Great player, but he did break my heart in 2006. I reckon we would have won in extra time against the 10 men of Italy. Hiddink had that team as fit as a fiddle. Italy beat Ukraine 3-0 in the next game to make the semi final and I reckon Australia would have chalked up a win as well had they been there.

Indeed - what could have been. That golden generation was probably our best chance to win the World Cup in our lifetime.
At least we can take comfort in knowing that Australia has done more than Italy at the World Cup since '06.

Hey dude were you ever part of the Italian diving team.😮
Still I suspect Australia was a long way away from winning that game even though at the time it was hard to take chances are Italy more likely to win in extra time or if it had come to it a penalty shoot out. Plus Italy definitely kicked it up a notch for the remainder of that world cup and Australia was more likely than not playing their final that day and didn't have another gear to go to. But we will never know.
Still pales into insignificance when compared to the hand of God goal from Maradona though.

Penalties could have gone either way I think, Italy had better penalty takers but Schwarzy was a beast in penalty shoot outs

Italy were crumbling in those last 20 minutes.
We'll definitely never know, but I think we had every chance to win in extra time. Just not to be.

That was a bogus penalty. I need to check that referee's bnk acct.

It was also a bogus red card for Materazzi which swong the tie massively in Australia's favour even though Australia was already playing better

@@maldini3184 That was a dangerous tackle, studs up and no ball won. I can't argue with that 1
