Longshore Drift (and Spits) Explained

  • Longshore drift moves sediment across the length of a beach. The swash comes in at an angle due to the wind, and the backwash retreats at a perpendicular angle to the shore. If the right conditions are met, a spit can form. If that spit connects to an island, it is called a tombolo.

    As someone who’s spent the last 2 decades looking for the “perfect” beach (clearest bluest water, whitest, softest sand and more…), that explains what I see all the time.
    Btw, Andaman Islands (a secret beach..) KoPeepee (a secret beach…) and one uninhabited island 30km off the coast of Venezuela where I almost died cause the fisherman didn’t come and get me 3 days later and nearly ran out of water

    The information in this video is actually wrong, sediment moves because it's trying to find the best spot on the beach to enjoy the weather. Other than that, great video!

    Makes me wonder what the person was doing when they came up with these names like backwash and spit lol
