
Thank you! 😊
Oh I love to listen to the birds!
Nice to sail along with you two 👍
Love from Denmark ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Those bridges are very narrow but having watched you fora while I know both of you are very good helms people and even the best have the occasional kiss of the bank.Good to see the cats again, they do enjoy a nice roll in the dirt .A great scenic vlog thanks guys.
Thank you for the vote of confidence.
Always fun thank you girls... :)
What a pretty stretch of canal. Ah the gravel rub! This was a lovely way to start my day. My mental health.
It really is x
What a wonderful Sunday wake up to cruise the English canals with you. I laughed when I saw I was drinking from the same mug while watching you bring tea to Kath.
I pour a little stream of very hot water down the side of a gas bottle for 15 or 20 seconds to get a more accurate reading, this works especially well in winter. The steel becomes quite warm but is cool exactly where the liquid level is. The main advantage of this method is the sharper temperature differential between hot and cold. I am glad to see you are not so concerned about Alice and Munchie running around loose and snoozing on top of the roof. Lovely video.
Yay, I do love it when we are all drinking from the same cup- virtually1
Afternoon ladies.nice and interesting video this afternoon ,I had a Narrowboat holiday on the Stratford cannel 25/30 years ago loved every moment about it I guess you are on the same cannel it looks like the on with the aqueduct going over the train tracks and the rd as well ,take care keep safe,John
Lovely memories then.
It might be a little bit old-ladyish, but if you put your kettle on a cork mat and stick a tea cosy over it it will retain heat for some time and reboil faster. It's also probably safer than trying to decant very hot water to and from a flask on a moving boat! You could even use the slow cooker bag you demonstrated months ago, although it might be a bit bulky and inconvenient for daily use?
Not old lady at all- just lady like. Great tip thanks.
I did not know that about the shake and feel method for gas tanks thanks ever so
Dip stick measurement was standard for most of our tractors. Ours had unreliable electronic gauges (1960s new tech was so lovely...) so that was how we had to check. Some of the older tractors had mechanical ones with the dial on the tank. I have a lot of experience with motorcycles that don't have a gauge. Older ones had a dual-intake petcock where one was higher in the tank. When the engine stalled you switched to the "reserve" position and knew you only had X amount left.
What a Smashing 'Virtual Cruise' for a Sunday morning .... Thanks Gal's :-)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your big window in the galley.
Watching from Indiana in America. Love your work! Also you two ladies are a super cute couple. I’ve subscribed because I love all things narrow boat and I’m looking forward to more.
I like the flask tip for the kettle :)
Thanks guys, good point about keeping the engine going in the locks, being a small boat I always tie up to the lock ladder. Oh for a diesel engine it costs me around a £1.00 per mile using petrol, my journey from Shardlow to the Ashby cost about £50.00. Really like the look of the area you are in. Take care. Alan x
Nice cruise again ladies thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
I'd be a little nervous too if I was going over a aqueduct.🥺 Nice to see both of you in such high spirits.🙂
Wonderful nearly like this journey as much as the Llangollen one which will always be my favourite that’s just the Welsh in me but you have cheered my day up
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi to both of you, hope you are both keeping well. Looked up Bearley Lock and according to the Canal and River Trust it's Odd Lock so they are one in the same, so you are both right as far as I can tell. Stay safe and healthy and enjoy the good weather.
Thanks
you two make your videos awesome! tks!
Glad you like them!
There was a further train track under the Edstone Aqueduct which went to Alcester which became disused in the 1960s. This was where the water was used to top up steam locos
Thank you both for your cheery vlog....it is raining here in Melbourne Australia and cold only about 12oc .....your vlog cheered up the end of the weekend for me....thanks again...keep up the great work.
Our pleasure!
Sounds just like normal British summer weather.
Regards from Redruth
Arnold
Very enjoyable ,as always.
Thanks so much
That was interesting & enjoyable vlog....stay safe.....thanks for sharing
Thank you! Will do!
Morning ladies love seeing the aqueduct must take a look one day.Look forward to your next vblog 🌞🌞🌞
Please do!
Your cats are so good! xx
Thanks
Lovely vid ladies, always most enjoyable. Stay well. Xxx
Glad you liked it thanks for watching.
Nice informative vlog on how you live your lives. Stay well.
John, Ontario, Canada.
Thanks hope you are well
I'm prity sure we didn't notice any bumping of a bridge. Great to see you out and about after such a long lockdown.
too kind, there was a definite bump. But I said to Kath that some people will have looked away to have a sip of tea at that moment. lol
Oh, this is a lovely surprise.
Thanks!
I remember riding in an old Victorian steam launch. It had been found at the bottom of lake Windermere and restored. It had a steam kettle on the engine that could boil a gallon of water in 10 seconds-now that's a fast cup of tea!
Wow. So interesting
Hi girls, your videos are lovely. I need to sell my home and do the same. I'm 59 but very young haha, in my head anyway, my daughter wants me to take the plunge not literally, but knowing me !! A lot to consider...I love the community spirit that comes with the lifestyle.
An idyllic day - Munchie said it all with that luxuriating on the gravel! Still dreaming of "one day"
He does love a roll in gravel.
Excellent as normal, keep it up girls....xx
Thank you so much!!
I’m watching this very early in the morning and have become very thirsty for my first cup of coffee this morning. I wonder why? Lol
You both seem so much happier since you got Lazy Days - it really does seem like the right boat for you, lockdown and all
Very true.
You lovely ladies should try to make solar tea. You use a 4 liter glass or clear plastic. It must be optically clear. Fill with water add your tea bags and let it sit in the sun for about 30 minutes. Pour sweeten to taste and drink. You will save a lot of energy making solar tea.
Maybe see you around Stratford, I live on my narrow boat in the marina just next to the basin.
I enjoyed looking out the galley window while underway. It's a different prospective. How about more of it?
Glad you liked that view.
Grew video again - nice to see you in the town on the bridge as you make your way to Stratford (couple from Carlisle) 👍
Good to see you also.
Hello guys, I love Kath's Red Sox Baseball tee shirt, they start playing on the 24th of July, Kath FYI
I loved your video. AND YOU Wore a Mask well done 👏👏👏👏👏👏 Van travellers RARELY do. So well done stay safe & enjoy..
It's a wonder winding the locks, dont hurt ur back. It's weird going on an aqueduct 👍
Mines black coffee, no sugar, please & thankyou.
ONLY time I've been on a boat was 50 years ago, we went on the Norfolk broads.
Dont ur cats ever get lost ?
Talking about the fuel and coal boats brings to mind that given our current weather, "Sunday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 3pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 91. (32.7C) Heat index values as high as 101." (38.3C), I'd be looking for a _cold_ boat to flag down!
With a Narrowboat, good planning is always important.
Indeed the aqueduct is impressive, but I also find it scary.
It is special that the cats stay with you.
It was both impressive and scary- I agree.
@@TheNarrowboatExperience You are nice people.
Thanks for the great viewing. I'm narrowboating vacariously, living in Australia. My wife, sadly died last November, and I have hired boats over the last 6 years as part of our uk and French holidays. No doubt that the Pontcysyllte aqueduct, as well as Wales generally, is stunning. We've been over it a few times, in our week hire boats and on a day boat. Did the Foxton locks in July last year and the Stourport ring, with another couple, the year before. Just love the lifestyle, but it is on hold at the moment. What is the canal app you showed in this vlog? Keep up the fantastic vlogs and thank you.
Sorry to hear about your wife. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for the tip on checking how much gas is in the bottle.
Happy to help!
What an excellent idea Annamarie. Convert some of your favourite paintings to painting by numbers so us mere mortals can have a go!
I did think about it.
A very interesting vlog as usual. You’ve got the same doormat as us although ours is in the bow.
Well ladies, another great video just having my breakfast watching you a little bit of ham and eggs toast and a brew of coffee, yum yum, on saving gas why don't you make one large flask of tea for the day. Ta,ta, for know.
Sounds great!
I was watching you Kath, filling up with diesel and lugging those monster LPG bottles, then you wandered of to pay, but the boat started to move, as if you'd forgotten to pull the handbrake on. I realized how stupid I was and typed this. Take care.
