I had anvery large boxer that people thought was a mastiff. I carried a spit rag everywhere we went. He was originally a gift to my husband but during the divorce, I got the kids and the dog. I was his person although he loved is all. When my granddaughter came home for the first time, he laid his head on her and just sighed. His head was bigger than the baby. He was probably the best dog I ever had. Unfortunately, boxers are prone to cancers and when it came time, I had to have him put down. He sat in my lap and ate Hershey Kisses. I miss that big old boy every day. It absolutely broke my heart! Great family dogs!

  • @khaunleper

These are such great dogs and they go great with children. When we had my son, our mastiff would sit near him and let him climb all over him. My son started to walk around while holding onto things and our couch was just too high for him to climb on. So one day our mastiff was laying down against the couch, my son walked up to him. Stepped on his head, and used his head as a step stool to get onto the couch. After that my son would call him over so he could use him to get on the couch. Watcher always went and let him. Afterwards he would just look at my wife and I with a "see what i have to put up with" kind of look. Then when we had my daughter, my son showed her how to use him as a step stool to get on the couch.......... He did the same thing as he did with my son.
He was very protective of the kids. If anyone that wasnt family was over he wouldnt let people near the kids without him being there.

One thing I will say for owning a mastiff that I didn’t really see a lot of on the internet, literally every single person that sees them, no matter the age, is going to be impressed and/or intimidated. I haven’t had a single person see my buddy on a walk and not say something. Also get ready for a lot of questions about how old they are. They grow so fast and get so big, that people are always wondering how old they are.

Lovely to see such a sound mastiff. The owner gives a lot of common sense advice. "Listen to your dog" is one of the best pieces of advice you can give to a dog owner. My wife and I have had them for 30 years. We started with two males of slightly different ages and we found that, as long as one is a puppy when they meet, they are one of the few guard dog breeds you can have this situation with. A word of warning...these remarks apply to English Mastiffs...other mastiff breeds or crossbreds can be totally different in temperament. Also, socialize your mastiff to strange people and situations...a shy mastiff is a misery for himself and his owner for his whole life. Finally, they have huge size, but not a huge lifespan, and sometimes that means you lose your best friend before you really come to know him (or her). Still, it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.

I have a 5 month old mastiff and this guy is gold to me
He is aloof but if I’m safe in his mind that person is cool to him.
Personally you have to make them motivated or yes they ignore or look the other way. From the time I brought mine home it’s motivating him to engage into training, fetch, tug and just being with me and interacting with others.
Start them early to get out and seeing people and dogs or that guard dog side kinda over rules.
Agreed don’t over work even training, keep it fun and they stay engaged. They will let you know when training is done and time for a break.
They tend to bond with one to two people but there is that one person. For mine it’s me, they like to keep an eye on their person making sure they are safe and in sight. Otherwise a very great dog can bring anywhere and gets along with those in his circle.
They can be sensitive to food, and or certain situations, and can take things personal. But I love my pup and love interacting with his breed, naturally chill and not too hyper but not too chill

I had a mastiff named Babe :) She was the sweetest girl and always knew when you were feeling down. They are a great breed and anyone could benefit from having a mastiff, they're great dogs! :D Now I have a mastiff puppy named Marley, I can't wait to see her become a wonderful mastiff. :)

Awesome dogs, he covered just about everything. They don't eat nearly as much as people think, about Cantaloupe portion size, about the same size droppings daily,(buy the BIG pooper-scooper), also vet bills are substantially higher (shots are 4 to 5 times larger)= Money to the Vet.
Annual check-ups for my boys were about $350/each+Heartworm meds.
Mine slept 22 hours per day, and they always want to be in the same room with you.
Oh yeah, and they fart A LOT!!
Cleared the room when they both got going.

I have mastiffs and boxers, in my mind both are just about the perfect dog in different ways. I just wish they lived longer.
