The best advice I've heard about watercolours is to treat them as your creative partner and collaborator instead of obidient servant.

Louise, you are by far and away the best watercolor instructor. I know there are times when you have self doubts, but believe me, that’s an inspiration for those of us (meaning ALL of us) who feel the same way. I follow a number of watercolor artists, and they are very talented (you are, too), but they aren’t great teachers. They aren’t cohesive, and it can be hard to follow their tutorials. They don’t break things down the way you do, and I often find myself really frustrated. I’ve been seriously following you since March, and even though I’m very critical of my efforts, I’m also very proud of my progress. I share a number of my paintings with my friends on FB, and I always make sure to say that they are from a tutorial by you. People are so enthusiastic, and complimentary. I’ve also put a few on Discord, where you have lots of really talented students.
Sometimes I feel overwhelmed, and wonder if this is too much for me. Then you post something like this, and it gives me such a boost. Thank you so much!!! ❤️

You are an ocean of knowledge. At 66 years, watercolour paintings inspired me.
Started learning at nearby art class studio, just a month ago. (Been an Adobe Illustrator user to graphic designer past 15years) lost my touch in manual artistic expression works. You added a new stroke of soul traveling in old age. Though living far far away, we are learning from, it saves us a great deal of money spent for the basics and strenuous activity learning time, your beautiful watercolour paintings.
May God Bless You, mam, with more kindness.

You are so correct on first using other mediums! Started with acrylics (dark to light and can re-cover) & then doing watercolor & ty as can’t “control” water but try and work with it is my challenges (just a few) but your videos help!
Also so far can’t just know at beginning where each tonal value should go (curled leaves & petals) never sure & sun direction makes big difference. So must do it in light glazes or get to dark to fast. Ty!!

Ilysm! Your message in this is very inspiring. I think the area I need most to work on is patience. I'm actually very patient in most other areas of my life, but with watercolor, I get so caught up in wanting to apply the details that layering washes and waiting for dry times starts to frustrate me! I end up overworking areas.

I’m going to make single swatch cards (1”x 2” tall) divided in half by a single black line (waterproof ink), my plan is to apply a single swatch of whatever color I want to check, wet on wet (or wet on dry even). Let the color dry completely then apply fresh wet paint of that color (and form: wet on wet/wet on dry) and take a picture immediately so I have a record of the wet color and dry color in picture form for reference. 👍🏻

Thank you so much for all your advice! I have a few questions…
How many layers would you consider to be too many before the painting is judged as overworked?
I started doing paintings of my own and I struggle with: 1-trying to get the desired values while not overworking the painting
2-choosing colors, trying to focus on getting only a minimal number of colors and mixing them to get more colors
I have sooooo many more questions! But these are the ones I struggled with in my last painting.
Thanks for all you do!!! 💐
