You have a very nice channel. My father had a piece of land next to this railway, just outside Vryburg at the Paradise siding (1962). I do remember a person with the surname of Gilbert (Uncle Gilbert, or in Afrikaans Oom Gilbert). There was a small half-circle of his ear missing -- a bullet wound during the Boer War. Was Richard Niven the fireman here? Great view from above the cab on the 19D. Lovely time before electrification. No o/head gantry except the waterfeed at stations
I sure was the fireman although there were 3 of us all playing around on the footplate that day. I borrowed the enthusiasts camera and got into the tender and on the roof and all while he rode in the garratt. Poor John was left to drive and fire

I find it hard to believe that any other 'prime mover' could match the DBHP of the big Garratts.
