- This is a fascinating Channel 4 documentary exploring the academic and community activities of two Community Colleges and one Community Primary School based in Leicester and Leicestershire during 1986.
Four pupils from "Hazel Community Primary School" in Leicester conduct a photographic project examining the workings of two Community Colleges of the time "Moat Community College" in the City of Leicester and and "Castle Donington Community College" now an Academy in the County. They bring back the photos to their school and discuss the things they learnt and observed with their classmates.
The documentary is driven by a most informative and passionate narrative provided by the Senior Team Management leaders of the period. They are;
Pat Clarke - Head Teacher / Community Warden - Hazel Community Primary School
Trevor Riddiough - Vice - Principal ( Community ) - Castle Donington Community College
Paddy Hall - Vice - Principal ( Community ) - Moat Community College
From a Primary School perspective this was an era of no National Curriculum and SATS and certainly no Academy driven models for Education. Information Technology ( IT ) as it was known then was in its infancy with BBC B micros dominating the classroom landscapes.
Despite being now 38 years old the film emphasises the concept of Education being for life and not just up to 16. It documents well the numerous members of the community benefiting from multiple activities that enriched their life’s during this time.
The documentary was filmed during the months of January to March 1986 but only transmitted on Channel 4 on Sunday 21st June 1987.
