True. I bought i7 4.2gjz 2017 imac 27 inch 5k screen, 40gb RAM and 2tb sata ssd with apple keyboard and mouse. Paid £300....

I got one of these in 2017. But did get it with a 512Gb SSD and fitted the 16gb Ram upgrade to 24. Has worked brilliantly for the last near 5 years. Although it meets my needs. I am be tempted by a 27inch M1 iMac if one comes out this spring/summer.

It's fine. I've got a late 15' maxed out i5. Daily driver for my design business. I've got my eyes on an M1 iMac Pro when it comes out, but this machine is still more than serviceable. Even my 2008 iMac that I use for various tasks works like it did when it came out of the box. They're bulletproof.

The older macs really do last forever! I am really excited about the new M1 iMac too! I just hope it has some upgradability with the RAM but I doubt that's possible given the way the M1 is designed

@@AldoJames Personally, I think that what you get in the box is what you'll be stuck with forever after. The SOC is just that - all of the system resources on a single chip. What will be interesting to see is how expandability on the Mac Pro will be handled, but that's for another day.

I bought the iMac 27 2017 base model brand new since they released. The price was high and no knowledge of macOS, but I was impressed by its monitor and the design and I purchased that machine. Now I use it at work as a normal computer, and use it for watching some media.
The worst thing is that it doesn’t support Dolby Atmos and Apple had stop selling the 27 iMac so I cannot consider upgrade the machine. The 24 inches iMac M1 version’s speakers seems less impressive than the 27 inches.

Installing macOS onto external (USB-C) SSD is rather easy, I just did that because my 2nd hand iMac 2017 only had a 1TB fusion drive (which is 1TB of slow HDD combined with 32GB of SSD). But installing Windows to ext. SSD isn't easy (due to limitations in BootCamp and also in Windows Installer). Guess Linux should be also rather easy to install to ext. SSD.

Internal SSD is important, especially if you want to install Windows also (with or without using bootcamp), because bootcamp only supports internal SSD and windows installer also does not like to be used on external SSDs.

hello, i am o user of an imac 2011 i5 21.5". it is time to move on (so sad to let it go, it has been a precious companion for my work-photography& graphic design). I am in a dilemma ( ΔΙΛΗΜΜΑ in Greek) to purchase a 2019 27" i5 used, or turn to a new imac 24" Due to lack of space i do not want to turn to a separate mini mac or mac studio + screen, cables etc. Plus the fact of getting a new imac and after a year to be outdated from a new one with a new chip( M2 or whatever). If it can ;ast at least 5 years i would be fine with the 27" and wait for apple to calm down on changing everything so soon.....what is your opinion?

No it just means you won't get anymore security updates so it would be more vulnerable to newer threats

i have 24 Gb RAM but i do only my video editing for my videos for imovie what if i max my ram to 64 but kept the hard drive would not that be enough.

    • @AldoJames

I don’t think 64gb would make much more of a difference for iMovie

Hey mate, i’ve been editing 4k 10bit footage on a normal desktop with i5 6th gen and 16gb ram (no vram)
i’m looking to get an imac i7 7th gen with 16gb ram and 8gb vram
Right now doing a lot of work in premiere (layers, hundreds of clips, bunch of sounds) my pc can’t really handle much anymore, im worried if i get the new imac there won’t be much of a difference, any thoughts? cheers
ps, i use proxies all the time

    • @AldoJames

That is a MASSIVE jump IMO you should notice a huge difference IMO with that dedicated VRAM

What do you mean by it didn't age well? I'm replying to you now from the iMac and still think it was a great purchase. It's booting from the external SSD, screen looks great and handles everything I throw at it :D

Sorry. Was switching between videos and had a total brain slip. Although I believe that Ventura is the last OS it will support. Thanks so much for your video, it was by far the most helpful on these older iMacs I’ve seen!

I upgraded to an internal 4 TB SSD myself and broke the screen. Definitely not as easy to upgrade the SSD as the videos online make it seem. The OWC kit I got on Amazon came with two suction cups and they are how I broke the display (when turned OFF the display does not look broken). If you are to attempt this upgrade yourself DO NOT GO NEAR THOSE SUCTION CUPS. Now it has a 3" black bar permanently down left-third of the screen. Hope I can get a new screen from a third party for a reasonable cost. And to think, this way my attempt TO SAVE MONEY. The shop wanted about €140 to do it, if only I could make my decision over again 😞

    • @AldoJames
      @AldoJames  Год назад

Oh man! that sounds really bad!!! I considered opening it up and installing and SSD but i decided against it as I was worried something like that might happen. I've been booting off an external SSD since I got it and it sped the system up so much. Hope you're able to get it fixed for a reasonable price

If one does not need Windows on the iMac nor the last bit of SSD transfer speed, going with an ext. USB-C SSD case for an M.2 NVME SSD is maybe the cheapest and least risky way to accelerate an iMac that only has a HDD or fusion drive internally. Besides breaking the screen, as it happened to you, I also heard about bad replacement sticky tape, so the screen just fell off some time after the iMac was put together again.

haha I live in Australia and it gets quite hot here too! I rarely hear the fan, the temps are usually quite low and you can always download 'mac fan controls' to increase or reduce the fan speed

This monitor foot is just not a banger😅 That is from 2017? Attention: The macOS system is running at 2.5k only!!! 5k is just marketing speech! MacOS can show 5k, but icons and everything is just too small, as 5k is not supported.
