I'm an 80s baby and my memory of this song is always being woken up by it in the morning because my dad would have it playing loudly after he finished his night shift. For some reason, for the last 40 years, i will occasionally have this song play in my head whenever i wake up in the morning, as if it's been etched into my head from childhood. Well i woke this morning with it my head again but i just had the urge to figure out what the hell this song was even from. I started to doubt it was even real. WELL I FOUND IT. THANKS FOR POSTING!!! lol
Just 23 old, life was good, the 80s was MAGNIFICENT. My adoring Gran, whilst in Germany used to send me letters and used to write "Its a Good Morning Britain here". R.I.P. Gran, this brings back memories, thank you.
I am a 2010 kid and am jealous you got to listen to this song in your childhood. No worries though, I am going to add it to my play list. What a masterpiece, this is the best TV theme of all time.
Mid-80s. Cold, frosty February mornings. Rice Krispies with a toy in the bag. Milk from the doorstep (glass bottles with foil tops, birds had usually pecked a hole in the tops). And this tune coming from the TV.
Something about this is so special… life was indeed simpler back in those times. It’s said often but is genuinely true. Nothing else to watch on TV this time of day apart from this and BBC breakfast time. Both were compulsive viewing and I alternated BBC and ITV back in the day!
Dad was in the Army and spent most of my childhood posted to Germany, so that's where I did a lot of growing up until I was 13. However, between 1984 and 1986 we lived in Camberley outside London and I distinctly remember getting up early at a 5 or 6 years old to watch the cartoons on TV-AM. Hearing this had awoken those memories of snuggling into the cushions on the couch in the living room in a fetal position, my hands keeping warm between my thighs, and listening to this tune while the show was not yet started. Wow. Thanks for uploading it.
I haven't heard this since I was a child and yet I can still remember some of the imagines - of pigeons flying, parachutists, people on a boat. I also remember that there was an egg in an egg cup with the year written on it! Funny what's stuck in my brain. I really like this tune - it's quite dramatic and modern.
I was only 0 when this started up and must be one of the first things I ever saw on TV along with the Ceefax pages. Pretty much where it all began for me. The good old 80s.
Why does this epic piece not have more widespread love? It is utterly outstanding. It is the quintessential call and answer anthem… have you guys tried sitting with a bottle of nitrites with this on LOUD? I need to LSD to this piece.
I am jealous of the people who got to listen to this as a kid. Since I am a 2010 kid I never knew about it until quite literally today. It is on my playlist now.
Its a nice little feel good tune in its own right, but thats what the 80s were about, feel good. The colour and decadence and culture of the time was all about confidence and feel good.
miss this theme so much... getting ready for school whilst watching this guessing which presenter was going to be first on?? Frost, Owen, Kelly or Diamond
Even if the programmes themselves were execrable (and they were), this was always a great theme. Which is why it outlasted all the management and output changes until the end. Breakfast Time's theme was also excellent, but a bit staid.
To be fair, our memories of the 1980s must be tempered by recalling the high unemployment, miner's strike, AIDS, nuclear tensions etc. But from my frame of reference, they were perfect.
@@theaethelred3427 The more I think about it the more the tune goes through my head...Jeff Wayne is a musical genius! Apparently has over 3000 jingles to his name!
@@Sterlingjob I don't know much about him apart from War of the Worlds. He's certainly a genius. As for this tune, it's much better at its original tempo. It's a beautifully optimistic piece of music. I've never been much of a fan of television but this was always a guilty pleasure in the mornings - I would have been about 13 when TV-am launched.
The quality of the strings make me think Fairlight, I don't see what else could have got that close in 1982/3. As for the drums an Oberheim DMX or Linn would be my first guesses.
@@jane1975 There wouldn't have been, as it wasn't regional and therefore wouldn't have to announce themselves any other way than with this majestic theme.
Absolutely years ago a site called PP Meldrum (A quick look sees that it, surprisingly, still exists.) hosted fairly high quality full versions of TV-am's GMB and Daybreak themes. Possibly still on there, but you have to register to see. Can't remember my login details, it's been a very long time since I last visited there.

This takes me back to the crazy days of my childhood.
Oh to have a time machine I'd go back to the 1980s and before like a shot
Brilliant song on its own merit and brings back so many memories

The sound of waking up for school in the 80’s!

I would seriously buy this on vinyl, brings back loads of memories from my childhood.

Jeff Wayne of War of the Worlds wrote it
I feel a surge of energy whenever I listen to this. Fantastic piece of music.
me 2 ....Maybe it was done deliberately because it was a early morning show
The short version of the theme is in the key of E major which is very good for an uplifting feel.
Just beautiful . Hope and optimism in a wonderful theme.
Sounds as good today, as it did on the first Day of Transmission in 1983.
No Xbox or Playstation on this Planet will ever beat my Childhood.

I can almost taste the milk and cornflakes..

TV am the best breakfast tv show of all time I miss it terribly so much better GM TV Daybreak and so called Good Morning Britain never being has TV am
What a banger
100 times better than the new Good Morning Britain theme tune.
Synth pan pipes....brilliant absolutely crackin' track.
Awesome sound
Back when Britain was GREAT.
miss this theme so much... getting ready for school whilst watching this guessing which presenter was going to be first on?? Frost, Owen, Kelly or Diamond
Have it as me ring tone
Happy Birthday
This is epic… who wrote this? It’s nuts.
Jeff Wayne - of War Of The Worlds fame!
@Cricket Explained Wasn't that a programme called "The big match"? Theme was 'called Jubilation'

Loved Anna Ford and Angela Rippon less than subtle digs at the management

There must be a dance remix of this tune?!
TV-am was never later GMTV. They were separate companies.
From the age of 12 3/4's up, this was my morning. Did not watch anything else. A bit of popeye the sailor before going to get the train to school.
Has a Jeff’s Wayne feel to it
That would be because it is Jeff Wayne. I only found this out recently myself - I've loved it ever since I first heard it nearly 40 years ago.
