  • In the first of a four-part series focussing on Elvis in 1969, I talk about the recording sessions which took place at the American Sound Studio in Memphis in January/February '69 and take a look at various vinyl and CD releases which contain the landmark music produced at those sessions.

    This album got me hooked on Elvis. Somehow stumbled on the Long Black Limousine outtakes on RUclips and his vocal performances recorded alongside the live band are great insights.

      Yes definitely, his vocals during that session are jaw-dropping. There's an edge and a rawness that emerged during the 68 Special and continued at American Sound but would never be heard in quite the same way again

    Hello Sean, another nice video. The 69 sessions are some of my favorites.
    I agree that i never understood why RCA put a photo from VLV on the back of From Memphis. RCA usually packaged the albums terribly i think.
    So yes the Memphis Anthology was my go to also back in the early 2000s.
    You did a nice presentation my friend. I always look forward to your videos.

      About the VLV photo used on the back cover -- RCA & Colonel Parker fooled us back in 1969. Most buyers of that album (at the time) didn't realize that it was a stock photo from the VLV photo session 6 years earlier. Hindsight is always so easy.

    Great video. If only they had included Suspicious Minds and Kentucky Rain on From Elvis in Memphis it would have been a much bigger album. Incredibly, the album has not been certified platinum in America, which I find very hard to believe.

      Thanks Steve, yes agree that those 2 tracks would have improved it's success, but what would you have left off at their expense? Crazy that it hasn't achieved platinum status in the US!

      The final overdubs for "Suspicious Minds" had not yet been completed at the time the "From Elvis in Memphis" was released, and the RCA executives knew they wanted to save those 2 songs for future single releases.

      @@Allen-vl7zq I was never a fan of the fad in, fade out gimmick used at the end of Suspicious Minds. An unsuccessful attempt to ape Hey Jude IMHO

      @@sincerelyelvispresley ... "unsuccessful"?? Suspicious Minds was a #1 hit on its own merit for Elvis. It would've never been a single or a hit if it had been included first on the From Elvis in Memphis album.

      @sincerelyelvispresley  3 месяца назад +1

      @Allen-vl7zq 🤣 not that the single or, indeed, song itself was unsuccessful, but the attempt to ape The Beatles by fading it out and in again was. Didn't need it

    Great collection, Sean. I seem to remember reading that RCA only had the photos that Parker gave them for the sleeves, and he didn't give them that many. Perhaps that's why the Viva Las Vegas-era photo appears on the back cover of From Elvis in Memphis.

    • @sincerelyelvispresley
      @sincerelyelvispresley  3 месяца назад

      Thanks David 👍🏻 The rear of the album would have looked so much more relevant to the time period had they chosen a shot from the photo session used on the Suspicious Minds single cover. Parker, what can you say?

    • @Allen-vl7zq
      @Allen-vl7zq 3 месяца назад +1

      Hi David! Surely several photos from June of '68 were available that would've worked better than a 6 yr. old pic. Oh well... At the time, not many fans were complaining anyway. They were too busy enjoying the music on the LP.

    Hi Sean! Your cd of "American Crown Jewels" is surely a copy 22:19 of a bootleg because the original bootleg cd was light blue with pink lettering, and it came with an 8-page booklet featuring a photo inside of Elvis with Barbara McNair and Mahalia Jackson on the movie set of "Change Of Habit".

    • @sincerelyelvispresley
      @sincerelyelvispresley  3 месяца назад

      Hi! That's interesting, thanks for letting me know. The first copy of that I owned was around the mid-2000s and it was the same as the one I have now. The Elvis On CD site lists 3 versions and does say that the first one came with a booklet, but all 3 discs it shows appear to be white and blue

    Hi Sean, it was great to discover your channel and I have enjoyed all the videos. I think I spent about £200 on books I hadn’t heard of as a result of your recommendations! I recently bought the two big TTWII sets - rehearsals and shows and I’d really be interested to hear your views on TTWII releases. I’ve also just bought the Amiga On Tour set to go with the recent official box and hope you will do something on those as well. I’m in Norfolk so not too far from you?

      Hi, great to hear from you, and happy and a tad guilty at the same time - happy that I've been able to introduce you to some new things, but guilty that it's hit your bank balance quite so heavily, but hopefully worth it 🙂 The TTWII episodes are recorded and will air in September. I'll definitely be taking about the Amiga set when I get to 1972, which on the current schedule will probably be uploaded around October time. We love Norfolk, it's about 55 miles from us to Hunstanton, in fact we often talk of retiring to the Norfolk coast!

      Simple answer -- Because the RCA Victor executives knew they were gonna release two full albums of Elvis' January/February Memphis sessions, so they wanted to save an uptempo/rhythm song (Stranger in My Own Home Town) for the second album... "Back in Memphis", which was originally part of the 2-LP set "From Memphis to Vegas/From Vegas to Memphis". The "From Elvis in Memphis" album already contained 4 uptempo/rhythm tracks...
