I started heavy weight lifting when I was 51, I am 57 now and my body is lean and my skin is thick. I never looked better. I do this for myself, but I am also setting an example for my daughters who workout daily now. My diet is heavy on the protein side. I do not take any medications.

Hello, I too, can't take any Hormone therapy because I am scared of blood clots and I had a varice already ... Just a question, how much protein you take in a day, I heard you need like 120/130gr per day, that's a lot!! I bought some powder plant protein to make a shake in the evening and I do work out 3 times a week, kettlebell mostly... Would you say that it is more your protein intake than the weight training itself that thickened your skin? Thank you 🙂

You can NOT stave off menopause symptoms!! You can alleviate them. The symptoms can be VAST! Your hormones dictate EVERY aspect of you. I am 60 and it was rough/extreme. I exercise 7 days a week I eat well and weigh 125 and my body looks NOTHING like it did. Menopause is a VERY individual person to person thing, it hits ALL of us different. You can't prevent body changes, but you can address them and tweak them as they happen. HRT is NOT the be all and MANY of us can't have them. Be your own advocate because the Med community seems to know less than us, research and try out pre/pro-biotics and soy milk or whatever works. It does get better in time. Talk to each other as women and contribute knowledge to each other.

I'm 42 and when I turned 40 it was like a switch over night and I was all of a sudden storing fat around my waist and thighs even though I exercise A LOT. I also have insomnia since 6 months ago, I do get hot at night more now, mood changes, fatigue is extremely hard when trying to function, I'm forgetting things and other people get angry with me, body aches and pains and infertility, had a miscarriage and I don't know if I'm able to try again.
My best friend says he's loving ageing and it's great- I'm like "but you're a male, female ages faster and harder". Men just don't get it at all unless they are a doctor like you.

I had so many of these symptoms (I am post-menopause by about almost 2 years) and I ended up taking HRT. I love HRT. I got tired of being tired and not sleeping. I also take magnesium Glycinate. Between these two things, I’m so much happier. Fortunately I haven’t had the “meno belly” yet but I do a lot of pelvic floor/core exercises… maybe that’s why I don’t have that? But I agree even without HRT, a healthy diet (Mediterranean for me) and exercise just helps you regardless of age. Weight training is important for women in this age group, too. Oh, I love hummus!! Confirming what many other women in the comments mentioned: weight training and eating healthy are key! Working out with weights will help to keep your metabolism, hormones and blood sugar levels in check. I´m almost 51 and I do notice changes in my skin: it ages faster and needs better skincare than before, but apart from that I have no hot flashes or trouble sleeping and I feel like I am 30! I read once that women in China and Japan have way less issues during menopause and the latest studies on aging show again and again that a healthy fat level (below 30%) is PARAMOUNT! Keep your blood sugar levels stable by eating 3 nutritious meals and no snacking in between ( your teeth will also thank you for this! 😉) and eat enough calories! Dieting will only slow your metabolism and make you hold on to fat.

I’m 45 and haven’t seen a difference in weight distribution or the ability to maintain a healthy body fat level and weight yet. Unfortunately, I do see skin changes such as dryness and laxity in the past few years. I do weight train 4-5 times per week, get around 10,000 steps per day, only have caffeinated tea once in a while, no alcohol or smoking (never have), eat mostly unprocessed food and very minimal added sugar. Maybe it will hit me in the next few years but my habits are good which will hopefully help🙏

Great video! You truly are an integrative physician. I've never received this much information from a GYN doctor. When I went through menopause 6 years ago, I was told BHRT or SSRI. In otherwards women had to choose one to alleviate the symptoms. I chose BHRT, but i think combining with these natural procedures is highly advantageous!😊

I'm in peri-menopause and USED to have hot flashes daily. Caffeine via coffee (even just 6oz of cold not hot coffee) was THE trigger of my hot flashes. I don't drink other caffeinated beverages so it was easy to figure out after I read an article that mentioned caffeine can be a trigger. I stll treat myself with an occasional small cup to sip on and doesn't seem to cause problems but caffeine /coffee daily is off the table. You may want to try half calf and see if that works for you. Hope this helps!

I remember when my mother stopped eating spicy foods, she had an expression, "Burns so good going down, burns so bad going out." It's not always heartburn that gets us. I now know what she was talking about, and no longer crave super spicy foods and the burning bowl movement that results from their ingestion. I stopped enjoying hot peppers in my later forties.
Intermittent fasting has helped me I have had an easier time maintaining a healthy weight since menopause, than in my twenties; and believe it's because I restrict eating to between t0am and 6pm most days. My diet is not as healthy as it used to be, I've gotten lazy about food choices since I'm staying thin and need to do better. I have given up caffeine and alcohol, since they clearly cause terrible hot flashes. It's been almost three years since a period. Hot flashes happen, but they are mild if don't have coffee or alcohol. If I stopped eating sugar and empty carbs, the hot flashes would probably stop. I don't think healthy fats are a problem.
Everyone I know who complains of extreme hot flashes refuses to give up caffeine, people feel dependent on it to be good workers and entitled to it,
I'm not on hormones and haven't been to a doctor in many years. I practice yoga and hike, but nothing extreme for exercise. Intermittent fasting is a game changer- improving sleep, digestion and hormone regulation- and it's free and easier to do than extreme diet and exercise plans that others turn to. I feel like kids should learn about it in school. Learning to engage my cores muscles so I can sit and stand with proper posture has been huge too.

Biology isn't destiny. Lifestyle plays a big part. My mother was overweight, depressed, had heavy periods during menopause, hot flashes. Just suffered through it but that was her generation. I have used bioidentical estradiol patches for years, am slim and fit by keeping calories below 2000 and exercising nearly every day. Nothing strenuous, just walking a couple of miles and using my sets of 4 lb and 6 lb dumbbells 3x week. I have a sweet tooth and don't deprive myself. But all things in moderation! He has reversed his diabetes, and is not taking any medications any more and even has perfect cholesterol numbers. My spices are oregano, curry. Basil, garlic powder, or minced, onion powder. Paprika regular or smoked. So many more.
My symptoms were hot flashes, and at the time, I didn't know, but I had a prolapse. Was told it was hereditary since my mm had this happen. I kept asking back in my later 40s about menopause and my Dr said once you get hot flashesyou will know. So not fair as that was inaccurate. I had ti deal with vag dryness or atrophy. It was awful and shouldn't have come to that as I ask repeatedly about menopause and I had a partial hysterectomy and ask about hormones and was told I didn't need those. I trusted my Dr. Ugh. As of last Dec I went to a naturopath Dr and was helped and listened to. Finally

I started menopause at 21 years old. I had to have a radical hysterectomy, due to endometriosis. I started hormones( estrogen) off and on, and now I've been on them consistently for several years. I am almost 49 years old and I do believe that being on these hormones has helped me look younger. Everyone says I don't look my age. People often say I look like I'm 35. I think hormones do help a lot. I don't do anything special for my skin care. I'm very low maintenance. Good genes also help. The estrogen patches definitely helps me. I also don't follow a strict diet. I don't eat the healthiest, which I know I should. I also don't really exercise, although I'm planning on starting to do that soon. I don't have any wrinkles either, yet. I'm sure they're coming soon though.

This is very helpful to me. I’m peri menopause and I was lucky to get advice to stay away from fatty foods and sugar, which I can’t do. I was eating more vegetables and fruits, I cut back on salt and avoided pizza because I have learned it is hard on the pancreas once you turn 50. I don’t like sandwiches because I don’t like eating bread that much and having rice and pasta is enough for me. I also cut back on chips and bake sweet potato with seasoning instead.
My weight gain is is incredibly high. My blood shows that my thyroid meds is working, (I’m under active but blood test show my dosage is correct)but my doctor decided to increase the dosage to see if it can help with my weight. The next step will have to be saxenda or the other new drug to help with my weight. I need more education on Saxenda and the other drug. When I retire, I don’t think I can afford this prescription and I live in Ontario. I don’t know what to do and my weight is out of control. I also want to mention that my portions is small, sometimes I don’t have an appetite as I used to and can have only up to two small meals a day and a mini snack. It took me six months or more to loose two pounds.

    • @jenA9026
      @jenA9026 6 месяцев назад +1

Perhaps consult a qualified dietitian. From what you've written it sounds like you used to eat chips, salty and fatty food etc. Combine that with dropping estrogen and reduced muscle mass and you WILL gain fat. Resistance training to maintain or grow muscles will help, but you must also make sure your protien is high enough. Keep the simple carbs (high glycaemic index carbs) to a minimum. Gradually change your diet. Try checking out "Flipping 50" channel for exercise tips. If youre a beginner at exercise try Upright Health. Although the latter is aimed at seniors it gives a great start to building functional strength before you get to picking up weight training. 💜

I was taking Zoloft for years before for anxiety and they switched me to Paxil to help with the hot flashes. It does help. I would like to switch to SAMe to see if that would help.

Also it would help a lot of women if these kinds of videos started off by stating how fabulous and VALUED women should be. This stuff is truly traumatic! No man will ever understand the depths of struggle of a female. I believe you genuinely want to help women...but start with the positive first please not all the doom and gloom right off the bat. Thank you! :-)

Word! I have to remind myself that getting old is a privilege and I'm a much more interesting woman, and more valuable to society, now that I'm older (older than fertile is what everyone means by that!) 💜

I see patients in real life every day. They want me for my data, my solutions....and yes....my compassion. If you do net see that in me then please unsubscribe. With youtube you need to get straight to the point or people click away and your video is hidden. This is an important video for the science.

I absolutely see your compassion and thank you for your genuine work and intentions! You have no idea how upsetting this stuff is for women. Our whole world's unravel in a very short period of time... we are gaslit lit, devalued, abused, called crazy lose our careers and relationships... and many of us haven't real info to navigate menopause! Our GPs are mainly clueless! It's insane. If men had their testes shrivel up at 50 they would lose it!..and there would be health care and real studies to support them...unlike what there is available for women.

My doctor keeps trying to push an SSRI on me for my fatigue and brain fog problem. Any symptom I am feeling he says is psychosomatic, but I am not an idiot. I went in recently post-virus with a prolonged coughing symptom that isn't the way I normally recover. "psychosomatic" "psychosomatic" until my xray shut him up, I had bronchitis.
I can't afford a specialist for HRT so I went back on an OC. He refused to have my hormones checked. My obgyn, and a few other doctors before this one, too.

    Great information!
But how to we treat thinning skin on the body, specifically hands, arms, and legs? Retinoids are too expensive to use all over everyday, and retinols are unpredictable given we don't know how much Vit A is actually available after the body converts it twice.

There are some body lotions that have retinol in them but I honestly haven’t seen a difference when using use them versus just a good moisturizer

As inca3370 said, our bones and muscles are shrinking and our skin getting loose. Build those muscles and bones. For the skin, eat as healthily as you can afford and try skin needling. But... we'll still turn into old ladies if we're lucky. Aging is a privilege, I have to keep reminding myself of that! 💜

Try lotions with alpha hydroxy acid and/or lactic acid. Helps with exfoliation and boosts cell turnover

Exercise is one of the best choices (especially strength training mixed in with some cardio). Also, decreasing carbohydrates intake.

I think another one is that you become way more sensitive to caffeine. This is backed up by studies out there. I can't tolerate coffee as I used to. Switching to green/white tea has been a blessing. Caffeine from tea does not hit me as badly as with coffee. Could you make more videos on skin thinking and how to address it, preferably with at home or affordable methods?

I had a tough time with caffeine too, but on occasion I will have an espresso or a cold brew. Cold brew is not ice coffee. It’s different. Both the espresso and cold brew does not cause me acid reflux now that I’m in post menopause. You’re right though about being sensitive to caffeine now. We really have to watch what we eat and drink during this stage of life.
