This was the first game I ever attended. My 15 year old older sister, who was a Demons supporter took me, a one-eyed Hawks supporter. I was 12. I'd forgotten what a mud heap Glenferrie oval was that day.
FUN FACT - This was a very famous match. Melb won because of the Mann goal but if he had missed and the Demons lost they would have missed the finals instead of winning the flag !! Great footage - had never seen it. Great to see Alan Joyce too.
And a Hawthorn win would have meant it was they who finished top rather than missing the finals in fifth. Come the final round (Rd18) Melbourne could not finish lower than second and subsequently lost by 40pts to 7th placed Footscray.
At 1.28 that wonderful Hassa Mann (Melbourne) goal was almost identical to Richmond's 2020 Dusty Martin's both of which sealed the VFL/AFL Premiership.
the biggest take away from this clip is the actual ground condition. It is simply unbelievable in the modern context, that a league game could be played on such a surface. Later in time, St Kilda showed learnings of history, by presenting the Moorabbin Oval with a small quagmire around the middle of the ground, when nullification of more skilfull teams was required. The visitors might also expect cold showers at the end of the game...
Skill isn't a factor in the modern game anyway due to the mindless running they have to do. Saints were notorious in the 80s for presenting quagmires when there hadn't been any rain for a month, but if it had been raining then all grounds were affected, particularly mid-winter.

Ummm... I don't think they went backwards once.... The modern game is great if you like a rugby / basketball hybrid game.... It was a players game not a coaches game or umpires game.... Didn't need the approval of their mates , THEY did it !!!!

How many of the VFL players in this 1964 VFL match are sadly no longer with us?
I was coached by Hassa Mann at Eltham FC 1982-83
Awesome, what was he like as coach?

The camera work in 1964 with only a few cameras is as good as they do now with heaps of cameras.
Everything about "modern" game is fluff...
I would have been at that match...all my childhood Hawks heroes!
The ump still bounced down even though it was a bog hole .
The sooks wouldn't play on a surface like that these days

Won't see any drop kicks on this ground.

Shocking ground conditions, kick to a pack mentality, no strategic plan. Thank God for modern day football!
Really? I see 20 goals scored in this match played on a quagmire! In modern day football I see 12 goals scored in matches played on bowling greens.
Football was destroyed when the clubs ceded their autonomy to The Commission.
It's very easy to say that 60 years later.
