  • Incidents of shoplifting in San Francisco have taken a prominent place in both local and national dialogue. Public perception of the crime has been fueled by viral videos, media coverage and the outraged calls of some residents. Yet according to statistics released by the San Francisco Police Department, incidents of reported retail theft are down over the past few years.
So we wanted to know: How has the city been talking about-and addressing-shoplifting over the past 15 years?

Are the reported thefts down because theres less crime, or because people gave up on reporting them when police and prosecutors refuse to do anything about it?

Both. Cite and release with court dates 6 months later. They don't show up and 2 years later they get caught and get no time

So could armed off duty cops that actually intervene when they catch someone stealing. A few hundred big time shoplifters doing five to fifteen in San Quentin or Folsom and the rest would get the message that organized retail theft is not acceptable in California and the risk to their freedom and lives is too much to continue to do it. Chesa Boudin didn't help any when he refused to prosecute most misdemeanors including shoplifting and even felonies like organized retail theft in San Francisco County. I think the chief's "numbers" are going to increase markedly now that there is a prosecutor that will do her job and send these people to prison. Store managers will call the police if they know the prosecutor will prosecute shoplifters/organized retail theft.

I'm going to start off by making two things very clear, I am in no way glorifying or bragging about anything illegal that I did and am surely not proud of any of my actions at all, in fact I'm beyond ashamed which is why what I'm about to say is not easy for me to do even though I'm not ever going to see anyone to read this. I was a drug addict for over 25 years and and proud to say that I've been clean now for over two years. It's been far from easy but worth all of the hard times to get to where I am today. This isn't about by drug addiction this is about how I supported my drug addiction which mainly was by shoplifting San Francisco. I supported my habit in San Francisco for five years from 2016 through 2020. I'm a bit OCD and actually kept a journal of how much I made a month, how many times I was cought, where I went everyday and even my daily average for the month. I did this for the entire four years, I want to say once again I'm not bragging I just want to give an example of what just one person can get away with. I'm not going to go into a month by month details, I'll give you the stats. The worst month I had was June 2017 where I made $825 and the best month I had was December 2019 where I made $2,178. I got the calculator out and did the math before I decided to write this comment and over a four-year period my monthly average was $1244. And have four year. I was caught 62 times, 13 of those at the same Target and nine of them at the same Safeway and six of them at the same Walgreens and several other Walgreens I was caught two or three times. The police were never called not one single time out of all 62 times that I was caught by security, I was just simply told not to come back. I'm not bragging or proud of this I just thought it would be interesting for people to know how bad the problem is when just one person can cause that much damage in 4 years.

Thank you for admitting this and trying to give a new perspective on this situation! That is very brave especially after you stopped doing it. To have the understanding of what you did wrong and admit to it without any pride or ego is a good thing to have. If i were to go by that chief of police “statistics” i would think the situation is only getting better and that is a “fact”. Except that clearly isn’t the case if they barely ever reported you before the pandemic, imagine the thefts nowadays?

@@minecraftgravityguyI agree: this needs to stop. There's no need for a lot of Black people to steal. Just get a job like everyone else. But then, if the shoplifters get arrested in masses, you'll see the BLM movement and people like Ben Crump complain that the government is going after Black people and trying to arrest them. All, I can say is, well, don't shoplift. Instead, work like everyone else.
