Born in Ped, near Sangli district in Maharashtra, Ashok Kade had a humble beginning. He was bright student in school. His father was a cobbler and his Dalit background acted as a stumbling block in his education. After finishing high school, he went to Mumbai to live with his uncle. Though he wanted to pursue a career in medicine, lack of funds made him opt for mechanical engineering. He worked as Mazgaon docks from 1975 to 1992, and built a network of excellent contacts alongwith his brothers Datta and Suresh. After the demise of his uncle and increasing family responsibilities, DAS Offshore - named after the initial of the three brothers was established in 1995. Their first project came from their ex-employer Mazgaon Dock. Now DAS is the biggest employer among dalit-owned companies - with 4,500 employees - and is credited with building Mumbai's first skywalk at Bandra. The company specializes in doing fabrication work on offshore platforms for energy and infrastructure companies. Having grown from social odds, one might think he would later go on to favour the Dalits, but that is not the case. He is said to be a believer of merit, and rejects the idea of giving more weightage to aspiring employees from his caste. A self-made man
