"Let's just call it a Ghost Cat, Walter Mitty."
I love this line even more once you see what the picture was at the end of the movie. No one noticed Walter, or his work, earlier in the film when that picture was taken, but then again, *beautiful things don't ask for attention.*

Movie criticism seems arbitrary sometimes. I seem to remember that some critics complained about the fact that it was a remake, and that they couldn’t really see what warranted it. Then again, A Star Is Born is remade a third time and every critic loves it, even though it hardly revolutionised the original story. A good movie is a good movie.

I like the way they tell the story through Walter's appearance, makeup and lighting; in the beginning he looks older, grey haired, wearing grey, pale face... and as soon as he starts his journey he starts to have more color in his wardrobe and face. By the end he looks so much younger, more vivid face color, dresseses and looks like an adverturer. Very close to his imagined iceclimbing self. But without the sunburn and the hairstyle. And the cheesy sentences.

I did not expect this movie to be so dang heartwarming. I joke about this movie a bit even though I liked it, like when I explain the movie to other people who haven’t seen it I call the movie “Ben Stillers Vanilla sky” or “Scott pilgrim vs adult responsibilities”.
I had seen the original film and read the short story years ago and this is so well done, it’s new while staying in touch with the stuff that came before.
Thanks for the video James, take care.

And also such an unexpected thing. I love that the whole film is basically proving to us why he deserves that and yet the entire time we're convinced it's some incredible nature shot. It's really well done. It's sometimes hard to explain to people why this film is so good. It's not really a traditional main stream film. Has much more of a film festival/independent feel to it, but it works so beautifully.

I love the moment where he doesn't take the picture. So many people today only experience anything cool through the lens of their phone camera now, whether its a concert, or a vista, or whatever. People are so focused on making sure their Insta life looks dope they miss out on living their actual damn lives.
I rarely if ever photograph or record the great moments of my life. I want to be fully in those moments and experience them. This also then allows me to look back on them with the hazy fondness of nostalgia and keep those moments legendary in my mind. No picture can ever look as beautiful as my imperfect memory of something.

There is this moment with Kristen Wiig's character that is just so at-the-heart of this beautiful film. When on stage in the bar dedicating the song to Walter, she tilts her head just slightly after saying "...he knows why." It's just this personal moment between two people as if to say, yeah, I can see you, and you can see me. Ugh, I'm sure a more articulate person could pinpoint it better, but oh well, it's still a massively beautiful and subtle moment.

Many comedic performers are actually brilliant actors. It’s genuinely hard work to make people laugh, but people seem to overlook them, seeing their work as frivolous. You get amazing performances from people like Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, and Ben Stiller, because the skills and talent are there, they just get overlooked often.

When you look at it though the lense of mental health it’s super positive making something for yourself and being proactive, it’s a really positive look on masculinity.
Other films like Fight Club, American Animals or Joker have have some parallels but in a much more negative spin, men who are struggling mentally, have no where to go in life just waiting for something to happen and then finding a negative outlet but Walter Mitty finds the beauty in life, it’s really inspiring.

Now you gotta watch the original, with Danny Kaye. Great comedy from the 40's based on James Thurber's short story. Danny Kaye is BRILLIANT, especially in the musical numbers where his unique talent for vocal gymnastics really shines! By the way, very little of either film is in the original short story. That was just about an afternoon that Walter spends doing errands, and how he'd get caught up in glorious daydreams as he goes from store to store picking up the stuff his mom wants. Kaye's film starts with that premise and then branches off into its own amazing, hilarious tale. :)

I read the story of Walter Mitty in high school. I didn't see this movie until 2 days ago and I've gotta say, this is my favorite Ben Stiller movie now. I think this is one of my favorite movies in general. It's a real piece of art.

Fun fact, the words you couldn't understand, 'eyjafjallajökull' was the volcano that erupted in Iceland 2010 and halted all or most of all air traffic around Europe.
And most of the film that was recorded outside of the U.S. was filmed in Iceland. Even the one that was suppose to take place in Afghanistan.
I highly recommend for anyone to travel to Iceland, such and amazing place!!

A stunt double was used for the longer shots of the longboarding scene, but Ben Stiller did the close-ups (with wires attached). Also, the bottom of the longboard says LIFIÐ, which is "Life" in Icelandic.

Okay a few things I don’t see mentioned below. the entire film aside from the city was shot in Iceland including the Afghanistan shots. the red car blue car deal is a reference to red pill blue pill in the matrix. Now the part that I’m qualified for in the language department. the first word you hear in Icelandic, Eyjafjallajökull is just eyja (aye ya) fjalla (feeyat-la) jökull (yuh kut-L) means island mountain glacier and is the name of the volcano that erupted a few years ago irl. Then In the scene with the kids, you’ll here kominn inn I bíll (koe-men in ee beel) (get in the car ‘beint’ added in just means come straight into the car, let’s fuckin go), the longboard itself says ‘Lífið’ (lee-vith) which means Life (ties directly in with the theme / name of the magazine), and when the kids are debating what to do they’re actually talking about how ‘Hann veit ekki hvað eldgos þýðir’ (han vayt eckih kvath eldgoes thee-thir) (‘he doesn’t know what eldgos means’, hilarious once again) and then the two boys say ‘Gera það’ (gare-ah thoth) Which just means ‘do it’. Eldgos obviously means eruption as you now know hahahaha. Hope this helps! /friendlyneighborhoodIcelandicamerican

This movie was the best kept secret from me. It came out and I knew nothing about it and said "fuck it" and gave it a watch strictly because of Ben Stiller. It is now one of my all time favorites. Its just so damn good and the way its shot is just so unique that it makes it stand out.

Favorite film, thanks for reviewing it. Since I first saw this film in the theaters ten years ago I've been to Iceland three times, the last to photograph a volcano (but not from atop a biplane). I bought the movie right here on RUclips and I've watched it so many times I couldn't begin to count.

It’s a great freakin movie man happy you got a chance to see it. It tanked in the box office and it didn’t receive much positive criticism, but it’s one of my favorite movies may even be one of my favorite Ben Stiller movies of all time. I saw this film back in school where I was day dreaming a lot of the time about the life I wanted to be leading, I was so incredibly depressed and internally lonely even when I was around people. I’ve always felt just inadequate in the main dane lifestyle we as a society we’re always leading day by day. Not too much has changed since I’ve been out of school with the day dreaming and depression, but I related a lot to Walter Mitty and the film just really spoke to my spirit. I’m not religious nor have I given up on hope but I do believe I was destined to do something meaningful both for the world and myself. I want to be free.

This is a kind of remake of the 1947 original staring Danny Kaye that is more of light comedy rather than a more realistic tone this is.

This movie is one of may 2 favorite movie, its sensibility touched me on another level, Mitty connected to me like no other character in any other movie characters,
the photo the simple sensitivity has never stopped growing in me. I'm happy that it touched you and hope many more will.
Finally if you want to see the single other movie I like as much as this one: "loving Vincent" aout Vincent Van Gogh

I know this reaction is three years old. You mentioned in this reaction that you like when comedic actors can go outside their "wheelhouse" and do more serious roles. One you didn't mention is Adam Sandler. He seriously deserved some awards consideration for the movie "Reign Over Me". That movie was a gut punch for me. As for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, it's a beautiful movie. May not be a perfect movie, but the cinematography along with the soundtrack that goes with those amazing shots is spectacular. The message the movie promotes is amazing. The ending gets me every time I see this movie. Perfect ending for the movie in my opinion.
