Lights off in the cabin, especially at night is a recommended safety practice. In an emergency, seconds matter, and eyes adjusting to the dark wastes time when you need to evacuate quickly
I know that's the prevailing wisdom, and in theory it makes sense, but in real life has there ever really been an emergency situation where it actually made the slightest bit of difference?
Not that I am aware of, off the top of my head. But think of it this way--should there be an accident with fatalities to prove that it is true? It's a simple thing to do, and the chances of an accident are slim, but I'm not sure anyone wants to be on that flight where the theory is put to the test.
@@ChrisJones-ru9yx At least I hope to God the aviation authority had done a study on the effect of light off at take-off and landing. I mean, they are doing study atm at the impact of seat pitch and sizes on evacuating passengers in emergency situation.
In America, it’s a federal aviation regulation. You can be fined for not making sure the lights in the cabin match the outside conditions. And yes there have been multiple cases where evacuations have been stilted because people weren’t adjusted to outside light conditions. These regulations are put in place because they’ve learned from past accidents.
The Chinese aren't too fussed about personal safety regulations. Just look at their production facilities. No PPE, no physical guards whatsoever. If someone dies on the job: they are literally replaced within hours. I saw a video where a machine caught a man's clothes and pulled him in, literally whipping him around and around violently slamming him into the floor multiple times before someone finally cut the power. Then the video shows someone else working on that same machine hours later (after they removed the dead man's mangled body) while other workers were cleaning up the blood on the floor. Safety regulations in China are absolutely atrocious.
This is why I like enjoy and trust Simply Aviation, no ego`s, no sponsor's, just an honest reflection of a flight that they have paid for. My son and his wife come home to Scotland from Korea via Beijing and London with Air China, there were also not impressed. Thanks David for your honest opinion.
Do you blame them commenting about it? Yes it is obvious that it was before. China Air is no longer landing in the US as far as I was told but a neighbor who cancelled her flight to Japan on China Air. But the fare from New York to Tokyo was only $750 vs Air Canada at $900 and JAL/ ANA/ American/ United at $1,500!!!!
I have done a lot of travel in my life. I have flown in everything from Lufthansa's First Class on the 747-8i to the backseat of a student pilot's Cessna 172. My 4 segments in Air China Y are bar none the worst flights I have ever flown. Along with everything observed here, my experience included receiving a SINGLE ORANGE (yes, really) as a "kosher meal" and a 9 hour layover at PEK, approximately 5 hours of which I spent in a small room handcuffed to a table because I waited in the wrong line at immigration. I don't care how much cheaper the ticket is. I will never fly them again.
I flew with them on CDG-PEK route, A330, and it was a rather bad experience.... First thing was that electronic devices usage was prohibited on board. IFE was a bit broken (for some reason all the screens were boiling hot when we came into the cabin), even had a few mistakes in it (I didn’t know music flok was a thing....). Legroom wasn’t good , especially since I’m rather tall. The gap between the seat and the wall had obviously not been cleaned recently. The crew was very cold too, quite unfriendly. Food selection for dinner was chicken and pasta or fish and rice. I ordered the first one, but when I opened the meal I thought they gave me the wrong one at first glance... Taste was alright tho. However pizza for breakfast, never again.... Finally, landing was kinda rough. Unless they have an extremely cheap deal, I’ll avoid them!
Have you noticed, that David after a long time didn’t say „thanks for the lovely flight,” but only „thanks for the ride.” This had to be very uncomfortable and unsatisfying flight. But what you wouldn’t do for us, viewers! :-) Wish you a better luck next time choosing an airline.
3 years ago my family and I travelled to Shanghai onboard Air China's a330-300...we boarded the aircraft and there was no IFE for an 12 hour flight...Also in the night it got extremely cold and there were no blankets provided...
Nice trip report! This was a 2008-built plane? Wow, it looked as if it was about 30 years old. The IFE was old fashioned, and the seat was uncomfortable for this flight.
No the a330 is a decent plane. I flew it muc-wdh , per-syd, syd-chc . But the Air China one fra-ctu had an equally run down interior. And the food on air china is really bad.
I'm probably the only person in the world who's had a positive experience with Air China (food and all!), that being said I did fly on their 787's rather than the A330 - even I'd be pissed if I had to fly for 10 hours on those!
Wow... I flew AirChina several times between china and Germany, the Catering was far better. With a full meal after take off. Probably because the flight time is a little bit longer
As covid is now left behind I'm thrilled to be able to fly Air China again. I have to say they improved a lot. However, the ticket from Europe to Asia are around 400€ return, so somehow you have to adjust the expectations to the price. And therefor I think its a good deal. If you're not budget sensitive go ahead and book annother airline. You'll have much better experience with eg. Lufthansa, however you will pay at least 50% more. Pro tip: Avoid their a330 on long haul if possible. Their a350 product is very modern and the IFE is also competitive. The 777 is also quite comfy with air china. However you'll meet the same old IFE
Air China really need to upgrade the entire company to a new era, like new livery, new cabin hardware and better service of course, it’s such a waste for their fleet operating under this kind of service level! btw their A359 was actually great, waaaaay more better than these old configuration 332
I live in Tokyo since long time and I always fly Air China when possible to go find my family back in Europe...very cheap flights and no problem so far honestly! I love it hostesses give you free snacks too if you ask
You SHOULD be bothered with the crew not dimming the cabin lights on a night takeoff. If the takeoff is aborted and the plane has to be evacuated, having your eyes adjusted to darkness may mean the difference between life and death. Specifically some Chinese airlines don't dim the lights, but even if Chinese laws don't require it, international aviation regulations do, and Chinese airlines are not exempt from following them - even more so on a flight to Europe.
Thank you. It bothered me that David would imply he doesn't care for lights being dimmed. So he doesn't care for his safety? An aviation buff should know better. It should bother him immensely.
the tiny legroom reminds me of an Air Canada 777 long-haul flight a few years ago. It was the most uncomfortable flight ever !! Air Canada must have heard of a lot of complaints about it because the 777 legroom is much better now. Early last year, I flew a BA old 747 from YVR to LHR, IFE was so old that the picture was really bad. Now, BA uses A380 for the same flight !!! two thumbs up BA !!! For me, the most important things in any long-haul flights are legroom and the frequency of flight attendants serving water during the flight. I once flew Canada's WestJet from Gatwick to Calgary, water was only served 2 times during the entire 9.5 hour flight !!! not good at all !!!
I've been on this exact flight last spring and I have to fully agree with the result. Legroom is appalling, I had exactly one way how to fold my legs and every minute of the 10 hours was a pure pain. They ran out of normal food, so I got rice and some fermented soya beans that were inedible. Simply Aviation is right - Don't!
1. Legroom is pretty enough there for any Chinese guy, they didn't took Austrian sizes into measure. 2. Airbus aircraft except few very first models are usually safer, higher quality and more advanced technology built than any Boeing model ever. It even feels safer in flight. 3. Why don't you taste that meal before concluding that it was bad? I personally love chinese candies and sweets. (they might be not natural through nd look unusual :) but they taste just amazing). 4. You bought world's "cheapest per mile" flight ticket, Nearly four times as cheap than gas cost for Fiat Cinquecento at same distance, and you still worry about old entertainment system :D .
Well based on my Air China A330 Economy trip from Singapore to Beijing, the flight was actually pretty good.On the seat we were sitting on,me and my mom’s inflight entertainment was not functioning, and the flight attendants kindly helped assign another seat to us that have working inflight entertainment. Then the meal I had was steamed chicken with rice, the meat is somehow juicy and not that hard to chew. The drinks provided quenched our thrust.Few days later me,my mom and her sister took an Air China 777 from Beijing to Shenzhen. The entertainment was ok and the food choice of either beef stew or pork fried rice was both delicious. And some more both flight tickets were affordable. This was back in March 2016
PEK is such a large and beautiful airport, I have been there in April, 2019. However, it was true that there was a lot of people during peak hours, like I stood for an hour for security :D, I also chose Air China, and right, my flight back home from PEK the meal was awful, like a piece of slimy green cake, but my catering on my flight to PEK was impressive though. :D
I think the airport in Beijing always are very cold. So people always try to sit in the sun inside. But at night there are no sun to heat you. After 9-10 hours in that airport you feel cold. So bring a jacket to that airport.
As a high school student living in Beijing, Air China is definitely the airline that I fly most frequently. A 2008 built aircraft is actually pretty old in Air China‘s fleet. No matter it's legroom, in-flight entertainment or even seat itself can be out of date. But, thier newer aircraft is actually fine. 787, A350, 747-8 and the 3-3-3 economy seat configuration 777s are my top choices, if the flight is not operated by these aircrafts, I would prefer to choose other airlines.
Bro I agree. I am actually flying tommorrow on Air China on a Boeing 787 from Dubai International Airport to Beijing Capital Airport. I am OK with the airline, but I would prefer China Southern Airlines as the service is just better.
Used to fly their ancient 333 with no inflight entertainment system onboard from Beijing to Melbourne. And mobile phones weren’t allowed to use inflight back then. Painful 11 hour flight 😅.
If my knees are not touching the seat infront, its good legroom, don't get people who say there isnt enough legroom when theyre knees aren't touching the seat infront
My experience with breakfast on an Asian Airline has been very low too, exception maybe Philippine Airlines. I don't think most airlines have good breakfast food though.
I thoroughly enjoy every one of your videos and frequently watch them more than once. I am very happy when I get a notification that you have posted a new video. I just do not understand why anyone would give any of your videos a thumbs down...I guess you can't please everyone... On another note, have you ever been on a KLM flight where King Willem-Alexander is one of the pilots? I think that would be very cool...keep up the good work!
I flew them once, there was no entertainment screen which I did not need anyway. Pretty cool airline bought ticket just 4 days before flight at cheap price.
Air China is still offering flights to Bangkok from Los Angeles February 2020. I just checked online. Corona Virus is not stoping them from flying yet. I don’t see any connection going to mainland China. Only Taiwan.
Air China offers year round low fares from Europe to basically everywhere in Asia, even biz class has low fares and are an option if you're a star alliance status holder and are in need of some miles to retain your status. Otherwise as this video shows Air China isn't really a quality option....
Air China’s A330 series is absolutely the worst. The legrooms in their 737-800, A320, A321 and B789 are larger. I can’t even stand a 2-hour domestic flight in their A330.
As a Chinese, I must say.... Choose China Southern lmao. But to be fair, Air China fares are unbeatable (for me at least). A flight from Hong Kong to Tokyo via Beijing was LESS THAN HALF compared to what others had to offer, including other transiting flights. As a teenager, that's what we looked for. Oh and the prices were prior to the pandemic ofc.
Ahh, who else is watching this because they haven't done their customary JFK-PEK flight for some time now and vaguely miss it, even though they don't even really like visiting relatives or jetlag or the endless dinners, and certainly not the economy flight?
Airlines in China pay more to pilots than western countries airlines so that is why a lot of foreign pilots fly for Chinese airlines. I fly China Southern and pilot was australian
Emirates, etihad, even singapore airline own by the goverment. Its depend on how they operate not who own it. Even many private own airline is much worse than this
Mofiyinfoluwa Odubola I’ll give you Qatar, but counter with South African Airways and Air India! Two airlines of the most infamous airlines in the sky!
I think long-haul in an a330 would be like long-haul in a Boeing 767... A wonderful experience, unless you compare it to doing the same trip in a 777-300er..
Feels like most Asian airlines makes effort to renew their fleet both outside and inside, and everyone competes about having the best inflight service etc. All except Air China
Never fly on a Chinese airline...lousy service with bad planes. Couple that with Communist Chinese passengers and you have the trip from hell...I made the mistake of flying from Brisbane to Vancouver with a stop over in Guangzhou on China Eastern Airlines...
China southern, Hainan airlines and china eastern definitely offer better services and products ! Also wish that you can try xiamen air long haul flight since you've already tried Hainan airlines, csair and ceair's long haul products
Only China Southern that is great now. China Eastern is a crap and Hainan has some financial difficulties due to the pandemic. A bit sad actually since I quite enjoying their UK to China flights
Air China i dont know about other airlines but give a small snack if you depart at midnight. I fly Beijing to Melbourne in OCT 2019 and it take off 30 mins after midnight and we get 2 sandwhich slices and i think some salad and chocolate bar
Did that Air China A330 Economy trip from PEK to CGK back in April. Miserable! I'm not a big person, but that was the least amount of legroom I've ever experienced! What is the seat pitch anyway? 28-29"?
Between 16.5"-17.5" actually. Decent size for an Asian person but yeah it's a nightmare for Caucasians and Latinos But still I would still fly with them (domestic flights within China) simply because the airline is always get prioritized for basically everything related to air travel due to Air China frequently being used by CCP officials and high-profile celebrities/VIPs
I have seen this video some times. It made me sad because I was supposed to be to fly with them between Germany and Japan in March 2020 and of course the flight got cancelled. There can be said many things about Air China, but the money was refunded two weeks after the cancellation which is not the case by many airlines.
I don’t know if this has anything to do with late night/very early morning flights to Europe, but when I flew to Düsseldorf with air China, my first meal consisted of two very plain sandwiches such as in the video with a bit of cream cheese and a few pieces of lettuce. That’s it. Water and two sandwiches. The next meal was better, but I was very disappointed. When I flew to Beijing from Düsseldorf this wasn’t the case. The food was quite good. Not really sure why there’s such a contrast
never tried air china, their prices are almost the lowest ( hkg to europe for example) cheaper than aeroflot. Been flown with aeroflot 10+ times, not bad, 2 meals for 8 hour flight. personally i do not perfer transitting in PEK... always subject to ATC restrictions, delay happens quite a lot..
@@squares4u CA uses 2-2-2 configuration on dreamliners, window seats passengers have no aisle access, and legroom is very limited. Their a350s use reverse herringbone business class products, better than 787s
I wish people would relate price to amenity. Just off the cuff criticism without reference to the abso cut rate price makes no sense. So SA what about referencing the cost of the ticket before talking like Guide Michelin.
Buddy the most important thing is that you got to VIE safe and sound. You opted to pay for this flight, yes thank you for your honest review. But if you are of a certain height, you could have shelled out a extra few bucks for an Exit row or opted for a Aisle seat. This is just my honest opinion. Again thank you for the video.
I have flown with them from Manila to Beijing and boy, everything about this video is so true! The cabin looks really old, the seat smells bad, and the lavatory is disgusting. NEVER AGAIN!
You get what you pay. Airlines from China are relatively a lot cheaper than other Airlines. So don't expect much & don't compare it with Emirates, Qatar or Etihad either 😂😂😂

If my knees are not touching the seat infront, its good legroom, don't get people who say there isnt enough legroom when theyre knees aren't touching the seat infront
Until the person in front of you reclines their seat.
Is anybody gonna talk about the plane taking off with no strobe and nav lights?
David: thanks for the ride, instead of, thanks for the lovely flight.
Me: 😱
John Aguirre that was the dead giveaway! 😁
I noticed that too.
Your experience wasn't much different to my appalling business flight from Chengdu to Sydney on Air China.
damn that must hv been a painful legroom
My experience with breakfast on an Asian Airline has been very low too, exception maybe Philippine Airlines. I don't think most airlines have good breakfast food though.
In my experience Korean air have a very decent breakfast
Cathay Pacific also has very good breakfast, considering I fly with them every year.
7:48 somehow i imagine that you keep on pressing the remote until you landed yet you still havent finish exploring their IFE. 😂
I managed to explore its IFE during the whole journey! well, the content Air China provided was nothing short of a 13 hour nightmare.
You guys don’t know but pilots in air China relatively have a very high salary that’s why he has an Austrian pilot
SKG Not anymore
Secret Explorer they still do my relative works as a pilot in China southern
The typical CA quality, never fly with them again
Air China A350 / B787 will be very modern and very comfortable.
For business class, take Singapore Airlines, EVA or Cathay or Japan. Air China business class is not up to International standard yet.
Damn that plane's got those microwave IFE installed
Definitely made in China
Rachid Cisse sososofkefl
Ayesha Moussa what?
I personally love the A330, but I understand the struggles of flying in it.
Air China is still offering flights to Bangkok from Los Angeles February 2020.
I just checked online. Corona Virus is not stoping them from flying yet. I don’t see any connection going to mainland China.
Only Taiwan.
8:32 that's the second officer helping with the food tray?
Air China offers year round low fares from Europe to basically everywhere in Asia, even biz class has low fares and are an option if you're a star alliance status holder and are in need of some miles to retain your status. Otherwise as this video shows Air China isn't really a quality option....
Oh nice A330-200. Nice Video greetings from Lake of Constance
Good Thing I didn't choose them for my trip to Vietnam. But Thai in economy wasn't really good too (but still much better than Air China).
BTW, the male 'FA' you see pushing the trolley at breakfast time is actually a security officer
No wonder why they look so intimidating, I noticed on my fight as well from ISB - KHI - PEK
Air China’s A330 series is absolutely the worst. The legrooms in their 737-800, A320, A321 and B789 are larger. I can’t even stand a 2-hour domestic flight in their A330.
0:10 *DID SOMEONE JUST COUGH*
Beijing - London, eleven hours in economy class. I'm 6'8. And he's right about the leg room. Now beat that...
Oh shit man...🤦🏼♂️
Geez...many budget airlines have larger legroom 🤦♂️
As a Chinese, I must say.... Choose China Southern lmao. But to be fair, Air China fares are unbeatable (for me at least). A flight from Hong Kong to Tokyo via Beijing was LESS THAN HALF compared to what others had to offer, including other transiting flights. As a teenager, that's what we looked for. Oh and the prices were prior to the pandemic ofc.
Air China is 5000 dollars more expensive than Southern in my city
There was Minsk.
Greetings from Belarus :D
Greetings from Russia :)
I also work for an airline, honestly I've never realized that an A330 can fly that far because for flight this far we usually use A350 or B-777.
Iberia flies its A330 from Madrid to Tokyo
Aer Lingus flies A330s to LA and San Francisco from Dublin. They also flew to China during 2020 to collect PPE equipment
This is nothing lol. Before Air China bought 777-300ER, the A330 was used on a lot of ridiculous long routes such as PEK-GRU for example 😂
I wonder if the seats on their 747-8 are more spacious/nicer
Is the all-carbs meal some new diet? Sandwich, muffin & pastry?!
You made me laugh when you said „...though croissant „ hahaha :) thanks for the Video! :)
If a Chinese guy made this video, he would be 'Phil Ming', no doubt.
That was pun-ishment.
Boooo 👎
Ahh, who else is watching this because they haven't done their customary JFK-PEK flight for some time now and vaguely miss it, even though they don't even really like visiting relatives or jetlag or the endless dinners, and certainly not the economy flight?
Airlines in China pay more to pilots than western countries airlines so that is why a lot of foreign pilots fly for Chinese airlines. I fly China Southern and pilot was australian
I just love a330s I don't know why and nice video
8:28 it's probably some kind of juice with fruit pieces I think, if anybody cares.
I had a flight with and oman air a330 200 in economie it was the best economy class i have ever flown i
I don’t know which looked worse, the legroom or the food! I guess that’s what happens when the government owns an airline...
So why is government-owned Turkish Airlines (chaired by a known Erdogan Ally) *so good,* then? 😬
Qatari Gov own Qatar Airways though.
Paolo Ariedo but Turkish Airlines posted big losses last year and didn’t even pay a dividend to shareholders.
I think long-haul in an a330 would be like long-haul in a Boeing 767...
A wonderful experience, unless you compare it to doing the same trip in a 777-300er..
2:50am flight just a bit toooooooo early for me 🤣
Feels like most Asian airlines makes effort to renew their fleet both outside and inside, and everyone competes about having the best inflight service etc. All except Air China
8:51
Hello from Minsk;)
Thanks for a video!
never flown them, will never fly with them after this video
Never fly on a Chinese airline...lousy service with bad planes.
Couple that with Communist Chinese passengers and you have the trip from hell...I made the mistake of flying from Brisbane to Vancouver with a stop over in Guangzhou on China Eastern Airlines...
charles harper yeah never know when you can catch a deadly disease from any of those rats 🐀
I really appreciate the honest opinions on the flights. Sorry to hear that the flight was not very great, David.
Decent size for an Asian person but yeah it's a nightmare for Caucasians and Latinos
But still I would still fly with them (domestic flights within China) simply because the airline is always get prioritized for basically everything related to air travel due to Air China frequently being used by CCP officials and high-profile celebrities/VIPs
Awesome video man! I really enjoyed it :)
Smart uploading AIRCHINA FEB 2019 VIDEO IN FEB 2020 😉😉😉
Avoid their a330s, their cabin products are pretty old. 787s (except business class) and a350s are fine
What’s wrong with their 787 business class? Genuinely curious...
@@squares4u CA uses 2-2-2 configuration on dreamliners, window seats passengers have no aisle access, and legroom is very limited. Their a350s use reverse herringbone business class products, better than 787s
Very nice video like usual 👏🏻✌️💙
Looks like UA’s 777-200s
I very enjoy Air China 747-8 and A350 product tho...777 and 787 is alright, but for some reason A330 was just bad
Thought the Hash Browns was a biscuit
I wish people would relate price to amenity. Just off the cuff criticism without reference to the abso cut rate price makes no sense. So SA what about referencing the cost of the ticket before talking like Guide Michelin.
Buddy the most important thing is that you got to VIE safe and sound.
You opted to pay for this flight, yes thank you for your honest review. But if you are of a certain height, you could have shelled out a extra few bucks for an Exit row or opted for a Aisle seat. This is just my honest opinion. Again thank you for the video.
No,thanks service and food is terrible
He's got some serious balls.
