    Im 21 years now. I bought this knife when I was in like 6th grade and I used it as primary knife for bushcraft, not as a backup knife.
    That's the most durable knife i've ever used. Just bought a Buck 192 Vanguard, it's a great knife but cant beat the cheap Hultafors for simple tasks like doing feather sticks for starting a fire. I've batoned with this knife more wood than with my axe and it is in great shape!

    The Hultafors heavy duty is a great knife! The handle is longer than the blade, which allows for gloves, bigger hands and increased leverage. Good bang for the buck.

    I love these! It can handle a lot of batoning. I once used one as a wedge when taking a big limb off a tree. I can’t believe how durable it is and how good the blade is for the price. It sharpens really well. I also use an Opinel 8 for finer work.

    @richardhenry1969 Год назад +1

    I personally have the ok4. I absolutely love it. My packs are setup for different things. I have summer setup with carbon steel . An my winter with stainless.
    So my secondary knife is now this Hultafor ok4. I always take at least 2 fixed blades and a folder.
    My experience with Hultafor the edge needed a tuneup. But it’s extremely tougher then I thought.
    Very nice review I really like the orange handle. Don’t know if it’s age or laziness but I like colors that are easy to find when set down.

    G'day Mark, like the handle shape in particular and worth the dough even @ full price I reckon.
    After investing thousands of bucks over the years, It has occurred to me that not everyone wants/needs to up the ante and you can do very well, cutting tool wise, for very little moolah.
    Something like this/Mora, together with, say a Buck 119 and a specific chopper/splitter, Fiskars X7 hatchet, maybe a Condor Parang for example; chuck in a decent folding saw, = a shipload of reliable capability @ a very respectable price; off the top of my head, around 200 - 250 AUD. And perhaps with the exception of the saw, should last a couple of lifetimes with proper use and maintenance.
    Cheers Duke.

      Hello Duke. You make a good point on what do we really need to spend. I started out budget and upgraded, mostly through gifts, then reviews. I really do need to go back and have a discussion on the basics of inexpensive but still quality kit. Thanks for commenting

      @fenrisgrins Год назад +1

      Absolutely agree with you there! I would go Hultafors Craftsman, Opinel 8 or larger, as I love the design. I’m going to have a look at the Buck 119 now, thanks!

      @@fenrisgrins G'day mate, thanks for the reply. Gave away my Opinel 8, just too small for my hands, (L to XL), Love the 9 as a steak knife in particular, but the 10 gets the most pocket time.
      Yeah the 119 is a great knife, can do plenty, but fair to say its no BK-7 for example.
      If you are in the US, I am aware the standard 420 HC version is widely available and very inexpensive. If outside the US, It was actually cheaper, (after currency conversion and shipping), to get it delivered from the US than to acquire one locally in oz. Took about 10 days from DLT Trading if memory serves. Oh yeah, and with the savings, was enough to get a few sticks of stropping compound ........ or perhaps an Opinel. Cheers Duke.

      @@eyeofthetiger4184 Yes! I have a 10 that a friend gave me 26 years ago. It has been farming, cable stripping, and done lots of camping. I took it to West Africa where everyone loved it. Funnily enough, that trip got me into Hultafors knives, as I was looking for something super cheap and durable to take as gifts.

    • @eyeofthetiger4184
      @eyeofthetiger4184 Год назад +1

      @@fenrisgrins Very cool mate, ..... and that sure proves they last. As an ex-sparkie, yep would be perfect for wire stripping, but I didnt have an Opinel at all then, took me a while to trust the collar lock to be honest.
      Gift knives are such a great idea for those that will use them, I always go for a practical gift, rather than something that just sits around and collects dust.

    Another one for you to review is their chisel type knife…same great handle…same dodgy sheath…but 3mm blade and V ground blade.
    I purchased one about a year ago thinking it was chisel ground on one edge which is what I wanted for bushcraft “joinery” projects so was a bit disappointed when I realised it was v ground. (Not sure if I missed that fact on their listing or if they changed the description since my purchase as it definitely says it now)
    Anyhoo, love the sturdy feel for such a budget knife and you have reminded me to check out their other offerings.
    Actually, sitting here comparing handles with my trusty old Morakniv light my fire, I definitely prefer the Mora handle for grip…..

    Hello Mark if you can find one you should look at the Hultafors GK (GrosKniv) or Big Knife, it's the heavy duty model of the range, the blade us the same thickness, a couple of mm longer but wider with a little more belly and a BIG handle suits my 3XL hands unfortunately it's green. there are 2 'gussied up versions with rust resistant black coated blades the OK1 has the big handle the OK4 has a slimmer handle with grooves for extra grip both the OK models have a fabric belt loop the problem with those us they are priced somewhere between 2.5 and 3 times the price of the GK, finally if you are so minded you can get two knife sets two sheath clicked together one version has a GK together with a Craftman's model the kicker for this is while handy in UK at least IHMO I think it's ridiculously overpriced atb Bill

    Well guess what my friend you can use this hultafor knife as a primary bushcraft knife. Among other BRUTAL TESTS this specific model survived to be half buried into a tree trunk and then a 230 pounds guy stepped on it and literally started jump up and down on it. Guess what the knife not only did not brake it was COMPLETELY STRAIGHT after the guy pulled it out of the trunk. Do we need to say more for if this knife can be used as primary bushcraft knife ???

    Hey Mark! So is this the same Hultafors as the famous axe people?
    I think that’s an awesome back up knife. I tend to us a multi-knife as a backup, but how can you beat this? And frankly way more useful than that weird little fat Mora one.
    That fancy Finnish knife I got came with a gorgeous handle, but a pretty rough sharpening job. I think it was actually sharpened on a large wheel, so it wasn’t flat. Well. I had some spare time, and since I shave with a straight edge, I took out my stuff, and redid the edge. You can literally use the flat edge as a mirror now. Shaves my arm with ease…..not that it needs it 🙂
    I may have something interesting for you in a week or two. Just getting components in and I’ll let you know.

      @@MarkYoungBushcraft Ok, so sorry, but what I meant was is it worth the price for these fancy pants axes compared to say a $40 hatchet? Like obviously those are better, but are they really that much better? I got a Canadian tire hatchet for $30, and for splitting kindling and the odd little thing around camp, it works well.
      However I have done my share of wood work, and I do appreciate a quality tool, ut dollar for dollar?

      @@jimf1964 ahh... I have two Canadian Tire Garrant axes that I took the time to pick out good ones. I reprofiled the edges and refinished the hafts. They are really nice now but it took a bit of time to get them that way. They still don't equal the quality of the Hultafors. However, they chop well and re-sharpen easily. What more can you ask. If someone has the time to work on a cheap axe or an old axe they will end up with something that equals the Swedish axes. More or less
