    I’ve driven between Bethel and Redding dozens of times, but never thought to go up onto Gallows Hill Road. It must have a history.

      I think that's where General Putnam hanged the spies during the Revolution.

      Yes, I looked up the history. In 1778-79, General Israel Putnam and 3000 of the Revolutionary War soldiers were encamped in Redding, and they caught two spies of the King. After a trial, they were each hung on a gallows, and shot. General Putnam made such a big deal of this because he wanted other soldiers to recognize the risk of becoming a traitor. There is a lot of history on this route.

    I lived in west redding between 1965 & 1969, I hitch hiked (thats how kids got around back then) and rode with other high school kids all around Bethel & Redding. I never realized hopw many victorian house there were in Bethel dozens from what I see, maybe hundreds................. who knew?
