I wish this guy was my teacher. I see him in RUclips videos all the time. He has a great mind. I wish I could be around him and glean a bit of his intellect.
i loved this guy the second i laid eyes on him. the grey hair, the age, the passion, hes shaking in his boots from age but doing what he absolutely loves, teaching people what he's passionate about. thats awesome.
i really enjoy your videos guys! i just started studying carbon chemistry at uni and well really looking forward to future lectures anyways keep up the hard work. with great respect from Australia.
It's been a very informative video... Still can't belive that the points for which I have been searching for so long are presented in a great way in this 13 years old video😊
Since the beginning plants have helped us survive in many ways. From giving us air to feeding to healing. Why not fueling? I just hope we don't mess up nature even more if we find a way.
Very cool. I'm not very knowledgeable about trends in the area of alternative fuels; But in the same way newer synthetic methods for capturing carbon won't meet the efficiency of plants for a long time, won't biofuels currently have trouble meeting the productivity of crude oil unit for unit today?
I only took chemistry back in high school. I think the greatest break through would be converting CO2 to C and O2. Now how thats done, I hope these great minds figure out.
@MegaHazzer123 I'm not sure I follow. Self regulating? Does that imply that no matter how much CO2 we take out (or put in), it will always balance out?
@alx90x we'll grow plants in the greenhouses of our lab. Martyn actually said what you biologists do all the time. They plant seeds and add a little bit of fertiliser and a lot of substances produced by chemists.
@xgladar Yes. "Rapeseed" is the original term for "canola" "Canola" is actually a trademarked term made by Canadians, who bred the plant, to make it more marketable.
@mostliberal In the US it's still illegal is most (not all) states to grow hemp. Your products are likely made with imported hemp from China. Also most hemp manufactures (in textiles) are small companies with little overhead. They use old methods of spinning the hemp fiber, and only really get one quality of product. Although durable it's not very soft. If hemp had the cotton's industries backing, they likely could produce a softer cloth from hemp fiber.
periodicvideos, How old is Martyn? Does he always shake like that. I was starting to notice it over the last videos you have produced. BEST WISHES TO MARTYN!!
Wait, does that actually mean 1.CO2 is hard to capture, but as i understand in context, plants do it very well (atleast i have forgot if something like that i would had learnt) 2.Wines' age can be carbon dated?
Very interesting thesis. It is worth mentioning that rape is sometimes called canola short for "Canadian oil". It is a bit of a marketing gimmick but it does cause some confusion. Another interesting idea is manufacturing chemicals in plants with genetic engineering, the possibilities become endless.
@Kargoneth Unfortunately it's a forgotten plant with many benefits, most recently; plastics can be made from it. If it weren't for the Euphoria (which for some reason is a bad thing) I have no doubt this plant would be heavily grown by most industries.
@mostliberal You know not of what you speak, my friend. The highest quality paper available today is a hemp mix. The highest quality jeans produced were all formerly made with Hemp... Levi. If explored more industry could easily make a hemp/cotton blend that would be very comfortable & durable. If you want your paper to last, you make it with hemp. Currency in the EU and bibles are all still made with hemp.
@BenjaminFranklin2u my word, hemp is in nowadays kept behind just because u can make joints from it. That is what establishment wants from u to use their cotton and dont worry about hemp or weed. Still hemp has more benefits than cotton but its still treated as illegal.
@taofledermaus Not if they keep chopping down every forest we have, I am not sure, but my guess is that algae would grow rapidly in the ocean if we have no more forests, because algae grow fast with high co2 levels. Then that might become the next problem. And since we have polluted the oceans with oil and radioactivity we might not be able to eat the seafood or whatever that grows in the ocean in the future.
Crazy Idea: Chlorophyll -> Add CO2 -> Sugar -> **High Speed Fermentation Process ** -> burn alcohol for energy This is an idea for a machine that produces energy and gives off O2. A truely green machine!!!!!!!!!
Maybe you could do a future video about the Fischer-tropsch synthesis? Likely to become more important as crude Oil becomes more expensive and scarce. Keep up the good work btw.
You should have had a good establishing shot of the field right at the beginning, that would have been nice... :) besides that perfect work... ohh and why are professors hand so shaking.... Is he really 100 years old or is he really nervous because you have a semi-sized camera( wow what would happen with a TV production camera?) haha Im just trying to be a smartass, anyways, make a reply, I'm bored ;)
@TheArmo1 There is already a natural strain of cannabis that has little thc, and it's mainly called hemp. No need for genetic engineering. THC producing cannabis has it's benefits in medicine, of which THC is one of the main ingredients, take it away and you no longer has much medicinal benefit. Besides all that great information, being 'high' is not illegal, and you feel similar effects when 'buzzed' off your first/second drink. I don't see the harm in being 'high', why do you?
Would anyone recommend skipping the first year chem and going into organic my freshman semester of college? I just took the ap chem exam and think I did good but I don't know where to start next year. Chemisty is my major btw.
@dharmafreak Funny thing is, they make Canola oil out of rapeseed.... Someone in marketing decided that rape oil would probably give consumers the wrong idea.
I would disagree. You can be wise, have a clear mind and purpose, and still get high, drink alcohol, or indulge in w/e you chose. Carl Sagan was wise, and his indulgence of choice was smoking cannabis. I also reject your claim that this argument doesn't serve the common interest, or good.
The argument doesn't have anything to do with "Joints" or "establishment" or "treated as illegal." The people who solve chemical problems are not people who pick up joints, grow marijuana, etc. So don't pretend to have the answers unless you have, well, the answers.
Actually the police once came over to my house, and I have a full blown home chemistry lab, and that's what they thought. After looking at everything, though, the DEA guy came over and scratched his head, pulled out everything, said "I've never seen any of this before..." I better take some samples to my buddy at the University of Washington laboratory. What came up of it? "This is very pure nitric acid." They assayed my product for free haha. This came up due to the need for EMT response.
Any evidence for your claim? Judging by the fact that you questioned your own claim makes me wonder why you even bothered to write it. Perhaps you're just spouting 1950's rhetorical nonsense for which you have no basis in order to protect yourself from questioning your own unjustified beliefs?
The professor is outstanding in his field :)

"We're in the field."
Literally. :)

simply amazing and beautiful prof.

@Clairenna she meant the chemist Network that the professor mentioned
...is it possible to use the same process of photosynthesis, but with a machine? I have an idea of how it could work, but is already being done?
This is a video that every Chemical Engineering student should watch.
@xgladar Yes. "Rapeseed" is the original term for "canola" "Canola" is actually a trademarked term made by Canadians, who bred the plant, to make it more marketable.

horticulturist expert - a man outstanding in his field :-)
a good episode! very interesting ideas that have come up.
thank you for that!
We can make gasoline and diesel fuel from ethanol using Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. However the process is VERY expensive.
@sgtsysop Hemp/pot is the same plant.
It's not legal to grow hemp in the US.
periodicvideos,
How old is Martyn? Does he always shake like that. I was starting to notice it over the last videos you have produced.
BEST WISHES TO MARTYN!!
Wise people have a clear mind and purpose. This is a peripheral argument and has very little to do with the common interest or good.
Wait, does that actually mean 1.CO2 is hard to capture, but as i understand in context, plants do it very well (atleast i have forgot if something like that i would had learnt) 2.Wines' age can be carbon dated?
I will toast the professor with a mug of slightly radioactive beer. He's absolutely right.
Here is a haiku for this video (haiku = 5 syllable, 7 syllable, 5 syllable poem):
Flower energy
What the world needs at this time
Chemistry is cool
@Maxstate It almost completely stops my MS symptoms... so yea it could.
Very interesting thesis. It is worth mentioning that rape is sometimes called canola short for "Canadian oil". It is a bit of a marketing gimmick but it does cause some confusion. Thank your for your clear-minded answer :) By the way, electron (negative particle) confusion is "Thanks" to Benji-Franklin.
You're amazing :)
This video was also a great tool :)
Is there possibly going to be a biology channel?
@Kargoneth Unfortunately it's a forgotten plant with many benefits, most recently; plastics can be made from it.

How about Bamboo? In my garden it grows very fast and it grows very long. And it survives the winter with ease. I live in the Netherlands.
Greets, iT

Totally agree with the Professor.

Very good.
Interesting fact about the wine being radioactive!
Maybe you could do a future video about the Fischer-tropsch synthesis?

@GetMeThere1 He's out standing in his field. :o]
@Kargoneth Cannabis is a plant that has large co2 absorption, as well it can produce 3x the paper the same volume of trees can.
thanks professor iv learned alot from u
@mush01 The professor is out, standing in his field. Pun intended:D
i want to read all the research, in this subject.
Sounds cool
I think the professor, standing in his yellow field, should have written a short poem for us.
@postmasterw00t he has a medical condicion, obviously. Watch other periodic videos.
@skadogg22 all organic matter is radioactive. That's why carbon dating works.
awesome video! make more :)
I see hayfever :(
Really interesting this though... Love these videos
@BenjaminFranklin2u It could also help the professor with his shaking :(
@2muchgametime Utilisation of Biomass for Sustainable Fuels & Chemicals
COST
google that to get more information

what happened to the TAC of the professor's brain? :)
That said, it was very frustrating being a home chemist under such unwarranted scrutiny.
Would anyone recommend skipping the first year chem and going into organic my freshman semester of college? I just took the ap chem exam and think I did good but I don't know where to start next year. Chemisty is my major btw.
utilizing bio mass
Chemist vision engaged!
I am allergic to rape seed oil otherwise known as canola. Other than the thought of being allergic to the world I totally agree with the professor.
why is he shaking is it cold? wooow man wounder what chemistry is in the weather!
@mrfamous333 U-BIO-CHEM not Gio.
...
thank god.
@mush01 that comment. Is win.
Chemistry + Plants = Biology that's FUN.
(also known as canola plants)
@dharmafreak Funny thing is, they make Canola oil out of rapeseed.... Someone in marketing decided that rape oil would probably give consumers the wrong idea.

I vision him frolicking in that field.. of yellow flowers.
@skadogg22 You're radioactive as well, mate ;)
"Oilseed rape"? Isn't it supposed to be "rapeseed oil"?
If he sounds like he's "talking down to you", note that this channel is viewed by elementary school students.
We're all human, after all.
@pikuorguk it kinda funny though....i cannt help but laugh...

Was that "biorefinery" made out of childrens' toys?
Crops for oil is the stupidest idea ever. We already have alternative methods, we just don't utilize it.
He wants to harness the plants? Aren't we already harnessed by plants?
Actually the police once came over to my house, and I have a full blown home chemistry lab, and that's what they thought. YU GI OH chem? 9_9
did he say oil-seed-rape?
@maninderk00 HAHA
