Tips on planting Bare Root Roses 'Generous Gardener' from David Austin Roses

  • Work continues in the home garden. This week I show you the completed garden arch and plant bare-root roses at its sides.
Bare root roses are plants sent with bare roots. They'll come in the autumn and winter and be dormant. You can plant them at any time, except during a really deep freeze.
The rose variety I chose is called Generous Gardener from David Austin Roses. This type is a climbing rose with fragrant old rose scent and pale pink petals. What I especially like about them is that they produce beautiful hips that I'll be able to harvest for tea next autumn.
Planting bare root roses begins with soaking the plants in water, working manure into the soil, and planting along with mycorrhizal fungi. These pellets help to create bigger and better root systems, naturally.
Question for you: Are you planting roses this autumn? If so, what varieties do you have planned and have already growing in your garden?

I cant wait to see the Rose's grow!!! Have you started thinking of irrigation as you start planting? ... seeing you have to pour water into your can made me realize it's going to be a chore especially with perimeter garden and the 4 long raised boxes! Garden Answer covers their irrigation process and seems affordable and flexiable for any garden. I think her recent video reviewed the process as she planted hydrangeas. But theres specific videos from her too. ....the inset pics of the roses looks beautiful! Hope watering isnt too arduous.

I was so hoping you would buy this type of climbing rose! Wish I could get David Austin roses easier. In CA I have to order them online & sometimes the prices are outrageous. I’ve got quite a few roses. Didn’t buy any this year. Usually I go for the disease resistant, heavily scented, double petaled varieties that bees can still pollinate. I do plan on purchasing an old standard climbing rose called “Rose New Dawn” next year to climb up my patio gazebo. Probably get 2 of them to cover 2 sides of it. It’s gorgeous w/that vintage, old English look & is supposed to be a prolific, heavily scented bloomer. So excited to watch your garden transformation! Thanks again for sharing it w/us!

I've been eyeing the David Austin website for a few weeks now, and you selected the same exact rose I keep going back to. That is one pretty thing - ey?! I just planted 6 rose shrubs parallel to the drive way (both sides) from the Brindabella nursery in Australia: pastel pink, fuschia and lipstick red. They are about a foot and a half tall now and they are full of big fluffy roses already - strong old rose perfume. Check 'em out! Happy holidays and I hope you get to enjoy your generous gardeners very soon. I am going to purchase a single potted one to try and paint part of my mother's house front with roses. I just need to make up my darn mind and press that purchase button already 😂 Cheers!
