  • Sweden has found a new leak in an undersea pipeline carrying Russian natural gas to the EU.
Denmark and Sweden previously reported gas leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines.
Nato said the incidents were the result of "deliberate, reckless and irresponsible acts of sabotage".
Russia dismissed suggestions that it had attacked its own pipelines as "predictable and stupid".

      1) Russians are under contract to supply certain volume of natural gas to Germany every year and there are billions of $ of penalties in the contracts if they simply turn off the supply from their side. That’s why the whole “turbine maintenance” excuse since July. By blowing up the pipeline, which may take years to repair, they can stop the supply without any penalties.
      2) It’s no coincidence the sabotage occurred the same day Norway-Poland pipeline opened. It’s a not so subtle threat to Western Europe. “We have the capabilities and the will to get to your undersea pipelines, internet cables, power cables, etc.”
      3) Uncertainties spike global energy markets, which means billions $ of more revenue for Russia. They were forced to sell to India/China at a discount since the European sanctions, but by injecting fear into the market, they can neutralize these discounts. Natural gas prices were beginning to decrease as LNG reserves in Europe were getting to 70% full. But now they shot back up and some more.
      4) Putin wants to inflict maximum pain and pressure to Western Europe for this winter, hoping civil dissent in those countries will stop the flow of weapons into Ukraine. The “partial mobilization” which by all reports from Russia is really a full mobilization in disguise, shows how desperate he is. He’s not thinking about what will happen long term, but how to survive the next stage of the war, as civil unrest in Russia is building.

Some European countries needed time to set up alternative supplies of gas, and without that they may have a hard time this winter. So once spring arrives it really doesn't matter, but until then it can cause some hardship. I think people greatly overestimate how much hardship it will cause in those countries, but it will cause some.
In addition the Russians who talk so loudly about cutting off the gas supply completely miscalculate the effect of any hardship on the Western nations; they think hardship will make people give in, when in truth it will make people angry and more determined not to give in. It's a fairly typical Russian idea; we Russians can cope with hardship, "they" can't. Wrong.

A little bit about the "inadmissibility of infrastructure strikes" that the West howled about. To be clear, they are unacceptable if they or their allies are being hit. And if they are, they are very permissible.
For example, Biden considered the destruction of Serbia's infrastructure normal and confessed that back in 1993 he was the one who suggested bombing Belgrade: "I suggested sending American pilots and blowing up all the bridges on the Drina. I offered to deprive them of their oil reserves. I suggested very concrete actions ... I think we should use air strikes much more aggressively," he said in 1994.
The U.S. implemented this plan to the full extent in 1999, if you forget. And they hit critical infrastructure, as well as civilian objects - maternity hospitals, buses with refugees, the Chinese embassy.
Did anyone condemn Biden? Has he become a pariah, a tyrant and a criminal? No, he is sitting on the Washington stove and not giving a damn.
The video shows the very moment when the U.S. drove the residents of Iraq's capital into the Stone Age. Iraq wasn't striking Texas 100 times a week or wiping out Hawaii. It wasn't his fault at all, as it would later become known - the test tube was a fake. And someone was punished for that?

the reason there was no gas being sent was because Russia was pretending that they had to repair turbines. it has since been shown that that was bs. so if russia wants to continue not supplying gas through NS1 without other penalties, then they need another excuse. this is their new excuse.
it also has the benefit of giving them some leverage around repairing it - ie lift some tech sanctions or we can't repair it.
its that not difficult for the operators of a pipeline to blow it up by simply sending a PIG down with the appropriate explosives etc

" @lostsoul4274 they face significant penalties for doing so. they pretended they needed to repair turbines in order to have an excuse to turn off gas. that excuse has been shown to be nonsense and they would have now been required to turn gas supplies on again or face very heavy penalties. because of these explosions, which they are pretending they had nothing to do with, they are effectively turning off supply without facing any penalties.
in addition, they can use it as a negotiating chip by saying that they will only be able to repair the pipeline if some sanctions are lifted."
That being said, USA could in theory also have done it to blame Russia, but I don't really see why they would bother.

Avoid the contract? How can Russia fulfill a contract if it wasn't allowed to? NS2 was ready to operate but the West put sanctions on the pipeline. NS1 needs maintenance, just like every industry has to. So, if NS1 is down, NS2 can still supply and make good on the contract. That would be like having to pay your bank loans, but your bank freezes your transactions, and you get penalized.

    • @trishna_6815

NS 1 did not need maintenance, there was nothing wrong with the turbines. That was an excuse Russia made up to avoid sending any gas to Europe without a penalty for renegging on its NS 1 contract. That fact had been established in courts and now Russia would have had to turn gas back on in NS1 or face consequences. Blowing up the pipeline means they avoid having to fulfil the contract or pay any penalty (they will claim it was force Majeure, out of their control).
Europe only wants the bare minimum gas they absolutely need from Russia, they don't want to pay them any more than is absolutely necessary and are working to become completely independent from Russian energy as soon as they can. Hence, they don't want the Nordstream 2 deal to go ahead. They don't want to pay Russia an extra, and they don't absolutely need that gas now as they've worked out other sources (namely US).
In addition, they get some bargaining power around sanctions, because they can claim they don't have the resources to fix it without lifting of some tech sanctions.
Further, the Russian bots are out in force claiming it is the CIA, or a false flag operation, with the aim of sowing dissent and distrust amongst the populations of the various EU/NATO nations.

“Blowing up the pipeline means they avoid having to fulfill the contract or pay any penalty” - But NS 2 was never operational? Hence your argument is flawed, “they” should’ve blown up NS 1 for that to be an plausible outcome. Beyond that, US LNG is almost 3x the price of Rus LNG. Completely wiping off the US & CIA when the incentive is so obvious, is laughable. Blowing up NS 2 only makes EU less dependable on Rus gas in the long term, and EU obviously more dependent on US gas. Why is it so hard to see? CIA have done fare worse, in a geopolitical context.
Please don’t call me an “Russian bot”, it only exposes your foolishness.

After a year of delays, the Polish commissioned underwater gas pipeline from Norwegian gas fields into Poland was declared operational at a ribbon cutting ceremony.
The next day the pair of out of service gas pipelines NS1 & NS2 suffered 3 explosive ruptures off the coast of the Danish island of Bornholm.
Reports of a US warship operating in that area northeast of Bornholm island, three days prior to the explosions, could point to American operatives as the cause.
Equally possible is that Polish operatives are the likely saboteurs. Poland has been cutoff from Russian gas, and have been buying natural gas via Germany at a hefty premium.
This unfortunate situation cuts off Germany, and makes Poland a major source of Natural Gas for Germany. Unfortunately for Germany the premium will be even higher.
And Poland gets to poke Putin in the eye without losing a single soldier. Priceless for Poland.
Or,..... it could be the USA.

It makes about as much sense as blowing up a hotel full of Russians in Moscow in order to emerge as the hero fighting the "terrorists" in Chechnya. Putin does not care about anything or anyone but himself and staying in power. He blew up the pipeline which will be of no use to him anyway in order to make you think and more importantly make Russians think that there is no way that Russia would blow up it's own pipeline, hence the west did that in an act of terrorism. Convincing Russians to fight is all about creating narratives, that the west is the treat, Ukraine is full of nazis etc. He is desperate and desperate dictators do desperate things. None of his advisors dare say he is wrong. If they do they end up in jail or killed. What we need to worry about is that may use that as a reason to "retaliate" by blowing up the Norwegian pipeline to Poland. Better keep an eye on that one 24/7.

For example, a saboteur might want to make it difficult for Russia to make money when they reopen the pipeline. A saboteur may want to insure that Europe does not become dependent on Russian energy again after the Ukraine issue is resolved, regardless of how it ends. All of that makes much more sense than any reason given for Russia to sabotage their own pipeline.
