  • In the 1996 Omega Dubai Desert Classic, Colin Montgomerie hit a brilliant tournament-winning driver-off-the-deck on the 72nd hole. 23 years on, can Tommy Fleetwood, Rafa Cabrera Bello or Matt Fitzpatrick do the same?

    That was a great piece, I was in the caddie hut in 2010 (The Open) at St Andrews, Colin was in there, a man walked past with his son, saw Colin and tried to come in for an auto graph,security stopped them, Colin jumped up invited them in, they had no pen for the autographs, Colin went to find a pen and signed for the son. From that day to this, I will not hear a word against that man a “True Gent”

Case in point...take Ben Hogan’s win at Merion in 1950 and Justin Rose’s win there in 2013. There are two plaques on the 18th fairway. One from where Hogan hit his final shot on Sunday and one from where Rose hit his. Hogan hit a 1 iron to the green when the hole played 458 yards. Rose hit a 4 iron to the green when the hole played 521 yards.

  • @mattthomas1442
    @mattthomas1442 5 лет назад +7

    I'm surprised Monty still got it that close considering he is A. 23 years older and B. surely doesn't have the same adrenaline pumping for this shot as he did when he originally hit it since that had the tournament on the line. There was basically only a few yards difference in carry between the two shots. Of course I assume they are using a modern ball for this so that could explain why it was so close.

      To be fair- the old ball is probably the only reason it stopped for him. Urethane ain’t got nothing on good old balata as far as spin goes.
      New balls go further, but it’s largely due to reduced spin compared to the old ones.

      Stefan Coetzee More like 20 to 40 yards. The spring effect in clubs these days are the reason they hit it so far in the air. Go look up Nick Faldos Mizuno video where he’s hitting his 7 irons from 1990 to the present. Manufacturers have been tweaking lofts and launch angles for guys to hit it further with no spin.

      @@Drew039 You are missing the point totally. The difference between Fleetwood's 290 yards and 220 yards in the video has never been equal to 20 to 40 yards. And I know all about the COR (coefficient of restitution). There's a limit on the maximum allowed amount, by the way. The reason irons are supposedly carrying further, is because the lie angles have been adjusted by manufacturers who promise more distance - because there is no real standard that must be adhered to. Therefore a 7 iron in Faldo's time is more like an 8 iron today. But we are not talking about irons, are we. We were talking about why Fleetwood hits a new driver 70 to 80 yards further than an old one.

    God is so good. No matter what happens in life, He has a plan better than anything we can imagine. He is working all things out for our good, even when we don’t understand why some things happen the way they do. Don’t lose faith, keep trusting and believing in Him. God isn’t done with you, keep fighting the good fight. Be a blessing to someone today. God bless. Do you know Jesus as your Lord and savior? It’s the best decision you can ever make, and at the end of the day, it’s the ultimate decision we have to make. This life is only temporary. Eternity is forever. Do you know where you will spend eternity? God bless. God is so good.
