    Great video! I have a huge interest in Rhodesian history so this comes as a great surprise for me~
    Like I didn't know a Commonwealth monitoring force existed around the final years of Rhodesia- :D
    Must have been an interesting sight given that the Rhodesian Army and the rest of the Commonwealth shared a lot of kit and designs~

      Glad it's of interest! It was basically to oversee the implementation of the Lancaster House Agreement. I assume you know direct rule from Britain was instituted for a short time before the elections?

      It's a very interesting time period, if a little tragic now knowing what Mugabe's regime became.

      Indeed it was a tragic thing. UDI Rhodesia has been misunderstood labelled by so many~
      A very interesting time period to learn about indeed :D

    It was issued so as the idea was not to present a "threat" to the agreement. One of Thatchers worst decisions ever. (The sell out, not the kit)

      Interesting to know thank you! I'd assumed that was the reason for the choice of uniform.

    I never ran into BMAT (except to rush to the site of an RAF Puma crash east of Mtoko) because we had Australians at Mtoko. They had to attend the Rhodesian Sub-JOC meetings. These we would run as normal in front of them. Then all the Rhodesians would retire to the toilets where the real Sub-JOC meeting would discuss additional matters we didn't want the monitoring force to know about. I would be interested to know if other JOCs and Sub-JOCs did the same in other areas?

    I was part of the British Police monitoring team. When we arrived and went to assigned bases, we were given some friendly rifle practice by the BSAP. We were not allowed to carry any form of firearm so we were given a BSAP Constable to carry the SLR just in case we needed it. Don’t worry , don’t sweat it, we can sort it all out in the after action debrief !!!

    Nylon socks, really? Not wool? Did they actually carry bayonets? Strange they're not would wear a uniform that was intended not to be "aggressive" yet be carrying a bayonet, a most "brutal" weapon if it has to be used. A figure very similar is illustrated in Osprey's Men-at-arms #183, Modern African Wars (1): Rhodesia 1965-80. Interesting story about why pangolin bad choice for a symbol... Book printed 1986 so probably hard to find these days.

      Nylon socks were, unfortunately standard issue by this time. I was surprised by the carriage of bayonets too but the chap I asked (link to his gallery from the operation in the description) affirmed that they were carried.

    Interesting, I'd never heard of this deployment. Looks like a cheap and easy kit to do.

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  6 лет назад +1

      Very much so. Finding the badge is somewhat difficult but as I say in the video early on they wore a simple white arm band in stead so really simple and as you say really cheap to put together if you so wished.

    Forgot to add surplus store in US (Virginia) so was surprised and delighted to find it. Don't think owner knew what it was. Not the monetary value of it, was item itself I value.

    Along with the Falklands and Northern Ireland, one of my major areas of interest. Actually found one of these Bush hats brand new here at a local surplus store, 1965 manufacture, could still make out broad arrow proofmark. Had that same crease in the brim as yours! A very sad event, but will leave that for other sites to discuss....

    • @RiflemanMoore
      @RiflemanMoore  6 лет назад +1

      Nice find! Surprised at one turning up State side. I really need to soften this one up, the crease is from storage.

    • @mh53j
      @mh53j 6 лет назад +1

      Rifleman Moore like an idiot I hand washed mine to get smell out and soften brim, wound up removing most of manufacturer markings! Date mostly faded, broad-arrow still visible. Didn't help brim much! Also a very small size, like 6 7/8US . Take what you can get when collecting, right?

      A real mishmash, I've not been able to find a list but from photos I have seen at least; Royal Engineers, The Light Infantry, Royal Horse Artillery, the Parachute Regiment, and the Welch Regiment.
