Great video!! I was able to bring my VCR back to life! Now I can finally watch my James Bond collection (RIP Sean Connery). Thanks so much for taking the time to put this up!
I had my VCR all along, but was never used for 18 years. Had this same problem where the disc was not rotating at all. Unscrewed it, used some coconut oil to loosen it up, and now it works just fine. Thank You so much @norcal715!!
Great video! I actually had the complete opposite problem, where it would not eject at all. This was after I took it apart to clean out the one I just purchased. It would try and eject, but wasn't prevented from going out because the door would not open. You video helped out greatly for me to figure out the issue. I wasn't aware I had to leave the door open while re-attaching the front. Thank you!!!!!
Thank you so much man, bless ya life, I was able to get mine SLV-T2000 to work, and now I have to figure out why it has so much trouble with rewind and why the IR light thing doesn't work. I am still happy for what I've done today.
Thank you. I have a SLV-780HF here with the same transport mechanism. Tape would load but not play. When going into play, there would be a loud "clicking" noise. It turned out to be the slip clutch. The plastic bearing in the center of the clutch (the wheel that you removed that was held by the small plastic clip) had frozen up. A few drops of oil got it freed up and playing again. The problem was probably caused by lack of use rather than worn from too much use.
Older VCR units such as from the 80s and 90s will always have technical problems. I found out later models from 2000-2005 still have good image and are less prone to failure especially since many of these have not been used extensively, since this was the time when people started buying DVD units. In my opinion, go with a JVC or Panasonic made after 2000 that has seen little use, and keep these unplugged while not in use to help the capacitors last longer.
Hi, nice video. The capstan brake was stuck, you can clearly see the little white plastic piece moving and bending a little. Then it freed up and you were able to rotate the motor. This is at the 3:39 time mark.
Hello to all of you. I watched this video, was very useful to learn something new. I have SLV-SE810 VCR and have a problem with it. I can't insert the tape at all, no matter what I've tried. If you know something about it, please tell me how to fix it. Will be grateful.
Well this video has been somewhat useful in disassembly for me it's same model... However my problem is I don't have any power, fuse is fine... Any suggestions???
Great video, thank you! Would love some advice on a Sony SLV-ED8. The cassette is immediately ejected. Upon dismantling it, there was a little spring with a broken piece of plastic still attached to it. Any ideas?
I have the same problem but in my case the tape is going to the head. It ejects the tape after 2 or 3 seconds. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
Great Job. You know your stuff. You should engineer these things to make them last! I have a Sony SLV700HF that make a squealing sound when the tape is installed in the deck and then it ejects the tape. Any insight into what I can do to repair this unit? Thanks. Rock On
Useful stuff. I'm surprised that you were willing to put one of your own unique tapes against the head of a stranger's VCR without, apparently, first making sure the head was clean.
I had to order that blue gear and when I went to put the white gear back in, I got it in place but then the center pin that it fits on - pushed down where I couldn't get the snap on. So I took it off and tried again and it now keeps pushing in. When I did get the gear on and the snap on the pin - I started to put the large white gear on and as I rotated the gears it pulled that pin up making the gear vulnerable to being stripped. Do I need to glue that pin now? It has a perfect slip hole but nothing to hold it in place
Hi, I hope you can point me to the right direction. I have a Sony SLV-X822 that loads the tape up fine but is struggling to keep up regular smooth, consistent play speed. I popped the top off and notice that it the motor is fighting an uphill battle to maintain play speed. I have used several tapes with the same result. Fast forward and rewind show no issues!
I think is the issue with my vcr combo crt tv! It's built a little different and the vcr player is at on top of the screen haha I will try this sometime thank you
My mum just gave me our old childhood Panasonic VCR that has been sitting idle for well over a decade, and is showing the same exact behaviour. Takes the tape, stares for a couple of seconds and spits it back out. I'll check what's going on at the bottom and see if anything welded together all these years.
@@norcal715 l just brought a Sony VCR slv 1000 It was working great for 3 weeks But one night it would Not ejected The tape so I opened it up And I held the plastic door way with a small screw drive I freed the tape But now it won't load the tape Do you fix VCR and how much ? I have a question for you. I have a sony model slv-780HF. Its acting as if a tape is already in it. When I hit the eject button it goes through the numbers and pushes out, but after a few seconds it pulls back in like a tape is in there, then goes back to playback mode. So it's like I have a ghost vhs tape. Can you help?
Hi. I have the same mechanism and this machine does not play any cassette since 7 years ago. I put a cassette in, but the cassette do not play an is stocked. I trying to find someone in Costa Rica that can help me but no luck. Did you have any sugestion to repair it?
I have so many old VCRs with this issue, even with these videos I still don't have the patience to take them apart and do these fixes. I could easily have 10 working VCRs if I would just do it.
Thanks my grandson purchased VCR players none work. So Nana called to assist with 5 VCR players . I'm experienced in micro electronics and rework not VCR not DVD players..I've reviewed this I do believe 1st is to clean the parts with pullies blow out dust ..I not used desolder tool before . where to purchase?
If it is yellow then something is wrong, The grease I use is the clear type. The machine oil is Zoom Spout oil. The dielectric grease is available at almost any auto parts store. The oil is available at most appliance repair shops.
I just bought a vcr for my kid. $4 at a garage sale, it has this issue where it takes the tape, makes noise then spits it back out. I’m going to give it a whirl.
Hi, I have the same model and was having the same problem. After I took it apart, got it to take the tape, but now it just won't play it. It does fast forward and rewind (only for a second or two before stoping). It does make a sound like something is stuck though. Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Greetings. Any tips for problems like this: The VCR plays, forward, rewind perfect. All is good.... except when i press eject. There is a great chance it won't spin the magnetic tape back correct/enough so there is still tape outside the cassette when it drops down the "flap" and ejects the tape = wrinkled tape, or it will get stuck in there. I have this on a copuple of players. They just seem fine until you try to eject the cassette. I opened one up and can clearly see it is not "spooling" the tape enough/correctly, but i can not see where the issue would be. Plz help!
probably the clutch in the center that switches from low torque in the play mode to high torque in the FF-REW/eject position. Also could be a brake not releasing the reel tables at the correct time too.
Hi I have a JVC HR-S860 SVHS VCR when I insert a tape it powers off, could it be a mode switch issue, also the VCR has a blow fuse and that makes a noise, not sure what the issue maybe. Please reply.

I should consider sending off my Sony DVD/VCR combo to you instead of throwing it out. The DVD player recently died and now the VCR is exhibiting the same problems as this one. Thankfully, it didn't destroy the tape I had playing on loop, but I did have to open it up to extract the DVD that was stuck inside - I did consider trying to replace the DVD logic board, but I couldn't find anything that matched the part number :( And without DVD functionality, I couldn't set time or even access settings exclusively for the VCR

Dude, I gotta try this. I have a VCR of a different model but with the same mechanism that behaves almost the same. Will report back if it works. Didn't work, it still gets stuck in the cassette down position. Do you happen to have a video setting up the timing on this mechanism, including the loading mechanism? I have the service manual for this mechanism, and I think I have most of the holes aligned in the right way, because when I apply voltage to the loading motor, everything works perfectly fine. But everything breaks when I put the loading mechanism back on, and the service manual doesn't say much about the loading mechanism. Ignore that, I think the problem is the gear that connects to the metal slider of the front loading mechanism, some of the teeth are damaged. Anyone knows the part number or a way to try and fix it?
Great video. My special needs child still loves watching vhs. How much did you charge to fix the problem. My child’s vcr just started doing that today.

Something must be sticking until it overcomes the force then the spring tension releases and the tape and it shoots out.
