- Work continues in the home garden. This week I show you the completed garden arch and plant bare-root roses at its sides.
Bare root roses are plants sent with bare roots. They'll come in the autumn and winter and be dormant. You can plant them at any time, except during a really deep freeze.
The rose variety I chose is called Generous Gardener from David Austin Roses. This type is a climbing rose with fragrant old rose scent and pale pink petals. What I especially like about them is that they produce beautiful hips that I'll be able to harvest for tea next autumn.
Planting bare root roses begins with soaking the plants in water, working manure into the soil, and planting along with mycorrhizal fungi. These pellets help to create bigger and better root systems, naturally.
Question for you: Are you planting roses this autumn? If so, what varieties do you have planned and have already growing in your garden?

I love roses. Nothing is more rewarding than to go out and pick your own and bring them inside for a fragrent decoration. My wife always appreciates it. I'm sure they will grow beautifully for you.

It would be great to see an updated video on how the roses are doing. Thank you for your video
Nice one! I like that you picked the beautiful pink ones!
They’ll have loads of petals too. I can’t wait to see them bloom :)
I cant wait to see the Rose's grow!!! Have you started thinking of irrigation as you start planting? ... seeing you have to pour water into your can made me realize it's going to be a chore especially with perimeter garden and the 4 long raised boxes! Garden Answer covers their irrigation process and seems affordable and flexiable for any garden. I think her recent video reviewed the process as she planted hydrangeas. But theres specific videos from her too. ....the inset pics of the roses looks beautiful! Hope watering isnt too arduous.
You selected such a lovely rose! I can't wait to see it grow and bloom. If you do get any rose hips next year, please consider a video to show us how you harvest them to make tea. Thanks!
Looks great! I can’t wait to see as they grow. I really like your arch. I need to get a new one soon because mine is over 16 years old and is falling apart. It won’t even stand up good anymore.
Excited to see the roses grow. Thanks for sharing
I’m super excited about seeing you build your new planting beds as well as watching your roses grow and bloom. I’ve been looking for roses to plant in my garden, I think you have persuaded me to buy “The generous gardener” thank you so much for all the info. ❤️
🌸I’m so excited to see the growth and excited to plant my own David Austin’s.🌸
I am waiting for your roses with you, thanks for sharing, I will plant some roses for my garden.
Is there an update on how the roses have grown 🌹
I was so hoping you would buy this type of climbing rose! Wish I could get David Austin roses easier. In CA I have to order them online & sometimes the prices are outrageous. I’ve got quite a few roses. Didn’t buy any this year. Usually I go for the disease resistant, heavily scented, double petaled varieties that bees can still pollinate. I do plan on purchasing an old standard climbing rose called “Rose New Dawn” next year to climb up my patio gazebo. Probably get 2 of them to cover 2 sides of it. It’s gorgeous w/that vintage, old English look & is supposed to be a prolific, heavily scented bloomer. So excited to watch your garden transformation! Thanks again for sharing it w/us!
Beautiful. I look forward to learning how to care for a climbing rose.
I am glad you got your roses planted I well be looking ford ward to seeing how well they grow for you I used to grow the George burn rose It was a white rose with red streaks through It
Your roses will look beautiful on the arch, I am excited for you. :-)
I am loving the progress you're making on the new house!
I hope you continue to do little videos like this project over the winter
I’m grateful for the mild climate here. Have you had your first snow yet in Chicago?
@@Lovelygreens It has snowed!! I need to get my garlic in the ground soon--I hope it's not too late!
@@awilderose A lot of people in the US plant their garlic in early spring. You've definitely got time :)
Rose hip tea 🍵 hummmm
Love David Austin! I have 'Gentle Hermione' and she has been a glorious beauty for years now.
I've been eyeing the David Austin website for a few weeks now, and you selected the same exact rose I keep going back to. That is one pretty thing - ey?! I just planted 6 rose shrubs parallel to the drive way (both sides) from the Brindabella nursery in Australia: pastel pink, fuschia and lipstick red. They are about a foot and a half tall now and they are full of big fluffy roses already - strong old rose perfume. Check 'em out! Happy holidays and I hope you get to enjoy your generous gardeners very soon. I am going to purchase a single potted one to try and paint part of my mother's house front with roses. I just need to make up my darn mind and press that purchase button already 😂 Cheers!
ooh yasss darling tonight im gonna planting some yellow climbing roses and a rangoon creeper , im planning for them trailing on my fence i wanna have a living flowering house fence wish me luck darling xx from indonesia
I love roses. You are so fortunate to have great roses, David Austin Roses! I can't wait to see them in the late spring. I am thinking about getting one too! Thanks for sharing!
going to be so lovely
Whow.. I planted weeds in. Mine lol
DA roses come with a 5 year guarantee too. We love them here in the UK
Your accent is so interesting-
American - Irish - Canadian?
A mix of all three. What zone are you in?
I love roses but they are though to grow here.
Great work keep it going from Ronan
600th like. 👍
Hi, Tanya! I know that you have a new garden now, but were you still enjoying The Generous Gardener roses before you moved? Or would you pick another variety if you were to put climbing roses in your new garden?
So much so that I dug them up and brought them with :)
Nice. I just purchased one. Can u post an update for the rose:) thanks in advance
They’re doing great! They grew about 3 feet last year and are beginning to twine around the arch. You can see them in my home garden videos from 2019
@@Lovelygreens thank you!
Visited the DA stand at a garden show, the customer service was so awful, I never purchased from them again.
You received your bare root roses so early! I won't be receiving mine until next spring. Even when I lived in a zone 8 I never received them earlier than January or February. Maybe it's a States thing....
I live in Europe in zone 6 and I will receive mine by the end of the week. You can order bareroot roses early in the autumn or at end of winter/beginning of spring.
How to make rose hip tea? I have one rose with lovely hips at the moment and would love to try hip,s tea. Thank you!
Love your videos! :)
Hello there.
I made a heap of rosehip syrup in october 2013 and in december was diagnosed with diabetes lol just my luck ..so i make rosehip tea now intead from a wild rose i have. Good vid 👍
In English its Valeri Petrovski my name. Try Elizabeth glamis rose bush.. if it still exists it is fab. Mine was 70 yrs old i let it go wild and that is the one i get my rosehips from.
I have the same bucket from B&Q. Please let us know what the rose is like now.
Look at today’s post on my Instagram account :)
You have mound the soil to conform to the root shape
I really like that arbor. Did you make it, or where did you buy it?
Hi.. I know this tread is old..but, i need to asked abt something.. How long does 'bare root rose' survived during 'postage''.. im expecting mine.. but it been more than 7 day already..
They'll be fine for some time, don't worry. The plants aren't growing now so have no leaves. They're also packed in plastic bags that keep them moist.
Where did u buy them fromm
