I think Autumn de Wilde is a genius and I wish she'd tackle envisioning the rest of Austen's canon. She put a brilliant team together and yes, the music is so in sync with the story that's almost a throwback to the time of Alfred Newman and E.W. Korngold. I love that Emma. begins with the character opening her eyes, not needing to see what she doesn't want to see. And ends with the character closing her eyes, ready to be surprised by what she does not yet know. That LOVE conquers all......
NO ONE in the comments are gonna say it so I'll say it, *the costumes are so well done*. To be more specific, the movie/novel takes place in 1815, a regency year. Not only the costumes, but the jewelry, too. And the hair and makeup is SO good. It's a slap in the face of movie producers who think you have to appeal to modern beauty trends to make a visually exciting film. One of the interviews I watched had the director talking about the rabbit hole of historical accuracy she went down, thinking about what kind of sheep could realistically be in the background of the shots. It's so extra but I love it so much.
Haven’t even watched the video but SO glad you made it. I feel like it captures Jane Austen’s realism-meets-satire absolutely perfectly. The music (including the folk), the costume, the colour grading, casting… everything. The script too! Ah man, my husband and I have watched it at least thirty times. I feel like it’s the kind of film that will age pretty well too.
I love the vocal music because it is reminiscent of English folksong and there's even a Christmas hymn in there at one point. It adds to the small-town and folksy feeling of the village and its people, and also roots the story in a very English tradition if that makes sense.
“MOTHER YOU MUST SAMPLE A TART!” Lol but in all seriousness I am so glad to have found a video that completely expresses how much I love this film! Literally 👏spot👏on👏
My favourite version of Emma...I've watched it at least 25 times. Every single scene has something magical and Johnny Flynn's portrayal of Mr. Knightley is a revelation. I don't worship at Jane Austen's altar (enjoy her books, but don't place her on a pedestal) so differences between the book and movie are often beneficial (such as the duet scene being between Mr. Knightley and Jane Fairfax rather than Mr. Churchill and Jane). I adore it!
I just saw this film for the first time in a couple of weeks and have already seen it 3 times. It feels utterly insane that it hasn't gotten the praize and acclaim it deserves. Not even one Oscar? Outrageous!
That’s exactly how I feel. The Oscars don’t celebrate or reward filmmaking, they just give those awards to the highest bidder. Film shouldn’t be about the lavish suits or dresses or even the awards. It’s about a few crackheads filming shit and hoping it will be good. It’s about sharing your work with others, just for the hell of it. Well anyway sorry for the rant, I’m so glad you watched the movie, and I hope you enjoyed my video! I hope you have a nice day and an even more wonderful life!
Not since "Amadeus" in 1983 have I watched a film repeatedly like "Emma.". This is , what I call, a complete film, in that, on all levels, it excels. The soundtrack is the perfect companion to the stunning cinematography, set, design, costume design, sound editing and, of course, an infectious cast that had me laughing from beginning to end. "Emma" is meant to be a satirical comedy and this is the first version who gets Austen's intentions. The other filmed versions of "Emma" are good and worthy, but this brilliant piece of cinema.
How did this not sweep the Oscars?? I couldn’t agree more, EMMA. is perfection. It is impeccably cast- the astonishing Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn!! Be still my heart. Mia Goth, Bill Nighy. And as you say the score is ****ing amazing. Astonishing work by Isobel Waller-Bridge. All honor and glory to first time director Autumn de Wilde, her film is exquisite, delicious, nearly flawless- as Miss Bates says, “excellently contrived, nothing wanting!” The script by Eleanor Cattall. The production design, the costumes, the food…this EMMA IS a masterpiece. I want more!
Dude this might be the most well worded comment in this comment section right now… reading your comment was like walking through the clouds. But I’m glad you loved the movie!
It didn’t sweep any awards because it is not made by fashionably woke Hollywood insiders and is a totally white film, historically accurate in the terms set by the novel.
It's my 2nd favorite Emma .Emma 2009 With Romola Garai is my favorite. Have you seen pride and prejudice with Colin Firth? It's my Favorite Jane Austen film..
EMMA is my favorite Austen, and although I felt that the beautiful subplots of the novel were very vaguely touched in this adaptation (the Churchill/Fairfax story is hardly there!) I cannot but adore what Autumn De Wilde did here. This is unquestionably the most beautiful Regency film ever made. It is breathtaking frame by frame, and managed to make me swoon even though I know the story by heart. It's an EMMA designed for the Instagram generation, and it succeeds at every turn. The characters feel so lonely despite the richness and beauty of the world around them; a contrast that in my opinion is storytelling at its finest. Yes, this is one of my favorite movies ever.
Emma is a joy, pure joy. There’s a video on RUclips somewhere looking at the costumes in detail, showing in extreme close up that the buttonholes are hand-sewn, there was that much attention to detail. The whole team clearly loved and understood the novel, its authors’ intentions and its Regency Englishness. If I could live in the world as depicted by one film, it would be this one.
Thanks for clarifying why I love Emma 2020 so much! Every frame is perfection. I rented it and watched it twice. Then bought it and have watched in another 5 times at least.
I just watched it, it's such a brilliant film. From the outfits and styling, the colour palettes, the cinematography and sets, the redemption and learning arc, the funny, the sad and the loving stories of the characters. Ugh its so good ❤
I love period movies so I saw this as soon as available for streaming (I know, but I have an amazing A/V setup). I was taken back by how stunning this movie is. I watched it again soon after and I was more entertained of all the details that I missed the first time. It is truly a piece of high quality art. Every frame is indeed a masterpiece as you say.
I really appreciated how the music kept driving home the class of MOST of Highbury by going back to working and traditional songs as soon as we look outside at Highbury. It's like the music is reminding us that we're only seeing a tiny specific group of them, and the larger group isn't like that.
Have watched Emma. over and over and over again since it came out in 2020. Watched it again just yesterday and discovered even more exquisite gems, the latest being the scene after the picnic where Emma’s by the window. Her father, played so divinely by Bill Nighy, slowly walks in and bears witness to his baby girl ‘s misery. Bill Nighy’s performance in this one scene alone goes beyond words, even as he himself says not a single word. Watch his facial expressions, how they evolve as Emma describes her behavior; he speaks so eloquently just with his face, his body language, his small hand movements…and finally his decision to just keep Emma company. So full of empathy even in his apparent helplessness to do anything. Exquisite. One of the best scenes ever filmed.
Totally agree with this review. Emma 2020 is definitely the best adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma. I have been watching this movie for over than 20 times 😂
This is my favourite movie ever, not one hair out of place is exactly how I'd describe it. The emotional readings of the characters are just... god I do not have words for how good this movie is.
I absolutely adore this movie. The follies and foibles of the characters are so beautiful and filled with shades of fantasy and realism. I agree with the music. I listen to the soundtrack on loop. This movie is just EPIC. arrrrrrrgh. goes to watch it again
I loved this movie too and I think it's a perfect little gem. But I am also one of those people who were just unable to read any of Austen's books, including Emma (except for Pride and Prejudice).
I agree 100% I watched it only last christmas in the airport, waiting for my flight. A Delightful treat I daresay. Out of all Emma's there, this one touched me like anything. Great cast, lovely, talented young actors who delivered fresh, spirited Austen's characters. Thanks.
Emma recently available on Netflix Malaysia and only then I was able to watch it and I've been rewatching it much. I love how perfectly perfect this movie is
Its my 2nd favorite. My favorite is the 2009 version with Romola Garai. I love it's 4 hour length plus I prefer Garai. The 2020 has the best Soundtrack.
I cannot agree more! It is such a brilliant movie. It has also let me discover Johny Flynn, who plays Mr. Knightley - please anyone check him out :) Thanks for the review
Love this video! I agree with everything you stated! This movie has touched me in so many ways no doubt my favorite movie of all time! And yes the scene where Emma and Mr Knightly are dancing is so special because it contains no dialoge so simple while being so impactful! Really this scene transforms their entire relationship! Leaves me in tears! By far the most magical movie! And yes the soundtrack is impeccable! You are right I cannot find one flaw in this film! Thank you for making this
I was one of those soooo fully prepared to dislike this movie because the earlier versions were so good….but I just recently told myself to just give it a chance and watch. To say that I loved it doesn’t even come close. It s now on my “comfort movie” playlist. I cannot believe just how brilliantly directed it is - you just want to freeze frame and appreciate almost every shot. The acting is sublime both by the main characters as well as all the deliciously humorous supporting characters. Oh and ….. Bill Nighy is just a treasure in this movie, at times without even saying a single word!!! Just a brilliant movie❤
This is the movie that got me into Emma. My mum has always said Emma is her least favourite Jane Austen (she’s a HUGE fan, she has a Persuasion quote tattooed on her back) so when we went to see it I didn’t expect much. But I have to say, it really is a masterpiece.
I agree with you, this movie is a masterpiece. I'm crazy it after finished watching it last week on Netflix. I watch it over and over again and try to sing the song "Drink to me only with thine eyes" 555
THANK YOU! This movie made ME, an avid Austen fan that hated Emma (the book) love the story! I was so skeptical since I didn't like the book... but I was giving a masterpiece!
I was the same way. I was very skeptical about it since I don’t really like melodramatic stories, but this movie was different. It wasn’t melodramatic, it’s so down to earth. It was about two people growing and maturing. It was about two people falling in love. It felt very “human” and i loved it.
Idk how many times I've watched this movie. Emma is probably my favorite Jane Austen book. One of my favorite teachers ever led our reading and analysis of the book so my love stems from that.
One of my favourite thing about the movie is the little easter egg of Emma's necklace. It is a little cross made from oval topaz and is a replica of te one Jane Austen wore herself. You can see it at the Jane Austen's House! I discorvered it a few weeks ago since I had an assignment about the movie
I love this movie. My only complaint is Mrs Bates. In the movie I don't think she says a word. In the book the banter back and forth between Mrs Bates and Miss Bates is hilarious. I suppose there wasn't time so it was edited out. Such a shame. Some of my favorite parts take place in the haberdashery. OMG I would love to be able to shop in a store like that one.
Austen uses Miss Bates to let the reader know what's going on in Highbury...not sure I recall much from her mother in the book though...and 'banter'!? Are you sure?
This movie made me an Austen fan, not the other way around. I’ve never really had a “favorite” film, now I do. Prior to this, my taste skewed mostly to horror. But Autumn De Wilde’s Emma changed all of that-because it’s perfect.
Very nice review. Caused me to watch the film. Very nice film indeed, I agree with your analysis in your review. The music is wonderfully done, but that is just one aspect of it. You gained a subscriber, sir.

Amazing video! Could you tell me the name of the song that starts playing around 6:45? I know that I’ve heard it before but can’t remember in which movie! Thank you 😊
The 3rd music I used is called “Harriet Smith and Robert Martin meet in the rain” it’s from this movie’s soundtrack. Also I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
Just wanted to let you know that Anya Taylor-Joy's name is actually pronounced (Anne-ya) not (Ahn-ya). I always hear people mispronouncing it (which is fair, she hasn't addressed it in a major interview) and I don't want her to end up like Saoirse Ronan having to tell people how to say her name in every single public appearance. This is such a good analysis, I adore this movie as well. It definitely would've been so much more successful if it wasn't for Covid
I really love movie also. I watched it over and over again on HBO GO. Also, the trailer is very good too (ruclips.net/video/qsOwj0PR5Sk/видео.html). Perfection yes.

It definitely is my favorite Emma movie version. So gorgeous just to look at and few Austen movies make me laugh out loud.
YUHHHHHH!!!!
Just watched it! Totally agree, beautiful movie!
I adore this movie! It really captures how funny Jane Austen is
I laughed WAY to hard while watching this masterpiece
This is my favourite Emma too.
YESSSSSSS!!!!!!!
Why your mum is a masterpieces

Let's also praise the original source material by Jane Austen.
I love that pinkish room. It looks like fondant icing, 😁
😂😂
Emma is the first Jane Austen I read and I am so glad I waited to watch this film until after I read it. I really love this movie!
I love the movie too! It’s so fucking good!
I just fell in love with this movie. Amazing in every way!
Thank you for writing a love letter to my favorite movie
No problem! It was very easy to show my love for this film!
I didn't even know I NEEDED this video....and yesss I LOVE this movie..I'm possibly addicted to this movie..God the music alone is glorious 💖😌👌
THE MUSIC IS GLORIOUS!!!!!!
@@scottandgabeproductions you're glorious 🥺🥰
Idk how many times I've watched this movie. Emma is probably my favorite Jane Austen book. One of my favorite teachers ever led our reading and analysis of the book so my love stems from that.
Dude FR. This movie helped me through tough times😂😂😂
One of my favourite thing about the movie is the little easter egg of Emma's necklace. It is a little cross made from oval topaz and is a replica of te one Jane Austen wore herself. You can see it at the Jane Austen's House! I discorvered it a few weeks ago since I had an assignment about the movie
HOLY SHIT THATS SO COOL!!!
I enjoyed this film more than the novel! Which is rare for me but I think it had to due to my lack of knowledge of it’s time
Me too!
I suppose the Woodhouse home is splendid in every adaptation, but really stood out in this one.
HECK YEA
I love this movie. My only complaint is Mrs Bates. In the movie I don't think she says a word. In the book the banter back and forth between Mrs Bates and Miss Bates is hilarious. I suppose there wasn't time so it was edited out. Such a shame. Some of my favorite parts take place in the haberdashery. OMG I would love to be able to shop in a store like that one.
Austen uses Miss Bates to let the reader know what's going on in Highbury...not sure I recall much from her mother in the book though...and 'banter'!? Are you sure?
Have seen this soooo many times!
Absolutely agree!
I’m so glad you love this movie too!
One of my favourite films Perfect! I agree with you.
I just love this movie
Same.....
I want her to do my movie
I needed this so much thx.😂❤!!!
No prob
This movie made me an Austen fan, not the other way around. I’ve never really had a “favorite” film, now I do. Prior to this, my taste skewed mostly to horror. But Autumn De Wilde’s Emma changed all of that-because it’s perfect.
FOR REALLLLLL
I never saw a movie based on a Jane Austin novel but this looks fantastic and what a great video this is
Thanks!!!!
I love this movie so much. It's my second favorite movie ever, after Cinderella 2015.
This movie made me so happy too! But you know, Cinderella (2015) is low-key underrated.
@@scottandgabeproductions it definitely is underrated.
I was going to watch this film in the cinema...and the Covid; so I suppose I shall never get the opportunity.
Welcome to the club.........
Definitely regret that as well!
So wonderful!
I could not agree with you more! This movie was so deliciously beautiful. I was wondering what is your other Jane Austen favorites?
I’m a movie guy so EMMA (2020) is really the only movie out of the Jane Austen Catalog that I truly love. But Pride and Prejudice is not a bad watch…
One of the only good things to come out of 2020
FR
I love this movie so much
Very nice review. Caused me to watch the film. Very nice film indeed, I agree with your analysis in your review. The music is wonderfully done, but that is just one aspect of it. You gained a subscriber, sir.
Thanks!!!
Yah I love Emma the story, the picturesque..
139) Pride and Prejudice (2005)
146) Emma (2020)
Not one of my favorite movies of all time, but very, very good. All the Emma's before were so useless and Emma was even under Sense and Sensibility, until this version came out and suddenly the movies are now in the same order as the books by Jane Austen for me.
You did a good review. I don't think the vulgarity was necessary, but good thoughts.

The City of Lost Children [1995] (French with English subtitles)
@@8Biit, I believe I watched it and wasn't impressed. Could you give me the reason you love it. Spoil it so to speak so I can see why you like it. You can't ruin a good movie.

Almost in the top 50 best movies of all time.

I really liked the video. One little suggestion tho, I think you should feature the film in the thumnail next time if you make a review. I clicked and realized it was the latest movie we were discussing. Except that tho, the video is really nice. I enjoyed it.
Thanks for the feedback!
But he put the year in the title...

Amazing video! Could you tell me the name of the song that starts playing around 6:45? I know that I’ve heard it before but can’t remember in which movie! Thank you 😊
“Mia & Sebastian’s Theme” from the movie “La La Land”
I love everything of this movie. It's fantastic!!!
ITS SOOOOOO GOOD
Loved this video
THANKS!!!
I do love this movie. Did you use the Zelda theme towards the end? Beautiful.
Yes sirrrrrr I did😂😂😂😂😂
This feeds my soul so much 😭 btw whats the name of the third music you used?
The 3rd music I used is called “Harriet Smith and Robert Martin meet in the rain” it’s from this movie’s soundtrack. Also I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
@@scottandgabeproductions Oh sorry! I meant the one in 5:33 , sounded like something from La La land
Autumn de Wilde did a great job.
Thank you!
I love this review!!!
Thanks!!!!
Thank youuuuuu!
No problemmmmmm

Yes the trailer is amazing!!
It's also very laugh out loud funny.
YES IT IS!!!!
I always have trouble getting past the gratuitous butt shot.
I wish Jane Austen time travel and see her imagination turn to life..a beautiful and young life she wants to live
Lol. At the beginning you say spoiler so we should turn back now.
But in the video you say you're going to convince us to watch this movie.
😂
My bad......
@@scottandgabeproductions It's a good movie. I've already watched and rewatch Ed it before watching this video so you don't need to convince me to watch it.

It's good, but not the best Emma!
The movie is absolute piece of art, but…. When it comes to character herself - Emma, they didn’t get it. No no no.
I get that. She is hard to like sometimes, but by the end she is very lovable and sweet.
Great movie--because it's the perfect book. Not the perfect movie because really you could never capture this book in less than 10 hours!
The 2009 Emma is Four hours Which is perfect for me
