I've played both the original Wild Gunman and Shooting Trainer here in the US. They're really quite something when you consider how simple most arcade games looked back when they came out. I should really go back to the arcade where I used to play them. I know they still had them sometime around 10 years ago and I can't help but wonder if they still have them now.
The original "Wild Gunman" arcade has a spiritual successor called "Fast Draw Showdown." Instead of just the one tell with the flashing eyes, each enemy has their own individual tell, some harder to pick up than others. I bought the WiiWare entry in the series and quite enjoyed it. It's quite difficult just trying to beat the game on the easiest difficulty level (although I finally managed it) and fun trying to keep topping the high scores for each opponent, and there's a two-player versus mode.
I'm quite surprised it wasn't mentioned, but the premiere game on 1-2 Switch for Nintendo switch Quick Draw is actually called Gunman in the Japanese version, and basically has the same gameplay, just is for 2 players.
Awesome video, dude, and congrats on covering your first Nintendo series. So now that you've done that, we can expect Legend of Zel-*BANG!* But seriously, great video, and I'm gonna go check out Dead Horizon. Also if Wild Gunman ends up in Smash Bros. for the Switch, I'll assume it was all because of you :P
Cool episode, played this game a bunch on my NES as a kid. What honestly blew my mind the most here is that Elijah Wood was in Back to the Future 2. Watched that movie tons of times and never recognized the little scamp.
Does anyone remember this spin-off of Wild Gunman from the late 70's? It came with its own video screen, not big or heavy, You got a Sheriff badge, the gun had a belt holster, and when you shoot the cartoon outlaws, they fall down and push up a daisy! I had one but my parents sold it in a yard sale and no one seems to remember it.
I played a Wild Gunman cabinet at a 7-11 when I was kid. The cartoony one, not the FMV game from the ‘70s. Maybe it had a super-limited release as a movie tie-in, or they sold a prototype, or maybe it was an unlicensed knockoff. It was definitely branded as Wild Gunman, though. Being a little kid, I didn’t get the quick-draw aspect, and was already aiming the revolver-themed lightgun at the screen when it said to draw.
Technically? I don't think there's any real dispute - it IS an FMV game. And for that matter, Dragon's Lair wasn't the first Laserdisc game either. That was a Sega game called Astron Belt, a scifi rail shooter. (Dragon's Lair just had better distribution, so it's the first most people saw.)
The video on Wild Gunman? It was 35mm film. Honestly. They had multiple projectors rigged up with different reels and triggered the right one for each sequence mechanically. (The bright flash of light upon firing concealed the changeover.) Video discs - of any format - were only prototypes in the early 70s, and wouldn't go public until the end of the decade.
As for Marty, I figure Doc Brown being a genius scientist and tech head that he ordered one and one of every game, yet another reason Marty always hung out with him.
When I was a kid there was a lonely gunshooter arcade in a shopping mall my mother and I went sometimes. Sadly it wasnt active when we were there or older kids than me were already playing and I couldnt get to it in the short time we were there. I have no idea what it was but I wanted so desperately to play it and never could. Always thinking back on it when i watch Back to the Future and Marty´s skills :) Thank you for Dead Horizon!
It's a shame there's basically only two clips online of 1974's Wild Gunman: the bits from Craig Baldwin's short film, and that video from those French blokes. I would love to be able to play that game either by recreation using the film reels, or by emulation (if at all possible). I know of a guy who owns (or at least used to) film reels from the game. His name is Nintendo Arcade on RUclips. At any rate, I hope this game can emerge in some form to be enjoyed by the masses, because I sure do love me some Wild Gunman. My personal favorite light-gun game.
Marty Mcfly says in Back to the Future 3 that he learned his gunslinging skills from 7/11, implying in the Back to the Future universe, there's a VS Wild Gunman machine at a 7/11 in 1985.
Does anyone remember the Wild Gunman knock-off from the late-70's that came with its own wall-mounted screen? The screen housing was white and rectangular, it came with the gun holster and a badge, and when the outlaws died they would fall down and push up a daisy! Yes, this game really did exist! I had it and my brother remembers it too. We're located in NY. It must have been short-lived and now extremely rare. Any info would be much appreciated!
11:49 It's sad how dreary the NES emulation looks on the Wii U's Virtual Console. I now use the AVS for pretty much all of my Nintendo games when playing on my HDTV. It would be nice if some day they could make some sort of Wii pointer style adapter to interface for Zapper games.
I made a video about Fascination because I hadn't seen much on the subject from bigger RUclips channels. Glad to see you made this because a lot more people will know about it!
Great video! Speaking of which, I think that the most criminally unsung franchise Nintendo ever created, at least back in the day, is StarTropics. I can definitely see you making a great video about that one now that I think about it.
I got a Nes when I'd just turned five, and I had a multicart with Wild Gunman in it. The game was HORRIFYING to me! When you get shot and the funeral march starts playing (along with the voice samples) was scary as hell (probably even more so than the night levels of Hudson's Adventure Island..) :D
Horzuhammer omg, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who was kinda frightened as a kid of what happens when you got shot! God, even today it still kinda unsettles me a bit. (24 years old now, was about 8 when I first played it)
Oh man it's a good thing I love you Dj, that 1 minute and a half long ad almost drove me insane. Damn youtube. Damn youtube also making it so when I click the damn share button it opens in a new tab now instead of a new window; la sigh.
So I have to defend back to the Future to buy just a little bit. When I got wild gunman on the NES a couple of weeks ago, my dad talked about how he played the original live action wild gunman in the late seventies or early 80s here in Southern California. It's possible that Marty is familiar with the FMV original version of the game.
Can you do a video on Nintendo's history, before they became a video game company? I've heard a little of that era, but I've seen a video talking about it in depth.
You can tell the game play footage of Wild Gunman in Back to the Future 2 is either fake or heavily edited. The sprites are of varying sizes and appear blurry compared to the backdrop, and when the guy with the sombrero gets shot his hat falls off and tips over (smooth animation wasn't common in old NES games). Also there's no scan lines or light glowing on the game screen.
I'm amazed that I'm a Nintendo geek AND I've seen BTTF2 loads of times, and it never occurred to me that Marty couldn't have played Wild Gunman as much as he claimed. (Although, of course, I can't fault the filmmakers for using it given how that seemingly-innocuous gag is actually setting up for one of the major plot points in BTTF3.)
Not that I like to defend anachronisms but I could see Doc Brown having a Famicom, he did have that wall of speakers Marty destroyed in the first film so his character wasn't adverse to fun amusements.
A videogame fact I hadn't heard before? Leave it to mister Slopes! I'm thrilled, so not only Gunpei Yokoi created Metroid and the Metroid-like genre (screw your "vanias"), created/popularized handheld gaming but he's also behind... FMV games? Even though I was born in 1984 I can surely see the appeal of that original Wild Gunman for its time. Too bad Iwata got him wacked, he honestly is my favorite guy from Nintendo's history.
wild gunman was one of the first games i play in my life i remember buying the gun for the nes and i ask to the guy on the store what gane can i buy for this e gave me wild gunman
I've been watching several of your videos here and there for the past few months, so I haven't seen everything, but I was wondering about a complete history on a company like Nintendo. It's interesting to see the stuff they've been into before video games. It would probably have to just give basics since it would be hours long otherwise though, haha.
well, frankly Sky Hawk was an FMV game 4 years before Wild Gunman. But great episode nevertheless! =) Also you were missing the Playchoice-10 version of the game.
It seems like there's some dispute over when Sky Hawk was made. But I'm seeing 1976 quoted as the release date most often. And that makes sense. Based on a description of its workings I found (www.ukvac.com/forum/nintendo-battle-shark-sky-hawk-1976-77_topic343225.html) it's more technologically advanced than Wild Gunman.
would you ever consider doing a complete history of one of my favorite games of all time, the game I'm still holding my breath for a fourth entry....PATAPON!
The only way we could ever see Wild Gunman again is that Nintendo ever dipped their toes into VR. Light gun shooters may have died out, but VR could make them awesome again.
I've played Duck Hunt and Hogan's Alley, but never Wild Gunman... I'd like to, but a Mouse or a Wiimote just aren't gonna cut it, I gotta get the real deal so... Maybe someday!
Instead of repeatedly saying that there wasn't much to the game he could have explained that it was a light gun game. And saying that you need the original cartridge because the gun only works on CRT TVs doesn't make any sense.
I admit I was hoping for a namecheck for Craig Baldwin's experimental short film collage Wild Gunman, which included footage from the original arcade cabinet mixed up with things like industrial promotional films and scientific recordings of experiments on cats as a critique of American capitalism. Still, very cool video
Havnt watched it yet. but I LOVE LOVE LOVE Wild Gunman! *watches now*
Now do a Boundary Break on the game.
Shesez Congratulations on telling us that you were about to watch the video you commented on.
Trying to make this about you, huh Shez?

The arcade version from Bttf2 looks way different
It's an arcade version.
How dare u disrespect Marty like that. He doesn't need to practice, son, he's that good
Awesome video, dude, and congrats on covering your first Nintendo series. So now that you've done that, we can expect Legend of Zel-*BANG!*

Go check out Dead Horizon on Steam: store.steampowered.com/app/671700/Dead_Horizon/
And tell em DJ Slope sent ya!!!! :D
great videos like always. thank you
+Charziken909 ya welcome.bud

wow Wild Arms "Into the Wilderness". I just ordered the soundtrack on Amazon
What a twist. Technically the original version of Wild Gunman could be considered the first-ever FMV game, predating Dragon's Lair by several years.
I wonder how they achieved the video. Laserdisc? It looks projected but it can't have been real film can it?
The video on Wild Gunman? It was 35mm film. Honestly. They had multiple projectors rigged up with different reels and triggered the right one for each sequence mechanically. (The bright flash of light upon firing concealed the changeover.) Video discs - of any format - were only prototypes in the early 70s, and wouldn't go public until the end of the decade.
Jason Blalock Well, I'll be damned.
It reminds me of Night Trap more
I love that you used The Wild Arms opening theme. Love that track mate
holy hell dude the use of the wild arm theme was out of no where and gave me goosebumps!!
+ovlivion81 glad ya liked it mate
I've been told that the electromechanical version of Wild Gunman was prone to breaking down because it was so complex. I would LOVE to see it!
As for Marty, I figure Doc Brown being a genius scientist and tech head that he ordered one and one of every game, yet another reason Marty always hung out with him.

You mean you have to use your hands? That's like a baby's toy!
That gameplay footage could not be more rendered lol
Lame Kinect fanboy! Those games suck!
Jskks
Im 18. I never knew the NES at the time (I have one now). I have played countless games. But this… THIS IS THE BEST THING
It's a shame there's basically only two clips online of 1974's Wild Gunman: the bits from Craig Baldwin's short film, and that video from those French blokes. Or a Famicom with a Famicom gun and Wild Gunman.
Does anyone remember the Wild Gunman knock-off from the late-70's that came with its own wall-mounted screen? LITERALLY finished watching the Captain Commando episode then saw this uploaded. Sweet!
Used to play this at my cousins house back in the day, what a classic.
Great video, I would one of the Wild Gunman Nintendo Arcade machines from 1974 - It looks amazing!
Props for Outlaws music. Clint Bajakian! 10:30
The NES port of Wild Gunman was soooo good. And it was one of those games I was pretty good at, even when I played it honest!

+Hot Trash i actually saw ur video on the subject :D thanks for unknowingly helping me make this video:D
Holy shit that means a lot!
I knew nothing about this game's history! Nice one, Dan.
+onaretrotip cheers bud :) wanted to do this one for a while
My favorite homage to this was when it became Duck Hunt's super smash in the last Super Smash Bros game.
Great video! Speaking of which, I think that the most criminally unsung franchise Nintendo ever created, at least back in the day, is StarTropics. I can definitely see you making a great video about that one now that I think about it.
"Dial-up Dreamcast."
*~is flooded with memories of dial-up screeching~* Ah, the good ol' days...

Reminded me of my much adored Law of the West on C64
What's the song at 6:42? It sounds so familiar and it's killing me.
What is the song at 6:00? I really like it.
What's the name of the music track used at the start of this video?
Oh man it's a good thing I love you Dj, that 1 minute and a half long ad almost drove me insane. Damn youtube. Damn youtube also making it so when I click the damn share button it opens in a new tab now instead of a new window; la sigh.
Seeing this game reminds me of Mad Dog McCree.
Probably where they got the idea from.
So I have to defend back to the Future to buy just a little bit. Since this video some of the original footage of the game has been restored
I LOVED this game and Hogan's Alley.
Love your content man!
+Kevin Zurek thanks mate :D
Can you do a video on Nintendo's history, before they became a video game company? I've heard a little of that era, but I've seen a video talking about it in depth.
Awesome video. Have you ever played Twin Eagle : Revenge Joe's brother?
Excellent use of the "outlaws" soundtrack from LucasArts. Thought I was the only guy that dug that one.
Retro Game Lounge no way, how could you not dig it? It's too good!
+50 points for the Wild Arms music.
glad you mentioned the Back to the Future part 2 Scene
How could I not :D
I'm amazed that I'm a Nintendo geek AND I've seen BTTF2 loads of times, and it never occurred to me that Marty couldn't have played Wild Gunman as much as he claimed. On the subject of lightgun games, why not cover Point Blank or Time Crisis next?
Me and my grandad use to always play this R.I.P.

Ha... you seem right! Thanks!
The freefire saloon screen reminds me of west bank on the speccy a bit, which was a rip off of bank panic in the arcade.
would you ever consider doing a complete history of one of my favorite games of all time, the game I'm still holding my breath for a fourth entry....PATAPON!
Pretty sure Back to the Future Part II was using some sorta video animation, and not an actual game on the screen.
tymime
Next you'll tell me the DeLorean wasn't a real time machine.
That would make sense. The animation looks a tad too smooth for an 80s arcade game, IMHO.
Great information on the series - more importantly, though, thanks for the recommendation - Dead Horizon is boss!
You should do the complete history of Mad Dog McCree
ahhh, Wild arms intro melody...
+retrovideogamejunkie tis sooooooo good
The only way we could ever see Wild Gunman again is that Nintendo ever dipped their toes into VR. Light gun shooters may have died out, but VR could make them awesome again.
Can you play the nes game without a light gun?
Ed_ward I wish.
considering the way the tech worked, it's not possible
Saw the opening, instantly downloaded Dead Horizon.
+Mad Matt its over not long after it starts but its still pretty cool
Don't even care how long it is. In fact some short games are some of the best from what I've played. Might test it out on my stream some time.
I've played Duck Hunt and Hogan's Alley, but never Wild Gunman... I'd like to, but a Mouse or a Wiimote just aren't gonna cut it, I gotta get the real deal so... Maybe someday!
I literally got this notification as soon as I finished watching it on Larry's channel XD
Damn that Larry boy... keeps stealing my videos @(
I still like playing Wild Gunman.
"Emphasis on the "Gun""
Oh GOD
Play in the Cafe 80s for the authentic experience.
you should do history of Gumshoe ...hard as hell ...but fun and addicting lol
To people that have seen the video and we not subbed plz sub slopes is a dam good creator and has hours of entertainment
+Dr. Pest you are too kind my good man :) analytics show that close to 60% of watchers are not subbed
How am I supposed to get any work done today when EVERYONE I love is publishing videos today!?
+Project Black Studios our bads :D
Can you do a Complete History Video of Contra ????
That's a great suggestion. will take a while but I think I might start that script for december :D
I noticed LucasArt's Outlaws' soundtrack aroung 10m.
That's one nice game to get its own Complete History sometime!
+Luis Henrique F. C. de Mello i love it when people know the music i put in these vids
No one has explained how Marty Mcfly shoots 4 gunman in the same scene never seen that in the nes version
You mean you have to use your hands? Dammit, someone beat me to it. Love the video bro
+Toploaded Gaming cheers bud :D
Wild arms music ❤
Instead of repeatedly saying that there wasn't much to the game he could have explained that it was a light gun game. And saying that you need the original cartridge because the gun only works on CRT TVs doesn't make any sense.
It's Hiiiigh Noon.
You just became my favorite human
Funny how it took you this long to do a complete history on a Nintendo game when the Duck Hunt Dog is in your intro.
hahahaha, you got me
As a kid I lost many quarters to Mad Dog McCree
Can you please adjust your Mic - it's too loud and you need to use a Pop Filter. Cheers
wonder how I played it in getaway arcade then if it wasn't distributed in 1985...
DO TIMESPLITTERS NEXT!!!
Marty McFly's favourite game
+Brian Sergeant yes... so he claims!
Fucking Wild Arms! God, that was a great RPG!
+FigureFour13 this guys got good tasye
Learning about fascination was the most unexpected thing. Ero pervy Nintendo.
So Nintendo created maybe the first ever FMV game? Interesting...
Could you do a Pikmin Complete History?
+MarioSonic04 its one of my all time fav franchises. So yes. I am sure i will eventually
Wild arms music!
I admit I was hoping for a namecheck for Craig Baldwin's experimental short film collage Wild Gunman, which included footage from the original arcade cabinet mixed up with things like industrial promotional films and scientific recordings of experiments on cats as a critique of American capitalism. Still, very cool video
Thanks for this daddy
+Premium Garbage your welcome darling
Can you look at Angry Birds🐦🐤🐓🐧🕊🦃🐖
Always too simplistic for me. There's a game called Gunman's Proof that I like much better.
Sonic Mayyynyoh (y)
ps - Love hearing proper English accents on YT
What's the name of the song in the beginning of the video?
