This is awesome. Thanks so much for your support, Steve!
Thanks PreSonus, see you all in a few weeks!
Have read posts on line of these dropping sound intermittently. One commenter said the the cause was overheating and blowing air directly with a fan was the only solution.
I really want this system to be dependable.
Great vids and maybe too much to answer here but I hear a lot of people say they don’t want to run their preamps near full but never really “the why.”
I mean, given clean pres, if you needed to run a pre at 95% to push an SM7B for example, what would be the downside? Or better yet, why do you not like to run a preamp too hot if you needed and it was a quality pre?
Thanks!
Ray Ortega in live you always run the risk of feedback if you run a pre too hot, no amount geq can take that out. Because you are effectively enlarging the polar pattern of “x” mic.
@@junejhunkie Good point, I don't do a lot of live, however if they mic requires that much gain (RE20, SM7B, etc) then your polar pattern is equal to a mic that only needs less. So in those cases, I wonder what is different about a pre near the top as opposed to the middle. Only difference I think I've noticed is the very small amount of room you have to make adjustments, small adjustments make bigger differences near the top end...I think;)
Ray Ortega it depends on the mic pre you’re using. I find on most live boards there is a thin line you have to thread when you want more gain on those hi impedance mics(ive owned those mics in past and familiar with what you are facing). You are going to end up with a lot of experiments with which mic pre for the job. Audients for the mid price and some millenia for the hi end stuff. Good luck!
@@junejhunkie what.
Loop gain is loop gain... whether you're getting it from your pre, your dsp, or your amps (granted exception to the remote possibility that a live sound console will have excessively colored pres), but none of it will change your pickup pattern...
Hey Ray, thanks for the message. Given a clean pre-amp (like a super clean pre-amp) it really wouldn't matter. Gain applied is best done as soon as possible after the input, so I wouldn't have a problem with a low output mic going through something like a millennia pre, being wound all the way up to get the level needed for a specific task.
In most situations though, it's all about signal to noise ratio. If you need to open a pre all the way up on a budget console to get a fairly standard mic up to level, there's a better than good chance that you're amplifying a whole lot of noise along with your signal by the time you get where you want to be.
There is a great paper from Rane that talks at length about gain structure in live sound and how important your approach can be to the results you achieve. www.rane.com/note135.html
Thanks for watching!
I have a 16.8 stage box that is used live. Several of the Amphenol XLR latches have falling out during use. Do you happen to have the actual Amphenol female part number? Thanks for the great video!
Hmm.. have you reached out to PreSonus yet with this question? They probably have the part number on hand. Without a stagebox or schematic on hand to compare, it would be a bit of a guess, but you might be able to narrow it down on the mouser website by looking at yours - www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Amphenol-Audio/AC3FAV-AU-PRE?qs=4QugYJNEYLekyy65HviOkA%3D%3D&mgh=1
@@DcSoundOp - I did reach out to Presonus Support and was told "We don't give out part numbers. Please send in for repair" . I ordered Amphenol ACJC10 series with latch from DigiKey and will compare. This connector has the Dual XLR-TRS support like the stage box. I'll update the comment when the parts arrive in the near future. Thanks for the reply.
If I had limited rack space...could I use a StudioLive 16r as a mixer and this NSB 16.8 as a stage box. Is this a good cost-effective workflow?
Yes, absolutely that is certainly an option with the 16R & NSB stageboxes. You just have to remember the total number of channels the mixer can handle at once is 18, so you wouldn't be able to use all of the inputs at once if you add that many more.
@@DcSoundOp I am trying to use OBS or VMIX live streaming events so it seems like the 16r can give me a stereo master mix out of the USB. Am I assuming correctly?
Very Informative video on this mixing system. I can't wait to watch the upcoming videos on the mixing console itself!
Thanks Arun, more videos are coming soon, I promise!
@@DcSoundOp awesome! Thank you!
Great video! Fantastic content, and SO well produced... thanks! .
Is it possible to use NSB as sound interface without studio live mixer?
Can I connect this direct to my Mac Book M1 with a standard usb C Ethernet dongle
You could do that and access the outputs via avb natively, but you won’t have any way to control the preamps on the input side as far as I know.
wha? you can’t control gain and phantom without a StudioLive mixer? There’s no software control?
What about just as line level then?
@DcSoundOp
Excellent overview.... given the cost of a 16r, and it’s added capability, I might just buy one of those instead.....
The 16R is a really cool little mixer, did you see the videos I did a while back on that one? I really enjoyed it for how small it was. Thanks for the message! ruclips.net/video/8v7TLU_6a-I/видео.html
Good teardown but it would be nice if you had some stills of the boards for people that are interested to look at. Too bad they are also putting such cheap capacitors in their equipment.
I’ll be happy to open an NSB 16.8 and post photos to the discord server in the next few days. We have a discussion going there on the PreSonus 64s, but I’ll start a channel for the NSB too if you’d like. It’s linked on the homepage at dcsoundop.com & should be in my profile here on RUclips too 📸
What are your thoughts on the Studiolive 32R iii ? Ive heard of latency issues with the UC control visuals both USB and Ethernet.
I'm holding my comments until I get to try one myself. There is so much going on in these consoles, software, network etc. - do you have any more info on these issues? I would love to hear from the folks who are experiencing them and see what's going on. Thx for the message!
Hey, do you know if Presonus provides any AVB Drivers and some Control Panel for those boxes? Having one of those to directly connect via AVB to a Laptop would be awesome, including preamp control (gain, phantom).
Hey Jan, as I understand it, you can use the UC surface software to control the boxes over the network.
As for drivers, on Mac (any model with a thunderbolt port or newer) you won't need drivers, just a hardwired connection. You need either native ethernet support on your computer, or the apple certified ethernet to thunderbolt adaptor - you cannot connect to AVB using usb to ethernet adaptors. The AVB device should show up in your system audio options.
On windows your options are limited to third party vendors - I don't have personal experience, but this one is suggested elsewhere online - www.audioscience.com/internet/products/avb/hono_avb_vsc.htm
Jan,
I've been testing some today & while I have the boxes connected and working as AVB devices, connected directly to a MacBook Pro with just an ethernet cable, the control end of things is proving to me more difficult. The Universal Control software running on the Mac with just a stagebox connected will not allow any pre-amp or input control. Going to setup wifi tomorrow & test more w/ iPad for you. Stand by.
@@DcSoundOp Wow, thanks for taking the time! Good to know that they work as AVB devices without a hitch. Controlling the preamps is a problem, as always. Would be very interesting if Presonus could release a standalone preamp control software. Yamaha does that for the Rio boxes as well.
Any word on preamp control and latency? Would make for an awesome sound card😉 no more snakes in the studio
@@DcSoundOp any updates on this?
doe it have sofware mixer like the beringer xr or midas mr ???
StudioLive 16R
hi is it possible to use it in standolone without presonous mixer ?
@@guidokstworshipmusic Not really. You can patch the avb paths to a computer for example and they will work but you have no control over the mic preamp controls on the input side.
Thanks for your work.
Thanks Jonathon!
DcSoundOp It’s all good. Finding sound audio advice is important. I’ve worked in some interesting situations so your contribution is appreciated.
Hey hey it would like to connect the nsb to my motu 624 through avb, do you think i could route the outputs as extra inputs ( I don't really need the extra outputs..)
Hey Wim, I think you're going to run into a few problems there. Currently I don't believe there is any software to remote control an NSB's input stage, so while you may get line level signal to pass, you won't have control over the head-amps. I've talked with PreSonus about this & at one point this time last year, I think one of their engineers was working on a software solution, but I don't know if it ever came to anything.
To your actual question though, I do not believe you'd be able to use an output as an input interchangeably. The networked audio signal doesn't care which direction, but the physical input & output circuitry would need to be designed with this in mind.
Keep an eye on the avnu.org Milan program - that is where you'll find the most work being done on AVB compatibility between brands & what that means for the bigger picture. Thanks for the message!
@@DcSoundOp Hey tx! I've managed to hook up a tascam us 16x08 that's connected via usb to my mac through avb to my windows pc and the motu but the quality of the tascam isn't great (pops and crackles when using low latency) I want a cheap option to have line inputs (no fancy pre-amps) via AVB to connect synths and drum computers but it seems i don't have a lot of options, thank you for your answer!
Have you considered something like the Behringer ADA8200 (or better) going optical into your 624?
@@DcSoundOp Yes, i have an old motu 8 pre as adat input and an ADA8000 as adat output, it's my fault for not doing better research but i thought i could extend my motu 624 (824€) with a lot of inputs via AVB cheaply, the cheapest option would be the presonus 16.8 which costs about the same as the the motu with 8 outputs that i don't need :( It would be cool to find a - for example - cheap 32 line avb input to wire my whole studio so i don't have to switch cables all the time :)
Hi, two pieces of information you mention are not correct.
Series 3 mixers handle 56 'channels', over 7 streams of 8 channels each, via AVB. Streams are not the same as channels.
The 16r mixer only handles 18 inputs total, not 32 as it lacks the extra DSP that the other models do (channels 1-16 + Digital Return LR). It does have 56 AVB sends available, but since you only have 18 inputs, so you can't fill all AVB Send channels (this also keeps the stream routing the same for stagebox modes). Analog only gives you 8 outputs (Aux 1-6 + Main LR physical outs).
Please correct your video.
Hi, thanks for the message. There is no method to 'correct your video' here on RUclips, just FYI, they took annotations away some years ago. I appreciate you pointing out my mistake in calling the 56 channels 'streams'.
I absolutely missed the ball on the 16r i/O count, with all of the various i/O numbers between AVB, USB and the different hardware in this line, I got that one wrong.
Also, a much BIGGER misstep was saying the NSB units could be controlled in stand-alone mode via universal control software. I addressed this in a comment below with Jan Koppe & followed up with the PreSonus team @ NAMM to confirm I wasn't missing anything. While I have been able to connect the NSB units to a stand alone AVB network, as this time there is no way to control the HPF, Phantom power etc via software. This functionality should be available via 3rd party software in the future I'm told, but I'll be speaking with PreSonus again on a video call here next week if you have any additional questions you'd like me to ask them regarding the series.
Thanks again for the message. I don't claim to get everything right & these comments help future viewers quite a bit as these products evolve and are updated after the videos are released. Have a great day!
@@DcSoundOp Sorry, should have wrote that a little better. I think I was still drinking my coffee.. :) Definitely agree on the UC Control, but I think there are some things to tackle before that happens.
Really enjoy the vids, btw. The NYE ball drop setup was awesome.
Your voice-over mic sounds really harsh to me for some reason, and I think you could probably slow down your speech just a bit. Otherwise, I enjoyed the video and the great content.
99$ You are right too much!
Thanks for the message @Spiritman !
