Excellent, after 30-60 seconds of messing with my B&W post is counter productive for me. Your simple yet effective processing gets me where I want to be quickly! Thank you very much Gareth!!
Really excellent video Gareth. Cracking photos. Makes me laugh how some people want to lift shadows and drop highlights all the time, doesn't seem to occur to them they're actually reducing the dynamic range within their photos, and shadows really do exist in real life! Hope you're doing ok with the lockdown? Picking up lots of little PS tips from watching you work, thanks mate much appreciated. cheers, tony
Loves this video! Could you go into a little more detail about that white border script in a video. That looks cool!! Also what do you have selected to apply an edit to all images selected at the same time in LR, like when you applied the vignette?
Interesting video mate. We edit in a very similar way. But I didn't know there was an alignment tool lightroom. I will be giving that a look. Hope you are well mate. Looking forward to getting back out on the street with you again
Thanks Gareth, I found it really useful indeed & it’s reassuring to hear you say “don’t spend too long editing” because sometimes I get caught in a trap of thinking I don’t spend long enough if I’m editing in less than 2 minutes!
Terrific video Gareth. A lot of great tips. I have always just defaulted to dropping the photo into Silver Effects Pro but will definitely give your method a try.
Hi thanks for the comment. I think I preferred the single person in the frame. It’s normally better to have one or three people in a frame. I don’t like just two. Imo
@@GarethDanks Oh the infamous rule of 3. Ok. Makes sense. In that case I would have kept the lady on the stairs, She is moving and implying direction. But, that is just me ;)
Hi Gareth you might like to try using the saturation sliders in the Calibration section of LR, they give you greater selective control compared to the Temp slider. Your editing technique is very quick to obtain your distinctive look. Another 👍🏻s from me.
Get your hair cut !!!!!! Only kidding. Just got into B&W in the past 12 months and even more since I got the x100v. Great vlog and tips. thanks and stay safe
Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it. Very informative and thought provoking, thanks for posting. A bit off-subject I know but could I ask what laptop you're using as I am looking to up-date and want one that will happily run lightroom/photos hop etc. Thanks one again!
Thanks Martin? appreciate the feedback glad you enjoyed it. My laptop is a MacBook Pro 2015 retina with 16 gig of ram. I need a new one but can’t use the newer models due to the stupidity of removing the SD and USB ports. I’ll have to buy another 2015 or 2016 if it’s the same. Thanks mate
Excellent, agree 100% with your thoughts and process routine.... I also use Nik Efex Silver B&W for more detailed edts but like you say for a fast 1 min edit in LR brilliant. Also agree that B&W should be high contrast with deep shadows... Excellent :-)
Hey andy. Good question mate. Reason is when you edit and adjust contrast it changes the balance on the image. So until you’ve got a basic edit you can’t really see how it’s going to look. Tones and shape might appear after edit that you’ve cropped off. If that makes sense. 👍🏻😊
Nice clear tutorial, although I don't use lightroom I do do something you did at 14.25 in PS. I go to Adjust Hue/Saturation, desaturate all six colours individually down to -100 and then move the lightness slider up and down for each colour (its like working in channels but simpler and with more control) to suit your mood. Been doing this for a couple of years now and haven't found a simpler method of fine controlling tone in b&w. Hope you're keeping well and the government are being kind to you in this crisis.
Just PS, never really seen the need to have both a horse and a bullock to pull the cart. I'd probably invest in capture if I was running a studio, just for ease of tethering. I also tend to use 'Virtual Photographer' from Optiverve Labs (free plug in to PS) for some quick layer adjustments, plus you can design your own adjustments and save them. I'm not really a multiple layer editor (I can't be arsed naming them). I always look for the most versatile easiest shortcut to regular edit requirements. A lot of what's on You Tube are overly complicated ways to get to the same place...too many masks is the usual. Try the desaturate each colour and lightness slider method, quick and effective for bringing out what you want the viewer to see with b&w's without the need to dodge and burn most of the time :-)
Hey thanks mate. I look forward to your comments. Lightroom is far far faster for editing multiple images in one go. Else I’d just use ps if it was a single image I wanted to edit. As in the video I can edit multiple images in one go. I need to try capture tho. Better for fujifilm files. 👍🏻😊
Hi Dennis thanks for your comment. Yes you’re right I didn’t mean to I completely forgot really sorry. I think I would’ve use the pen again and use the patch tool to clone information over. Would’ve definitely had to use the history brush and duplicate the background layer though. I think it will be okay because it was dark area. Thanks for the comment mate appreciate you watching
Fantastic video for black and white editing! I picked up lots of tips, and thanks Gareth!
Excellent, after 30-60 seconds of messing with my B&W post is counter productive for me. Your simple yet effective processing gets me where I want to be quickly! Thank you very much Gareth!!
Never thought (or seen!) using the temperature slider to adjust the exposure. Will definitely give that a bash next time! Thanks!
Great video! I remember those 4 pics from your previous videos. Nice to see your edits.
nice to see how you process the street... i still need to get out and do some light and shade street... i do like your eye on street..
Thank you paul. Hope we get out again soon. I’m going mad
Great video Gareth, I'll be revisiting some of my B&W images and try not to use highlights and shadows sliders.
Cheers mate. Makes a huge difference 👍🏻😊
Great video! thank you Gareth
Great video, thanks and hello from Kenya!
I find myself being more attracted to monochrome images. That curved stairwell is a great shot.
Great video tutorial Gareth 👌🏻. Learned a lot on the approach to edit b&w photos
Hey man thanks so much that’s great to hear 😊
Just discovered your page on RUclips. I have instantly become a huge fan. I’ll be going through your videos. Cheers
Hey man thanks so much. I appreciate that. Hope you enjoy them 😊
Brilliant explanation and I’ve learnt loads there. Thanks very much 👏👍
Glad you enjoyed it! thanks for the comment Craig :-)
Nice workflow Gareth
Nice one mate, really enjoyed this, really helpful. That first shot is 🔥.

Brilliant video. Thanks 👍🏻
Cheers David 👍🏻😊
Excellent and very helpful. I’ve learnt quite a bit from this and have realised a few errors I’ve been making with my editing. Thank you.
Great to hear! thanks for watching mate!

I second that re the white border script /action, would be cool to know Gareth.

thanks for the great vid Gareth I need all the help I can get with editing
Cheers Gareth that was interesting. Today's project now in place. Stay safe 🌈
Hi! Please enlighten me on why you brushed out the lady coming down the stairs.

Top vlog Gareth

Cracking video Gareth some very useful tips, one thing for me is keep away from highlight and shadow sliders.
100% mate. Wrecks an image
Very interesting, thank you Gareth 👍
Hey nigel. Cheers mate.
Great video, love the curved staircase one.
Great video
✌🏻🇧🇷
Great video Gareth, good pics although I thought the one with the lady sitting on the steps looked much better in colour with the splash of red.
Cheers Dennis.. i agree 100% but this was a BW editing vid haha
This is first class. I don't use Lightroom but I am going to buy Affinity as it's on offer. The principles were really useful.
Many thanks.
Hey thanks paul mate. That’s nice of you. Principles will def be the same. Need to try that software.
learnt a lot from the Video Thanks for sharing
My pleasure thanks for watching 👍🏻😊
Thanks for this nice process. Just to Ask : where IS the exact place of the second one ? I trying to find it ? Please 🙏

@@GarethDanks thanks for that, I hadn't realised they'd done that!!!???
Thanks for the quick reply, stay safe and keep up the good work
Yup. Silly apples haha
Thank you Gareth! Why you don't make a video showing us how to add the white frame to our pictures. Thank you again. Monterrey Mx. Stay Safe!

Hi, Gareth, enjoyed that. Any reason why you don't crop the photographs before you edit? Cheers.

Great tips. Do you intentionally underexpose for B&W photos?

i was waiting to see how you got rid of the mobile phone in the statue image, it seemed a bit tricky and i was wondering how you would deal with it.

So does using the temperature slider instead of raising the exposure stop the introduction of more noise?
It does with bw images yes.
I really enjoyed that (except for the polo! JK), great content, thanks!
Hoping these things apply to Capture One and Affinity Photo as well.
Nice series of images. Will PM you later.
Nice video on Lightroom editing, but going to photoshop and removing elements of an image is off putting.
This is graphic design...not photography .
I value your opinion. Thanks for watching. Hope you enjoyed it still.
