- Custom stump splitter fabricated by Sunrise Excavating for a one man operation. We get paid to take the stumps from land developers and the split wood is sold to a co-generation plant for fuel.
Video using the Sony FDR-AX100 4K camcorder.
Ro'ber Harpane's comments below state some observations that I had as well. I was/am impressed with how clean his yard was, and the fact that he used his boom as a pivot point to lift and rotate the entire machine without leaving huge gouges in the ground like he might have had he just rotated reversed one tread and forwarded the other. Most impressive that he can handle the splitter via remote control from the cab. At first I was wondering where his helper was, or maybe the photographer was lending a hand.
A tip of the hat to you MrShoptaw for your video recording skills and abilities. You're videos are professionally done, with numerous camera angles and letting the subject do the movement, not the camera with crazy zooms and movements.
Your videos of the steam mill are most impressive. Thank you for your efforts, your work and the time you take to post these videos on RUclips for folks like me to enjoy from the comfort of our own home. They certainly allow us to "be there" and see how things are done, sharing the experiences of others.
Much appreciated!
Thank you, we certainly appreciate the positive comments. Thanks for watching. :>)
I have to agree with you re: the operator of the excavator. That man was very experienced and left none of the divots one usually sees from one of these machines moving about. His yard was very clean for such a type of operation.

romans 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Many of those that are left behind were seen in deep regret and many hung themselves on fences on interstates , and roadways and different places, their cars left by the roadside and many others also used their cars to kill them selves wrecking into things . It will be a horrible time , and regret will cause many to commit suicide .
NOW is the time, dont wait until its too late seek Please Christ Jesus NOW.
Those not going in the rapture and left behind , who rejected Christ Jesus' Love, and those that are practicing sin will have a big nightmare when left after the rapture example woman dancing in topless bar practicing sin , will NOT go in the rapture when it happens abruptly , and many other examples of willfully practicing sin daily .matthew 25 :1-13 parable of the 10 virgins, 5 were wise 5 were foolish and payed a severe price . To me, this job would just be wonderful. I expect some days would be stressful, but I would still love it. My problem would be, because I'm a woodturning addict, I would go home every night with a truck load of the best roots! Lovely video. Thank you.
Thanks, glad you watched the video.
Looks like you guys are in gold rush country where they did hydraulic mining. Am I in the ballpark with my hunch? Awesome video, bet there are occaisional rattlers lurking under those stumps now and then. Love these videos you post Mr Shoptaw, right up my alley, many thanks to you for all your efforts and troubles to share these with us.
You are right, they did that type of mining close by. Glad you are enjoying the videos. I certainly enjoy making them. :>)
That's really impressive. I'd say it wouldn't be bothered much by an undiscovered piece of metal in a stump. :D The operator's skills are really impressive! Greetings from Australia!
Thanks for the comments and glad you watched my video.
The technique in this video is so excellent
thanks. I'm glad you watched the video.
Very cool video! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
This HAS to be the slowest excavator operator known to mankind!!!!
YEP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for watching.
Any business owner would rather a smooth slower operator than a goon on the controls always breaking shit.
For those that don’t understand what the purpose is here, in most urban areas you can’t burn stumps. So you grind them in large industrial stump grinders turning the stumps into chips to be burned in cogeneration plants creating electricity. It is more efficient to grind smaller pieces in a grinder, you can’t just chuck a twelve foot stump in a grinder and expect to be efficient and profitable. This appears to work well for large stumps. This guy had a yard where contractors pay him dump fees to accept the wood waste and he creates a product he then sells to the cogen plant. Money coming and going, he’s getting rich, and so can you if you buy it.
I bet it was fun designing, as well as, building the splitter.
Yes indeed.
Very cool ! Looks to be a lot of custom building went into that splitter ! The guy operating has great skills. Time to cook.
That excavator operator has got a lot of finesse!
He is a skilled operator indeed.

Your skills and machinery are a great match.

I reckon that's better than hauling that Cat around the countryside. I'm looking forward to getting a mini-excavator and having a go at my little acre of jungle paradise very soon.

Nice setup you have there.

Nice operation. Looked like he could pick up a dime with that excavator.

Interesting machine. Interesting video. Thanks for sharing & looking for more interesting videos from you as time goes on. Excellent video MrShoptaw !
Low Budget Scale Modeling. The splitter is my brothers brainchild and works like a champ.
We had some pretty large stumps, gave then serious a pressure wash / clean with an industrial p/washer, and sold them for really good money, as Tim Hyatt said, some wood workers pay huge money for unusual grained timber, The hardwood ones always get sold.
+mountfields - we will have to look into that. Thanks, :>)
+mountfields Woodturners like "unusual grained timber" as you say ,I'm an amateur one here in Brittany and my favorite is yew with its twisted grain ,grows everywhere here ,most beautiful wood we got here..

He knocked that tiny bit of wood off the far side of the splitter at 6.22 with the thumb before picking up the bigger bit to dump behind it , moving slowly and delicately around the splitter so not to cause it damage , good operator
Just like flicking a crumb off the plate with your finger. :>)
I see you like your tools. We all do. I have an idea for you. How about a huge broom with three foot-long bristles that you can grab with your excavator bucket and clean off your splitter, for when it gets too caked up with debris from the stumps. Build one, do a video, and let me know when you upload the video. I'd love to see it in action. Y be the first to have one. How cool would that be. Good luck, and take care.
Hum? I like that idea. I'll pass it along to the guys. :>)
+MrShoptaw I looked them up, and Hill Tip makes brooms for mini excavators but not like the one I described. Those bristles are approximately 12" tall.
Good job 👍🏻

Super nice excavator.
Thanks for watching.
We have a few operations around me that chip giant stumps in a tub grinder or similarly mechanically process them to dispose of them. I have seen the price tags on even used equipment like this and I just don't see how they are able to justify it. It costs nothing to stack the stumps up and let them break down naturally, and with the right potash or whatever sprinkled on them, it doesn't really take all that long. I like the idea of making something productive of them, but I wonder in the end of theres any meat left on the bone.
Thanks for watching.
Well im impressed by the operator off the finess he have whit that cat digger if it Was me i probely would have gon for a material handler whit a grappel and wheels instead off tracks and if you guyes see this comment i would love a follow up video on What happens whit the stumps after you have split them and yes i read the description on the video they become fuel butt videos are better
Thanks for watching the video. Unfortunately we don't have access to the power plant to video.
@@MrShoptaw aaa ok to bad
I was eyeballing that boulder sitting up on top, and wondered if it fell off yet. Nope, still there, and it was fun to watch him flick it off with the excavator, like it was a speck of lint on your shirt!
This operator has good control of the machine, Thanks for watching.
I suppose you could dig out and clean up around your splitter? Is there a reason to keep you work-space like that?
Yes. The operator learned that just the right amount of debris helps support the stump for splitting. Thanks for watching. :>)
Aside from splitting the stumps, what purpose is this for? I don't understand the usefulness unless they were getting it into more manageable sizes to go into a wood chipper to use for mulch or fuel for something. I'm kinda surprised they just don't burn them to get rid of them. Before you bash me, I'm a paramedic not a heavy equipment operator. Is there a economical purpose for this much cost and effort to split the stumps?
Often on large land clearing projects, the contractor needs to dispose of the large stumps. When burning, or other means is not an option, the stumps are delivered to us free of charge. They are then split and the wood sold to a local co-generation plant as fuel. Thanks for watching. :>)
Thanks for the reply, and thanks for the videos. Sure makes a slow shift go by easier!
thank you , very nice operation
Thanks, glad you watched the video. :>)
wow, you don't see a lot of 3145's anymore! good old engine!

It's old school reliability and performance. It doesn't fit the hipsters and their organic way of life. Not enough chrome and too much actual work.
waw that is really amazing, nice video of that :) that is a one way how to make the tree stamps smaller....lol

Make a pile and burn them, Fire does such a neat job, nothing left but a black spot on the ground.
Or better yet sell the wood to the co-generation plant and let them burn it which is what was done with them.
I suspect the generating power plant built the firebox with a certain wood size in mind knowing the expense of owning and operating a stump grinder/chipper. Likely chips would not work as well for this application. The expense to chip over split would be huge.
You are probably right. Thanks for watching.
That splitter is AWSOME!!!!!!! did you build that yourself? Seems to split those stumps fast!
Yes, built from unused items laying around the shop.
Great brute forcing methodology. Machinery designed and run by the people who know how to use it. So rare these days.

I think Diesel fuel is much cheaper in the USA? I have just (May 2024) paid slightly over £0.78 per litre for 4000 litres of red (tractor) Diesel - that's £2.95 an US gallon. It has actually gone down - last year we paid £0.85 a litre at harvest time.
.
All fuel in California is ridiculously expensive.
@@MrShoptaw Hello Charlie! I'm surprised to hear that! In the UK our government puts a huge amount of tax on fuel. I think Diesel for road vehicles is around £1.60 a litre here - That's over £6.00 a US gallon. Diesel isn't as much as that in California is it? (Agricultural users like me pay at lot less for tractor - red - Diese) John.
Would have love to see what you Ram's composition looks at the front ‼️🤔🤔

Yes it does. :>)
Awesome splitter, cat powered that's bad ass
Thanks for watching. :>)
old is gold
Thanks for watching.
Question why put your bucket down and then turn the tracks. What is the reason?
I'm just the videographer, but I believe the reason is, it minimizes the damage the tracks make to the ground. :>)
In Tacoma, there is or was a splitter with 4 eight foot knives arranged like an "asterisk" the push plate was about 10'x10' and it split stumps into sizes that would fit in a chipper. Why they didn't use a bowel chipper I don't know. The whole thing had a table around 15' and was powered by an old 16-71 GMC with straight stacks. What a horrible machine to work around, but it could break anything that was set on the table.
Sounds like a beast! :>)
I LOVE your splitter but why are you doing this??
Landfills won't take stumps so developers pay us to take them. The co-generation plant then buys the wood for fuel. So get paid coming and going.
That's how good old fashioned American capitalism works, hats off to you Sir!
I don’t get it….the stumps are cut in half🤷 Now what?
Wood is sold to power plant.
Grinder is much more productive, but if you split them up you still have large debris, nice excavator btw
The split wood is sold to a wood fired plant for fuel.
1 question. Why? I don't get what U do with it after U split it? No good for fire wood. If U want to burn it just burn the stump whole? Seems like a lot of effort for little reward. Unless I missed something?
Land developers pay to take the stumps off their hands and the co-generation plant pays for the split wood to use as fuel.
Have you ever had one It struggles with?
Not really. Thanks for watching.
Reminds me of when I used to watch paint dry.
Thanks for watching.
What is this ? Candied camera !!!
sounds good to me. :>)
How many tons of force is the splitter? Charles Taylor out.
I'm just the video guy. Sorry I don't know more about the setup in that regard. Thanks for watching.
Why does one want to split stumps? What happens to the split pieces of stump?
The wood is then purchased by a co-generation plant for fuel.
Good job, Thank you for your information.
Thanks, glad you watched the video.
I think he should be cleaning in front of the ram more often, dirt wears everything fast
Yes it does.

That's American Power !!!
Yes indeed. Thanks for watching.
At first, I thought that CAT was going to steamroll over that car. Woops, wrong video.
Thanks for watching
I would like to make a single comment about the efficiency of the splitting. I've seen many other log splitters that use a variation of the splitting head that has multiple wedges and wings so a single thrust will result in more than two pieces. Those examples are mainly for firewood and want to result in cleaner pieces. But in this case, I see a simple four or five way split head would give the necessary finish. Because you take the time to place and orient the stump in a favorable angle to the splitter head, this would give you the desired results in one action. Besides, I think the monster hydraulic motor and cylinder will have the power to use a spit head with more facets to the wedge. You have so many stumps to work through, it would be helpful to accomplish the task in fewer movements. How to you feel about that? Interesting subject for a video, thank you.
Good suggestion. I don't see why that wouldn't work. Thanks for watching and thinking outside the box.
i live in Topeka Kansas forestry has a tub grinder that would take that stump in one bite and spin it around like it was trig
in less then ten minutes nothing left but splinters that's a small
stump you should big ones
Sounds cool. Thanks for watching.
This video has a bizzare amount of downvotes for a video whose title and thumbnail perfectly show the video's content. The hell were you expecting?
I agree. Go figure. :>)
Manual thumbs are better for tree stumps if you don't have to dig and move dirt often...heck the force of the bucket on stump against manual thumb picks it part somewhat..neat machines though
Thanks, glad you watched the video. :>)
To each their own but I disagree. I'll take a hydraulic thumb every time. Want to spit a stump, chop it with the teeth. Company I work for has a hydraulic stump splitter for a hoe. Basically take your hand ,split your fingers two on each side and your thumb moves between them splitting the stump. Its also made to tear them out of the ground.
Huh..really
That's pretty cool!
Thanks. :
Seems like a lot of work to split a stump we have a 345 we replaced the the thumb with a stump spliter thumb just a wedge but thing works like a champ
Very cool. :>)
Some people don't know you have to move these stumps an that cost money. So splitting them saves money an you can use the product.
That is the case here. :>)
So now what happens to the mashed up stumps ?
The wood is sold to a co-generation plant for fuel.
Wouldn't it be easier to just use a tub grinder?
Then the wood couldn't be sold to the power plant.
I'm curious to know: what is done with the remnants of the splits stumps afterward?
The split wood is then sold to a co-generation plant for fuel
Great idea for the splitter. Let me start by saying that's a beautiful excavator. We deal with some wood lots and timber products. We purchased a used Cat 325cl model excavator about two years ago, it has a pin grabber coupler like yours, [I think]. We tried to purchase a thumb attachment [tool bar] like yours, four teeth. Our machine, which took us months to find with a pin grabber, and fully progressive thumb has only two teeth on the thumb attachment. Question, if you don't mind: Can the center two teeth of your thumb strike the excavator's boom? Our machine is a little older then yours but has a few additional parts that operate it's thumb. Our machine can not, and the CAT dealer in our area says a two teeth thumb is the only attachment available for our version.
Glad you like the video. Sorry I can't help with you questions. I'm just the videographer and know nothing about the equipment. If you want to know about my camera, I can help there. :>)
I'll see if I can get the owner of the equipment to respond.
Yes, the thumb will strike the boom. We welded a heavy plate on the boom in the strike area, the boom steel is not thick enough to handel the striking and eventually the boom will be damaged after repeated strikes. The reason the thumb hits the boom is because of the pin grabber, it adds extra length to the stick. Just something you have to live with and be careful with.
Where are you located? That canyon looks familiar.
Clear creek road.
That things no joke!
Gets the job done. :>)
What do you do with the wood
It is sold to a co-generation plant for fuel.
Why splitting these stumps? Firewood?
Yes, sold to wood burning plant.
@@MrShoptaw Thanx!
I move a lot of stumps and dig big holes and build machinery, so I see your skill and industry. But if you got a good accountant to add up your fuel costs, labor, splitter, and moving the wood several times, I can't imagine your not losing money - unless that power plant is paying a premium under some subsidy to get rid of wood from the landfill. It would pay back if the geniuses that built the wood burner made a door large enough to take a whole stump or half the tree. Wasting diesel to break up the wood is very fuelish. And I know too well what an hour really costs on a large excavator.
Garbage dumps charge to bring in yard waste/wood then process it and/or compost it and sell it.
Concrete plans charge to bring in concrete from roads, curbing, and such then process it usually crushing it then mix it in new concrete and sell it back to you.
It dryes better when it has been splitted ?
@@mollevej30 o
what will be gone further with the wood?
