Just found this gem and discovered it’s about a 20 minute drive from a long time friend of mine. Road trip! 10/24 update, mission accomplished. It was awesome!
We're on vacation from work this week. We left the kids behind and are driving down from North Columbus. Ohio is the heart of it all because we still got Rax.
LOL. I did eat at Rax 2x this week at it's as delicious as ever. Turned a couple of newbies on to it also, they thought it was like 3 levels above Arby's.
I live in Columbus now, where they have a Rax in Circleville and Lancaster. (The Lancaster location was used for this episode.) The Lancaster location did admit that they had an increase in business with people from Western PA after this episode aired.
Most of them are in southwestern Ohio, so if you live elsewhere in the state, I wouldn't be surprised. We lost our last Pittsburgh area Rax like 15 years ago, and there are only 8 left. The 6 in Ohio, one in Kentucky, and one near Chicago.
3 years ago( which is about the time this video came out coincidentally), i was driving from to Columbus Zoo back to WV and actually passed the Lancaster exit with my wife and kids and saw the sign for it. I seriously demanded we go in there but my wife raised hell and the kids always side with her. Came back to Wv empty handed and it hurts worse since my town lost their Rax back the very early 90s.
Being from the Pittsburgh area I just love watching these episodes. Back in the late 70's early 80's here was a Rax about ten minutes walking distance from my house in Duquesne, it was right across the street from Kennywood parking lot. I visited that Rax quite a bit!
I actually laughed out loud when they got to their destination! My sister is on vacation and I'm sending this to her. We both worked at Rax on Baum Blvd and it was such a fun place to work (except for one sucky manager)! My sister actually got robbed one night and slammed the cash register drawer on the robber's hand then locked herself in the manager's office! Hilarious episode!
Hey pittsburgh dad you met my parents Blake and Chris Hagerty. You wrote the signature that I should have been there n'at on your picture. Could you please do a video on "dad listens to the police scanner"?
Sadly I live in Ohio, but life long Steelers fan!! Since watching this video about a year ago, I've been wanting to go! I work way too much to make the 4hr round trip drive any other time... but!! 25th anniversary vacation next week puts us within 45min of Rax!! Gonna have to wait until we're back on our way home.... but, thank God for this video because we're hitting Rax on the way home!!! Thanks Pittsburgh Dad!!!
I live down the street from that Rax and you were probably the second customer they had all day. One of the triumvirate of Lancaster icons. Rax, Sherman and Tackleberry from Police Academy.
That's incredible! I literally shouted when you got to Rax's, I just researched if these were even still in existence a few months ago and yinz beat me to the pilgrimage haha totally sat the "greenhouse", had one in Gilbertsville PA that is now a Dairy Queen unfortunately. Always loved Rax's and their Gator Bottles with flex straws, now there's a collector's item
I miss the Rax that used to be on the north side. There is a subway where that glorious place once stood. Imagine, stopping and getting some Rax before the steelers game. Brings a tear to my eye
This was too funny. I was LMAO when he reached his destination. (I'm not tellin' where they went n'at. Watch it for yourself.) Thanks Pittsburgh Dad--a winner!
I hear ya on that one. I remember going down I-70 and seeing the huge Big Boy sign before it became Perkins. I grew up in Moundsville and miss their Rax and Elby’s Big Boy. Big Boy is now a car dealership and Rax is now a Gumby’s Cigarette and Beer World.
Spit beer out my nose when you pulled into the RAX parking lot. I was sure you were headed to Canton. This was hilarious!! Twisty fries move was gold. Thanks for the laughs tonight. Needed it !
If this is the Rax in Lancaster Ohio we also have a Giant Eagle which is a Pittsburgh based grocery store and alot of Steelers fans here too, there are Pittsburgh connections here in Lancaster Ohio
Hey pittsburgh dad you met my parents Blake and Chris Hagerty. You wrote the signature that I should have been there n'at on your picture. Could you please do a video on "dad listens to the police scanner"?
yes!!! please do a police scanner video that would have m in tears laughing .. "uhhh I bet those hot topic kids are breaking into the school again!.. mandy you better not be hanging out with them .. I swear i'll cancel Christmas!" lmfao
Good ol Lancaster ohio. This rax is like a time machine to the early 90s. Remember going through the drive thru here about 10 years ago with a buddy and he paying with some buds for our meal..lmao
RIP to the Greensburg Rax, inevitably consumed by the Subway it decided to share space with, as is the fate that must befall all things. Big Boy too, while we're at it. At least we still have Hoss's
I miss Rax.....when I was a kid we used to go to the Murrysville, PA location after church for lunch. Yummy roast beef sandwiches. When I occasionally got the salad bar I also liked the hot pasta. :-D
Pittsburgh Dad I totally UNDERSTAND. When I was a kid we had a Rax with the buffet. The buffet even had extra meat with no extra charge. I believe there was one in northern Kentucky that was 24hrs with a buffet.
@Teemo Kardell As Stevie Ray Vaughn once said, That's A Cold Shot😬 Ohio is a big state. Cleveland/Akron sucks sh#t, but some of a smaller cities and rural areas are decent places to live. Lots of Steelers fans/Pittsburghese spoken around East Liverpool/Steubenville area, but lower taxes than PA.
In Ohio go to a place called Geneva on the lake, Ohio. It is right in lake Eire and it is like straight out of the past in some cases. A lot of Pittsburgers will go there on a "Vacation" it is actually great there. Get a creamstick and eddys burger while there
Cmacpride1 Geneva on the lake is awesome! My husband and I stayed there for a few days and went wine tasting, and i loved the downtown area! The cute antique shops and the old fashioned soda fountain shop! Beautiful place! Can't wait to go back :)
choirkitty I've been going there for years. This was actually the first year I went to the soda fountain. You always find something new every year. If you can try to stay at the lodge once to experience everything they have there

I found this information in Wikepedia, "Rax Roast Beef is a regional U.S. fast food restaurant chain specializing in roast beef sandwiches. The company is based in Ironton, Ohio......Once a major player in the fast food industry, Rax has extensively scaled down its operations since its peak in the 1980s. At its peak in the 1980s, the Rax chain had grown to 504 locations in 38 states along with two restaurants in Guatemala, and two restaurants in Canada. The Canadian locations were in Lethbridge and Red Deer, Alberta......The last Rax in Indiana closed in 2011. By February 2015, there were 15 locations in Illinois, Kentucky, and Ohio, and West Virginia. The last Rax in West Virginia closed in 2016 and the number of locations declined to eight by March 2016. Before 2017, at least two Long John Silver's locations (both in Ohio, in Georgetown and West Union) added smaller Rax menus. Both locations have since shut down."
I'm just gonna say, him telling the kids he was gonna drive past something on the way home .... my entire childhood was based off the promise of my dad driving past something we loved. 😂😂
I feel I should clarify. The address I provided was the Rax nearest to Pittsburgh. I don't know if it is the one in the video. I know it's sad that I had to clarify that, but this is the internet.
FaithTheSlayer it's not the one in Circleville Ohio I was there in May it was a slight detour on my trip but worth it www.raxroastbeef.com/locations.html
It is the Lancaster one, you can see an Advanced Auto Parts across the street, and the Lancaster one has one across the street. You can also see the "greened out" salad bar sign on Google.
bassman34516 OMGOSH! I thought I was the only 1 on here who remember Winkey's on Steubenvilllike pike in Crafton hen I was little! It's now Thornburg Autoll
I used to work at a RAX restaurant in Oregon in the 80's when I was in high school. I remember at the time not being able to afford eating there. I was a poor kid so I stuck with McDonalds and Taco Bell when I could afford to eat out. RAX was on the high end of fast food pricing at the time. I did enjoy the food when I was able to get a discount on it while working there.
Whoa, wait, Pittsbugh Dad would never be driving a Honda. He needs to put a sticky note over that steering wheel emblem and draw in either the Ford or Chevy emblem. You can only purchase an import once you leave Pittsburgh.
Hahahahahahahaha! I love these videos! I remember there being a Rax in Bethel Park when I was very small and had just moved there. I honestly can't remember if we ate there or not, but I probably would've liked it as I love roast beef sandwiches. The Rax eventually became a Taco Bell. I also love the old Wendy's newspaper tables reference because my mom would take me to the Wendy's across from where we lived every now and then for a burger. Those tables were a little creepy to me when I was little, but I miss them now. That Wendy's had a greenhouse and everything. I remember I busted a glass ashtray there by accident. That's how long ago it was: there was a smoking section. Greenhouses have really gone poof on restaurants. Oh, well. Fast food evolves all the time. Shoot, I've read that fast food places didn't even have spaces to sit and eat until the late 60's. Now we need a slab of granite in there, apparently. I'm glad there's at least one Rax about, even if it isn't in Pittsburgh. Thanks, Pittsburgh Dad!

We're on vacation from work this week. We left the kids behind and are driving down from North Columbus.
Ohio is the heart of it all because we still got Rax.
How wild would it be if Rax makes a comeback now because of this episode
It didn't.
LOL. I did eat at Rax 2x this week at it's as delicious as ever. Turned a couple of newbies on to it also, they thought it was like 3 levels above Arby's.
it kinda is having it, i guess? Vlogbrothers also did a video about it which made me investigate more, and here i am
There is an open Rax in my town, I live in Ohio
I live in Columbus now, where they have a Rax in Circleville and Lancaster. (The Lancaster location was used for this episode.) The Lancaster location did admit that they had an increase in business with people from Western PA after this episode aired.
A few years ago my friend and I made the same pilgrimage. Love ya Rax!
“Christmas shopping!? DONE!” We should all be so blessed to receive a RAX RB this Christmas.
We had a Rax on Route 8 in Richland Twp., about one quarter of a mile south of exit 4 on the PA Turnpike. Miss that place!
When my wife and I saw this LY, it inspired us in Columbus to drive down to the Circleville one. It was awesome, delicious nostalgia.
I am totally doing this! I haven't had RAX since I was a kid. I didn't know they were still around'!
drift689 I live in Ohio and I've never seen a Rax!

YES! One of your best episodes! Amazing! I've not been to a Rax since 1985!
Gonna drive by Geauga Lake, where it used to be. Lol.

I just found out a "Rax" existed. Not sure what it is, but I think I like it.
evangriffey71 Rub it in youngey LOL!
I don't know what RAX is either and I'm 31. I live in North Dakota though. We, uh, we got stuff and things.
evangriffey71 it's pretty much Arby's I used to go here all the time as a kid.
evangriffey71 if Pittsburgh Dad likes it I like it.
It was delicious, I always got the roast beef mushroom melt it was so damn good
Wow!!! I used to work at a Rax here in Florida when I was 17 yrs old!! Loved the Jamocha shake!!!
YES! YES!! If you live in Pittsburgh, PA, and you don't go do this at least once, you are not a true Pittsburgher!
Did yinz really drive all the way out to Ohio just to shoot in a Rax's parking lot?
You mean, "Did we really drive all the way out to Ohio for a Rax chocolate chip milkshake?" Yes we did.
Hey pittsburgh dad you met my parents Blake and Chris Hagerty. You wrote the signature that I should have been there n'at on your picture. Could you please do a video on "dad listens to the police scanner"?
You could make it say something about the police looking for jeffy:)
You could have saved yourself 4 hours and came to Blair County for a Rax there's one in Roaring Spring.
Brandon Hickey I bent they went in
Sadly I live in Ohio, but life long Steelers fan!! Since watching this video about a year ago, I've been wanting to go!

Fantastic

We use to have Rax here in wheeling WV but almost everything is gone! We lost our long johns also and our Hardee's! Just McDonald's and Wendy's now

Greetings from Joliet, Illinois. We have a Rax, I believe the only one in the state.
Yeah, and my family will be travelling from MN to eat there!

My hometown. I used to live in a house that sat where advanced auto parts is now. Thanks for the memory
When I went to Marshall, I would often take the 30-minute drive up the Ohio River to Ironton to go the Rax there. Always worth it.

Someday I hope to make the pilgrimage to Rax.
I miss Rax.....when I was a kid we used to go to the Murrysville, PA location after church for lunch. Yummy roast beef sandwiches. When I occasionally got the salad bar I also liked the hot pasta. :-D

A nice drive in the country is west on 22 from Steubenville. Take it all the way until it meets 70. Then just take interstate back to Burgh.
There used to be a Rax up by Kennywood, just past the big parking lot.
