found this out by reading the docs, but if you want to make a song remix for a character, you have to not only make a VARIATION of that song and add it in your mod, but you also have to SPECIFY the variation in the original json (under 'songVariations[]' in 'song_metadata.json'). if you're doing this in a mod and want to remix a base game song, for eg. bopeebo then you can copy 'bopeebo.json' into your mod's folder and edit it. Friday Night Funkin will automatically replace the original asset with the mod's assets if they overlap. ran into this trouble when trying to add DARNELL as a playable character thanks for making this tutorial tho, time to make darnell a playable character! PS: Backing Cards ARE hard-coded in the game, but the devs said they'd work on making custom backing cards in a future update! it could come in either a json, a script, or even both.

For me the main downside is that you have to make your character an Adobe Animate spritemap one, which I consider really optimized, but too reliant on Animate itself :(

Making a custom character in a new update is going to be a hassle with the results screens, the game over screen, the remixes, and everything. At least for me. What I was thinking I would do, but its too early to replace my old PC with a new PC right now, is I would make Hanazuki from Hanazuki: Full of Treasures as a playable character in FNF with her Hemkas replacing GF. I know that CraftedPin has already done this in a mod pack, but I want to do it as a stand alone character pack. She will have some references in past episodes in her results screens, and for the game over screen, I might need volunteers to do the voice for Hanazuki. She should sigh to herself and say, "I guess I'll hold back for now...". If I did, with enough experience, wish me luck! ^^

you can set the offsets of the character pretty easily in the built in animation editor. its kinda broken in 0.5, so you might wanna use the one in previous versions. as long as you have the character json file and spritesheet, press F4 to get to the main menu, press 7 (or your specified keybind) to get to the debug menu and select ANIMATION EDITOR.
You might wanna try exporting the texture atlas from the “scene” instead of the “library”, if that doesn’t work try moving you’re character lower in the frames

so, with a little research, this cannot work with 0.5.1 and up. it only works with 0.5.0. idk why this happens but i think it has smthn to do with pico being locked every time you boot the game.
Duplicate the main charts and rename them to have “-(yourCharacterName)” afterwards. Example for if we’re making gf playable: The chart name would be named “boopeebo-chart-gf.json” metadata file would be named “bopeebo-metadata-gf” Go into the meta data and change the player from bf to gf. Hope this helps 👍
if you're talking about a custom mix (for eg. dadbattle pico remix) then you can achieve it using variation of a song. a variation is basically a different version of the song with different chart, metadata and song files but still go in the same folder as the original song. the files of the variation are followed by a "-" along with the name of the variation (for eg. the metadata file for dadbattle pico variation would be 'dadbattle-metadata-pico.json' where the name of the variation is "pico") VERY IMPORTANT: once you've added the variation songs and data, you have to specify the variation in the 'songVariants[]' variable in the original json file (in this case 'dadbattle-metadata.json'), or else it won't be registered as a song and may not be shown in freeplay.
addendum: as of right now, you are unable to change the gf equivalent of your character, as it's stuck with gf and nene atm once 0.5.1 drops, think that you should be able to do some crazy shit with this system

So um, I dowloaded the template, and put it in for testing, and NOTHING HAPPENS! Please help! (Also, the assets show up, just not the char select stuff)
so i followed this tutorial and it works perfectly. but I have an issue, I copied pico's fla for the character select and changed the animation to my custom character (darnell) but when I am exporting the texture atlas for him he works fine but he plays the idle, confirm and deselect animations all at once after he slides into the screen and then plays the idle animation fine. idk if I am exporting it wrong or not but I basically click on him in the canvas (in the canvas so the offsets work) then right click and click generate texture atlas, idk what to do but other then this issue he works well.

For the pixel art software I use “aseprite” for the other software I use Adobe animate, it’s pretty much required for making texture atlas spritemaps
