Saw my first James Brown Show in KC in 1965, shows back then were about four hours...saw eight to nine shows in between, and last performance in Sept, 2006, just three months before he passed on Christmas morning. Still hard to imagine how he did it so well, through the hard times and the good...Pure Genius.

There are SO many things to love about this particular James Brown classic. There’s a kind of dissonance in the main refrain with the horns, that just cuts to the core - Love it!! And that trilling note that hangs there for like 30 seconds, almost Brian Eno-ish... so perfect in this funky groove. This is the first song I ever bought with my own money age 11 or so, 1972 or thereabouts, a 45. Wish I still had it. Long lost probably 40 years ago. Thank the Universe for giving us James Brown!

From 1971 on you just HAD to buy anything James or the JB's put out sight unseen...fortunately I had an after school job where I made just enough $$$ to keep me current in 70's Soul and Funk. Each weekend night the University of Connecticut had a 3-hour 10:00 pm radio show for young black music and my boys in New London, CT had a couple of black music (and other "paraphanalia") shops that I frequented where I would get this shit. Man I love this!!!!

I can’t imagine being old enough to enjoy this when it first came out. JB never topped the original version. Jabo Starks on drums and Fred Thomas on bass is killin this!
This is a track where some of James' classic band had returned to the fold, and they hadn't missed a beat. Fred Wesley was the band director instead of Pee Wee Ellis, and the beats were a bit slower than the late 60s stuff.

From 1971 on you just HAD to buy anything James or the JB's put out sight unseen...fortunately I had an after school job where I made just enough $$$ to keep me current in 70's Soul and Funk. Each weekend night the University of Connecticut had a 3-hour 10:00 pm radio show for young black music and my boys in New London, CT had a couple of black music (and other "paraphanalia") shops that I frequented where I would get this shit. Man I love this!!!!

This is a track where some of James' classic band had returned to the fold, and they hadn't missed a beat. Fred Wesley was the band director instead of Pee Wee Ellis, and the beats were a bit slower than the late 60s stuff.
