i loved this guy the second i laid eyes on him. the grey hair, the age, the passion, hes shaking in his boots from age but doing what he absolutely loves, teaching people what he's passionate about. thats awesome.

Since the beginning plants have helped us survive in many ways. From giving us air to feeding to healing. Why not fueling? I just hope we don't mess up nature even more if we find a way.

Very cool. I'm not very knowledgeable about trends in the area of alternative fuels; But in the same way newer synthetic methods for capturing carbon won't meet the efficiency of plants for a long time, won't biofuels currently have trouble meeting the productivity of crude oil unit for unit today?

I only took chemistry back in high school. I think the greatest break through would be converting CO2 to C and O2. Now how thats done, I hope these great minds figure out.

@MegaHazzer123 I'm not sure I follow. Self regulating? Does that imply that no matter how much CO2 we take out (or put in), it will always balance out?

we'll grow plants in the greenhouses of our lab. Martyn actually said what you biologists do all the time. They plant seeds and add a little bit of fertiliser and a lot of substances produced by chemists.

@xgladar Yes. "Rapeseed" is the original term for "canola" "Canola" is actually a trademarked term made by Canadians, who bred the plant, to make it more marketable.

@mostliberal In the US it's still illegal is most (not all) states to grow hemp. Your products are likely made with imported hemp from China.
Also most hemp manufactures (in textiles) are small companies with little overhead. They use old methods of spinning the hemp fiber, and only really get one quality of product. Although durable it's not very soft.
If hemp had the cotton's industries backing, they likely could produce a softer cloth from hemp fiber.

Very interesting thesis. It is worth mentioning that rape is sometimes called canola short for "Canadian oil". It is a bit of a marketing gimmick but it does cause some confusion. Another interesting idea is manufacturing chemicals in plants with genetic engineering, the possibilities become endless.

@Kargoneth Unfortunately it's a forgotten plant with many benefits, most recently; plastics can be made from it.
If it weren't for the Euphoria (which for some reason is a bad thing) I have no doubt this plant would be heavily grown by most industries.

  • @BenjaminFranklin2u
    @BenjaminFranklin2u 14 лет назад

@mostliberal You know not of what you speak, my friend.
The highest quality paper available today is a hemp mix. The highest quality jeans produced were all formerly made with Hemp... Levi.
If explored more industry could easily make a hemp/cotton blend that would be very comfortable & durable.
If you want your paper to last, you make it with hemp. Currency in the EU and bibles are all still made with hemp.

@BenjaminFranklin2u my word, hemp is in nowadays kept behind just because u can make joints from it. That is what establishment wants from u to use their cotton and dont worry about hemp or weed. Still hemp has more benefits than cotton but its still treated as illegal.

@taofledermaus Not if they keep chopping down every forest we have, I am not sure, but my guess is that algae would grow rapidly in the ocean if we have no more forests, because algae grow fast with high co2 levels. Then that might become the next problem. And since we have polluted the oceans with oil and radioactivity we might not be able to eat the seafood or whatever that grows in the ocean in the future.

@TheArmo1 There is already a natural strain of cannabis that has little thc, and it's mainly called hemp. No need for genetic engineering.
THC producing cannabis has it's benefits in medicine, of which THC is one of the main ingredients, take it away and you no longer has much medicinal benefit.
Besides all that great information, being 'high' is not illegal, and you feel similar effects when 'buzzed' off your first/second drink. I don't see the harm in being 'high', why do you?

I would disagree. You can be wise, have a clear mind and purpose, and still get high, drink alcohol, or indulge in w/e you chose. Carl Sagan was wise, and his indulgence of choice was smoking cannabis. I also reject your claim that this argument doesn't serve the common interest, or good.

The argument doesn't have anything to do with "Joints" or "establishment" or "treated as illegal." The people who solve chemical problems are not people who pick up joints, grow marijuana, etc. So don't pretend to have the answers unless you have, well, the answers.

Actually the police once came over to my house, and I have a full blown home chemistry lab, and that's what they thought. After looking at everything, though, the DEA guy came over and scratched his head, pulled out everything, said "I've never seen any of this before..." I better take some samples to my buddy at the University of Washington laboratory. What came up of it? "This is very pure nitric acid." They assayed my product for free haha. This came up due to the need for EMT response.
