    My dad is from Guanaja! We have family on Roatan as well. My dad's side is Bay Islander/ Cayman Islander! So I am half a mix of those. People always ask me what I am and then have no idea where the Bay Islands are or what the culture is like. Also they always ask why my dad is from Honduras but I don't have a Spanish last name lol. I wish more people knew about the culture.

      Honduras isn't that well known in the United States of America but a lot of times when Hondurans speak Spanish they get confused for being Colombians from the Caribbean region and or Venezuelans and if English speaking Hondurans come to America then they get confused for being Jamaican which only the people who know the Honduran accent well enough can identify our accent.

    • @TurtleFL
      @TurtleFL 6 месяцев назад

      Same way with my mom's family - She was an Osgood in the Kirkconnell lines, born in La Ceiba and lived in Guanaja (Bonacca, they called it then.)
      Really good food there, my aunt still makes catamales with the banana leaf wrappings. :->

Jamaicans, antiguans, Montserratians, st kitts and st Vincent people have the same standard creole dialect like these people speak like us they also sing with their twan in their accent. These people on the coast of Honduras and Belize and panama originally came from Jamaica way back in the Atlantic slave trade when the disobedient prisoners of war were being shipped off to different parts of America and the Caribbean. Why is it that despite being the same country, these islands off the coast are much more like Jamaica in that it's mostly black people who speak English while the mainland of Honduras is very similar to the rest of Central America where it's predominantly Mestizo and all Spanish speakers?

    • @HappyHarryGreen
      @HappyHarryGreen  3 года назад +1

      Great question. It has to do with the fact that the bay islands were formerly controlled by the British. So the local island population is very similar to other Caribbean islands. The bay Islands of Honduras are located in the West Caribbean. I hope that helps.

    • @lucasrichards7247
      @lucasrichards7247 3 года назад +2

      @@HappyHarryGreen So now my question is how does being colonized by the British or Spanish create such a difference in racial makeup? It makes sense why they speak two different languages, but not why the racial makeup is so different.

    • @HappyHarryGreen
      @HappyHarryGreen  3 года назад +2

      What racial difference do you speak of? I’m not sure I understand the question. In the bay islands(Roatan Utila Guanaja) we have people of African descent(from slaves that were brought to the Caribbean) we have Spanish people (aka Indios from the mainland) we have white islanders (people of British Irish and Scottish descent who’s ancestors where former pirates and buccaneers) and ex pats from the USA Canada Italy Czech Republic and Isreal and others. I hope this helps in answering your question.

    • @HappyHarryGreen
      @HappyHarryGreen  3 года назад

      The way it occurred is the British brought slaves to the bay islands, the mainlanders came over looking for jobs, the pirates stayed and the ex pats arrived for various reasons. You will see beautiful warm climates and islands tend to attract people.

    I understood more than I thought I would... I have relatives from Guanaja (including my late mom.) But now when I listened to them, I also heard some of what I thought before was a Catonsville, Maryland accent, which actually was my cousins whose parents and grandparents were also Bonaccan. It's those really dark vowels and the thick r. Bet if you asked your friends there "Wonna ply cords," just like that, they'd ask if it were poker or something.

    • @N9mber
      @N9mber 6 месяцев назад

      That’s the Caymanian accent. Many settled the islands in its early years. The Caymanian accent is a mix of English accents particularly from the west country. Cornish is the birthplace of many Anglo-Caribbean accents.
