Fun fact. Johnny Cash played his first concert at San Quentin in January 1958, and in the audience was a 20 year old convict named Merle Haggard, he took inspiration from seeing Cash, and later became a famous C/W singer in his own right.
The line in Merle's song "Momma Tried" that says, "I turned 21 in prison", was true. ; )

Johnny encouraged Merle to tell his story before someone found out and broke the news and Merle would have lost everything. Without computers etc, it took longer for the dirt to get told but eventually someone would have uncovered it.
There is only one nickname for Mr. Johnny Cash, "The Man In Black". Period.
This was done at San Quentin prison Somewhere in that crowd was a 21 year old convict that got out of prison and became one of the best country music singers a man by the name of Merle Haggard

We named our pitbull Sue, after this song. It’s immediately disarming. A lot of people are scared of him at the sight, but he’s the sweetest.
For some reason, this version omits a few lines of lyrics:

The writer of this song wrote childrens books, drew cartoons for Playboy magazine, and had songs recorded by many artists. He wrote the lyrics to "Cover of the Rolling Stone" and a few other songs recorded by Dr Hook and the Medicine Show, hits for Loretta Lynn and others. His name is Shel Silverstein

He also wrote Sylvia's Mother and some other Dr. Hook songs. There is actually an interview with the real Sylvia's mother on youtube.

I was sitting at a bar in Phoenix listening to a couple of dudes next to me. The older guy told the the other that he and his teenage son almost got in a fist fight recently. He said he told his son "I may hurt tomorrow, but you're going to hurt today". With that his son backed down. It's funny what you hear in a bar if you just listen.
I'm 46 years old. When I was 7 years old, my grandpa put on a Johnny Cash cassette while grandpa and I got the fire pit going for the day and this song was the first one I ever heard from Johnny Cash. I immediately fell in love with Johnny Cash.

And the crazy thing is he’s singing to inmates at San Quinton prison!!! How many of them were killers? And the fighting that happened in that prison!

The humour in this is what gets me every time. One of my favourites from Johnny Cash.
Just remember that he was performing this song for a group of guys that were in hard time at San Quentin. You were usually in for 20 years or more and many of them had similar problems with absent fathers.
I worked with someone who had as a job in college they they worked at a hotel reception desk. This person told me that Johnny and June Cash (his wife) were super nice people and treated hotel staff very kindly.
Fun fact: Shel Silverstein, the author of the kids' books, Where the Sidewalk Ends, A Light in the Attic, and The Giving Tree, wrote this song for Cash and won a Grammy for it. If you've read his poems, you can definitely hear his style in it when listening to this song. Lol.

Those men in the audience were inmates behind bars. How many are guys with father issues? How many have sons back home that they can't be present for? How many had to deal with bullying or were the bullies? How many are in there because of the attitudes and fighting like Sue and his father?
Cash was one of my late father's favorites. He especially would always laugh with Cash at the end of this song.
We named our son, who's 21 now, Maxwell Martin Power.

"Alice's Restaurant " is an absolute must hear. I play it every Thanksgiving. As a young teen in the late 80s, I made friends with my neighbor, who was a Vietnam Vet. He introduced me to Woody & Arlo Guthrie, & I learned more about the war from that gentleman than I learned at school.
He also helped me understand what protests were. My upbringing was very structured & controlled. I'd always been told that protests were evil acts.
There's a verse missing. Before he says "I made me a vow..." It went "some gal would giggle and I'd turn red. Some guy would laugh and I'd bust his head," then he'd go into "but I made me a vow...)
This was written by shel Silverstein the author of children’s poetry “Falling Up” and “Where the Sidewalk Ends” in the 7s and 80s

I grew up playing with older kids, my brothers age as there were none my age in the neighborhood. I learned be tough really quick, and I am grateful for the experience. Hardship at the time, reward when its over.

The best fact about this track is ,,,,,, this is the only recording of Johnny singing "a boy named sue" he learned it a few hrs before the gig and never got round to re-recording it.. he actually only sang it a few times over his career...
That's why the band sounds lost at certain times. They never rehearsed it, other than Cash telling them the chord sequence, and everyone just ad-libbed as best they could.

The fact about him learning it a few hrs before the prison gig is true? and he never went into the recording studio to record it is true... so thank you for bringing that to my attention... I say odd because I'm not sure why my mom chose that Album.
Also I learned from watching an in-depth documentary about Tom Petty that as a totally famous person in his own right played as part of Johnny Cashes backup band while J. C. was touring (along with other members of THE HEART BREAKERS) just for fun. I viously he held J. C. in high esteem.
Tom Petty was also a pretty great story teller/songwriter. He wrote many many great hits! And besides all that I believe he was a really great real person.

I was horribly bullied in 9th grade mostly because I was short and smart. Over that summer I grew just under a foot and added 45lbs of muscle. So from 10th through 12th I roamed the halls between the classes hunting down bullies. I really wish the UFC had started earlier because I know I would have been in it.

In the 70's there were a few boys actually named Sue. I don't know the number of them, I just remember meeting one who was Native American and no, he was not from the Sioux.

If you ever find yourself in a position of never knowing if or when you will see your kids again. It's a very desperate moment of knowing you need to give something impactful that will stay with them and help them through. You never know unless you are ever in that position. Obviously, it's something no true parent ever wants to experience.
