Someone will profit from the name, image, and likeness of a college athlete. The question is, should it be the university OR the athlete? Which one? Which one already profits from ticket sales? Which one already profits from tv? Which one already profits from donations from the alumni to the endowment fund? People aren't asking the right questions here. And Coach Saban, no matter how much I respect this man, did not dignify those questions.
@berrey7 I hear you. But he walked away from that. I’m sure he will get some type of broadcasting job or something around football before he really retires professionally but just saying, he loved coaching.

@@berrey7 True. But Nick Saban is worth hundreds of millions of dollars at this point in his life. He has more money than he could spend in ten lifetimes. First of all, this is the hustle. College athletics is a monetary aspect of college. Yes, it has changed the game. It has allowed athletes to have financial rights to their image and likeness. Colleges have used this to their advantage forever. It is not set up to create opportunity. It is set up to create monetary gains. The athletes can now be represented and own part of the value they bring. The table is bigger and the seats are more. Some athletes will make money when they never could have before and it may be the only time for them. Others will be more successful and that financial aspect may grow for them. This is the new way. The old guard has to speak against it because they have held the cards for so long. But make no mistake some athletes get judged by coaches and may NEVER start a game. In that way, the coaches contribute to the LACK of opportunity. Great roundtable discussion.
Very true now it’s who pays the most players , they don’t learn commit they don’t learn when you fall you have pick yourself they leave jump ship just think if the players left would’ve stayed wow I don’t dis agree but there has to be a better way

Alot of these kids come from poor backgrounds, that NIL could help them and their families, I don't understand why people are against that .
We aren’t against players being compensated, or making money via NIL. What’s happening now is pay for play. These collectives are paying players just to commit and play for that team. They have absolutely no value with it comes to NIL as they haven’t played a down. If you are really for the players you would be on board to, because when they come in and underperform that money is no longer available. They don’t get payed millions up front, they get payed over three years in most cases. Not living up to the hype? The collectives just won’t pay and you will have to find a better deal or settle when what you’re actually getting. These contracts are drawn up in a way to where NIL is based around performance in a round about way. On top of that, when a player signs a $4 million deal it’s worded in a way where they have the “opportunity” to make “up to 4 million”. They just aren’t given that money. The Athletic posted several NIL contracts the past two years and every one of them has an out. The current system is bad for teams/coaches and terrible for players. Every player deserves millions IMO for putting their bodies on the line, but they are being screwed in this current system as well.

Coach Saban makes a lot of great points. It is terrific that some student athletes now have access to NIL/Collective payments. But too much money in the palm can quickly corrupt a person if not tempered with wisdom and discipline. Although everyone wants more money, obtaining large sums quickly can and has also ruined lives. Woody Hayes once said that discipline implies "disciples", those who provide discipline help guide young student athletes to become better people, in life beyond football. Coach Saban has been a disciple to many players over the years, but he may just make his greatest impact on student athletes for future generations with his efforts after retirement. Excellent work. Go Buckeyes!
The universities and coaches have been profiting from the labor of the student athletes for decades. Coach Saban wasn't coaching out of the kindness of his heart, but was extremely well compensated for his labor and rightly so. Why was it acceptable for those entities to enrich themselves? Only to provide pennies to the student athletes in the form of scholarships and other small recompense. There must be a more equitable system. The greed of the universities and the coaches has been exposed, and is the true reason that problems exist today.
I’ll meet you halfway and agree the universities should be spreading the wealth more than they do. But those “pennies” are worth about $80k. My non-athletic kids will be paying student loans the rest of their lives, and they didn’t have the benefit of personalized therapists, nutritionists, doctors, tutors, or handlers to guide them through the day to day complexities of cultural and academic life on campus. Even the back-up kicker who rode the bench all 4 years gets those basic perks, plus a college degree worth more than my house. Knowing how difficult it is for first-gen students to navigate all of that by themselves, and to pay for it for the next 30 years, I’m pretty damned angry when someone wants to pretend that isn’t valuable and call it “pennies”.
@@jamesjohnson-en3cu Understand. However, if the university makes millions selling a jersey with your name on it, and they are giving you a $700 a month stipend. How would you feel? Johnny Manziel claims this is what occurred when he was in college. That isn't right! The universities are now asking alumni to fund their NIL collectives and athletic associations, buy tickets and merchandise. The Universities are getting paid by ESPN or Fox. They still are not sharing anything with the athletes that play the game.
@@PoliticallyIncorrect90 ESPN will pay 7.8 billion for six years of the 12 team play-off. That's over a BILLION a year. College football players are not adequately compensated. In 2021 alone, the networks paid 800 million for the men's basketball championship College basketball players that participate are not adequately compensated. Other college athletes in non- revenue sports are more than adequately compensated, because they generate no profit.
Just call it junior pro sports. If it’s about money and “trades” for the best interests of the players, they should sign contracts and be fined when they break commitments jumping around in the portal. I personally have lost interest in college football, which is sad.
Houston fan here but that is probably irrelevant to the conversation. I 100% agree with everything former Alabama coach Saban said. Its the exact same way I view RUclips, it was never money in the beginning, just a place to upload your memories. Now, everyone is out to make a buck, nothing wrong with that there is a system and all that in place but its not the same as it was, the foundation of the sport of college football, and college athletics as a whole is slowly losing its way. Yes, these young people make money, their life is changed forever but how are they held accountable and understand the value of what they are doing? There are so many questions that come about while also needing a system in place but even then, how are we bringing the best out of people without artificially motivating them by money?
This is why I was never really on board with this NIL stuff. I agree players should be paid for their likeness especially if their school is making millions off them. At the same time though that should be a privilege AFTER these students have gotten on the field and created value for themselves.
@@rjp0824great point. Prove you're worth the money. Keep track of the players getting paid before they make their value on the field, and transfer when they don't get playing in the season since this all started. No one knows how these kids are going to develop at the college level.

I agree with most of what he said. However, I have a few points. First, the timing of the transfer portal open is horrible. Consider that NIL players are professional players that should be held to a professional standard. No scholarships for NIL players. No money directly from schools. Agents must represent the players. All NIL contracts must result in full payment of the cost of a 4 year athletic scholarship. The education fee must be paid before the player is eligible to transfer via the portal.

Total BS comment. If you can’t see the difference, then you’ll never get it. Universities hire people to teach. Ideally, they develop people to become professionals in their chosen craft. In the case of college football, universities pay head coaches significantly to develop players to do more than just play football, especially since a pro football career might last four years or less. Plus, football brings huge income to the university, especially for winning programs. Players already receive a free education, free food, free room and board, free transportation, free clothes, etc. They are not professional athletes. They are teenaged students. If on their own away from the university if they could sell their name, image, or likeness I see no issue with it. But there should be no assistance from the university whatsoever.

Concerning your potential conflict of interest argument, this is no different from an employer of, say, Goldman Sachs who uses his knowledge to engage in related entrepreneurial activities while still working for the company. There are no conflicts of interest concerning the current state of NIL deals, i.e. athletes are not receiving money to get inside information concerting other teams. There is definitely something in what Coach Saban says.. and NIL seems to be turning out greedy and undisciplined players only wanting money instead of understanding how values and discipline make you a better person and create a better success in your life!
Saban liked it when Bama could do NIL and no one else could, when others were allowed he saw no one would go to Tuscaloosa Alabama if you have another choice.. Any choice in the universe. You are welcome!
This is very hypocritical for Saban to say. You have coaches making millions of dollars a year and who will leave at the drop of a hat when they get a better opportunity without any regard for the players. Anyone in any profession would do the same if given a better opportunity. The truth is only a select few of all college football players ever have a career in professional football and they risk permanent injury every time they put on the pads. It’s UnAmerican for anyone to be constrained by a set of rules that prevents them from realizing their value on the open market. Schools make hundreds of millions of dollars off of these players and they are often cast aside at the end of their careers. I hate it when my school loses a player to another school but that’s their decision and who are we to question that? These coaches and administrators are there as in any other profession and that is to solve problems. Whether a player decides to stay at a school depends on a lot of factors and it’s the coach’s job to keep recruiting them every year and constantly convey their own unique value proposition as is done in any other industry
I agree. But it also comes with issues. Sagan says it in the video. Players have come to the NFL with “less development, more entitlements, and less resiliency to overcome adversity.” Why? Because the money goes to their head. You want the money? Go to the NFL. That’s where the big bucks are made. But now they’re getting a lot of money before ever stepping foot in an NFL locker room. So a lot of players, care less. Care less about being developed, don’t go as hard as players did pre-NIL, and don’t have nearly the work ethic to try and be a complete a football player….simply because they are already making bank in college. College athletes should be paid…to a degree. But not like this. What’s happening now is ludicrous. Steve Sarkisian had LAMBORGHINIS (that’s plural) on display for recruits visiting UT Austin. Come on, what the hell. Why even bother trying to be a great college player when you have that type of bread readily available?!?

God called on Saban to do another job that needs to be done.. I'll forever miss him being our coach but I know he's off to do big things and save college football

You really think God or our political body is really worried about college football? LMAO that meeting was held because of his friendship with the democrat lawmaker and that was the only reason. It was done and forgotten.
He’s so right. All these great college coach’s are retiring in mass or sprinting to the NFL even for a coordinator job. And the same’s happening in college basketball.
This is so sad to me, that college football has come to this, but Im proud of Coach Saban (He’ll never be just Mr. Saban to me) for speaking out on this and trying to come up with a solution to the problem. Roll Tide ❤️🅰️🏈
Only solution he’s trying to come up with is authoritarianism over people in a free country so they say. Imagine a panel of people who don’t write the players checks to determine how much they can make.
The Bear is rolling over in his grave. Saban is the voice for both. They didnt create players to how great they could just be at football but that in succeeding in life. They'll never be a more historic, tradition and an honor of succesd in college football then that of Alabama, bar none.
You're missing the point. It's a matter of developing future leaders of the nation. Not just professional athletes, these rules have an affect on all student athletics and most of these athletes will become leaders in business and politics. Did you hear what Saban said about the athletes becoming more entitled and less coachable due to the current rules? Do we want future generations more entitled and less coachable? On top of that the transfer portal is causing the graduation rate to drop. That's exactly what our country doesn't need, future generations of lazy entitled uneducated adults. And these are the college educated leaders of the future we're talking about. If Congress can make changes now that have a positive impact on future generations of college athletes it will have an overall positive effect on the country as a whole. It's not just for college football. Although that's the sport that has been affected the most. And when was the last time Congress did anything positive for the country. If they can agree on something like this maybe it could open their partisan eyes to see what's possible when they work together to improve the country instead of fighting all the time.
Our careers as athletes are like periods in the dictionary. We need everyone including college and professional athletes to be a positive influence in society. Money should never take priority over character development, maintaining high morale standards. Money can disappear but, not your character.
@@harryh.2464 Oh give me a f*cking break. You know regular students can transfers at anytime right? There no legitimate reason to not let players transfer when they want. I guarantee you don’t know one single football player’s GPA, but I bet you know their stats. If it’s about education, Why aren’t you advocating for the professors or school staff to get paid millions like the coaches do?

@jaredsmith4964 , kinda reminds me of the old south.
Nothing but the highest regards and respect for coach Saban.
I wish there were more coaches with his line of thinking.

Someone got REAL mad that he wasn't the only one that could get away with paying players anymore.
If you were to ask anyone, Nick Saban would definitely be the right one. He said it as perfectly and as succinctly as possible. And, to be even more clear about concerns, look at what the players’ parents care more about. It’s the money. Student athletes? Yeah, right.
ROLL TIDE!!! and Nick is 100% CORRECT and On POINT!!! ROLL TIDE!!
Not really Saban is just mad he can’t hoard 5 stars anymore hence why he retired
This little snake made 10 million a year and NEVER had to worry about an injury. Every single play, the players had worry that their career could be over. Good Riddance.
@@mas5867 exactly all these bama fans are just butthurt their team ain’t winning nattys anymore the illegal way of paying em under the table
thank you this is about the rich cannot get richer aka win more championships and pad his and the schools pockets anymore now other schools can!
Right because everytime they table was changed Saban didn't continue to win & dominate
Oh wait, he actually did change with the times and still win
True fact- why are so many Iof Saban's former coaches coaching big teams
This is why he is THE GOAT. A lot of people think that he’s whining and quit because the playing field is now even due to NIL/transfer portal and he can no longer dominate. That was never the case. Coach genuinely cared/cares about the players on the field and beyond it. That should be solidified now seeing as how even though he’s now retired, doesn’t have a dog in the fight, he is STILL saying the same thing.
#ROLLdamnTIDE
He said he quit becuase of this he is a quiter.
@@chasejackson7248 English please.
Saban made 12 million last year. I don’t know of any professor/teacher at a university making that kind of salary. They complain about money in academics but they don’t have a problem when they are getting paid. 😂
Hallelujah
He was a 7 time National Championship coach. He was a master recruiter. He brought immense value to the state of Alabama and the university. There’s no U of A without Nick Saban.

I'm so glad, Coach Saban has addressed this NIL and transfer portal that WILL destroy CFB if there are not rules and regulations put in place. Education will take a back seat to NIL. This has to be addressed now before it gets out of control.
I'm sure the gov. will fix this. LOL!
Remember their motto: We're from the government, and we're here to help.

Spot on coach! Roll Tide.
I watched Bret Baier talking with Nick Saban on Fox yesterday. Baier has done MANY interviews with MANY notable individuals but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him as genuinely happy to be talking with anyone as he was with Saban. He talked with Saban longer that he was slotted for. If he could have I think he would have kept talking with Saban for the rest of his show. I really enjoyed it myself.
He was paying players for years.
Notre Dame fan here. Agree with Coach Saban 100%. NIL is ruining college and professional athletics. Why even go to college?
I agree with Coach Saban 💯 percent. College Football has gotten out of hand with NIL. There needs to be boundaries and system in place. These young men are transferring anytime they don't get their way. It's unfair to the game and most of them are concerned about money. Last but not least some college football 🏈 players don't play in bowl games. It's not fair to colleges who give them scholarships.
@@GregH-qk7cx
Their college students not NFL pros. I'm totally against NIL, but NCAA should be a clause. One of the clauses is not to decline a bowl game unless injured.
@@GregH-qk7cx players can transfer an unlimited amount in theory. Multiple players by now are at their third school and never have to sit out
@@GregH-qk7cxcollege football isn’t “work” and no one is forced to play. You don’t like the rules of college football don’t play. They give you a free education, housing, medical, tutors, travel, etc. Way more than average students. Listening to activists who know nothing ruins everything.
@@zeerie7521 they are college coaches making more than NFL coaches. Make it make sense.
@@Allen4AU What happened to getting an education? Make it make sense.🧐
Coach Saban departure from NCAA football is a loss of the best there has ever been, not just as a superb tactician and developer of his athletes but his total dedication to the most important values and traditions of a positive college total environment for their future. If you listen to this fine gentleman speak, you are listening to a candid analysis by a true guru of a failing system that turns their back on character and personal development of the student athlete for one goal, money now. I am reminded of an old African saying that seems apropos…. “Beware when you replace the old values and tradition with the new, that you replace them with something of value.”
Or tie it to a multi-year commitment. You want this nice contract, you have to stay at the university X amount of years to get it. Where in the world can you get lots of money with no commitment? Don't fulfill your end of the contract, you nullify it and get nothing, that includes going to the NFL early. Hell, even early sign-on bonuses at jobs require some kind of commitment, like a year commit or you pay it all back. What are we teaching these kids nowadays, you can skirt responsibility when you feel like it. The world does not work like that, especially not the NFL.
@@GregH-qk7cx We also used to believe there is a difference between a professional and an amateur. Also, let them negotiate their contracts. That, too, is free market capitalism.
@@maxrichey5711amateursism is a scam invented in France by rich people who weren't good enough to compete with professionals. That's all.
These players are putting in the hours like professionals and getting injured and sometimes killed like professionals, why shouldn't they be compensated like professionals?
As long as the schools forfiet all profits and the coaches only make the salaries of the professors at the college. Sure I am all for that otherwise no deal. They make tons so should the athelete they are using to make it.
@@Allen4AU You get it, but I disagree with salary caps for either the coaches or students. Agreeably, neither the schools nor coaches should be participating in the NIL as part of the rules. For me, it is more about contractual minimums. For instance, the minimum educational fees must be consistent with scholarship costs and published. All parties make revenue consistent with their performance. Recruitment and retention should follow suit. Clearly, there is a lot left to determine.
TY for sharing and I am in total agreement sister in Christ.
Of course it’s okay for Saban and other coaches to get rich and switch jobs whenever they want. He’s full of crap.
You talk like every coach has his career. People are free they can switch jobs when ever they want and what you think about them doesn’t changed the fact that they do it for themselves, not to please you. We are adults, we can work where we want there’s nothing you can do or say to take away from this man’s character.
Saban was always ahead of everyone else on this. And people hated him for it
There will be a commissioner of college football here in the near future enforcing rules and Nick Saban will be that person.
@@GregH-qk7cx i think that's the point. It's going to take a whole new organization bc the NCAA pretty much failed with this.
And I’m pretty sure if any changes come about I expect the student and parents will go to court Nick S need stay on side

Money is not the root of all evil...its the love of it. Players should be paid via NIL. Absolutely 💯. But if a system is not put in place or a cap in place then its going to be a problem. Some of these college players are going to get to the NFL with more money in tow than guys drafted in the late rounds. How is that going to make him a team first guy or listen to coaches or veterans? It's already happening so get ready for more.
As an Aggie I didn't like Nick but I do back him on this. The current NIL situation has ruined college athletics for me it's no longer enjoyable
MAGA Saban showing his true colors
Here is something else to consider: we love college football for the rah rah rah spirit. That spirit is nurtured and appreciated by the alumni. They are your audience and your gate receipts, If that spirit goes so will your audience
NIL is the best thing that ever happened to sports. Kids getting a little money to help mom and pop.
Nick Saban was always paying players under the table, one way or another. That's how you have always built a team.
Oh hell. Poor coaches only making $12 million or so a year :.. on backs of unpaid labor. Bless their hearts
When I hear comments like yours I know not to take you seriously because you only parroting the hate narrative as a way to dismiss the conversation
@@Dolemite19no, he is right. The coaches and administrators have been stealing all the money. How you cannot see that is evil
@@josephroberts6865 someone that actually gets it .🎯💯well said my guy 💯👍🏿
@@josephroberts6865 Your argument doesn't stand up to basic Economics 101, Workers are paid in labor markets based on the value they bring to the firm (their marginal product of labor). Saying they receive free edu, room and board and should be happy with that doesn't hold up when the value they bring is potentially worth several times this amount depending on the player. Workers who are sign contracts more than certainly consider the wage offer when making a decision, not simply due to greed but in order to improve the standard of living of their family and themselves. Engaging in entrepreneurial activities while in college is legal and beneficial concerning ones personal development. Ultimately the question of its impact is an empirical one that should be tested with data using econometric techniques that establish casualty. Id be happy to read the results of your findings if you choose to pursue such a project.
There is definitely something in what Coach Saban says.. and NIL seems to be turning out greedy and undisciplined players only wanting money instead of understanding how values and discipline make you a better person and create a better success in your life!
Wow!
Roll Tide Coach!!!❤🤍
Players have come to the NFL with “less development, more entitlements, and less resiliency to overcome adversity.”
Why?
Pay high schoolers next?
They are on scholarships in excess of hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay their entire tuition. Relax dude.
@@BassYakCam You relax, it’s all about the value you bring to the table. If you yourself get offered a better job with more money and better benefits you would take it in a heartbeat and you wouldn’t care about your former employer. To say you wouldn’t is hypocritical

Yep. Lol. I love Saban but hes a hypocrite for this shit.

The nil deal and the transfer portal and the realignment of the teams in my opinion has made college football today hard to watch, I don't think saban is the first one to leave college football, I think that eventually other coaches will eventually get tired and leave too unless things change. There were a lot of die hard fans of college teams have walked away because of the current system in place in college football. Like saban said players today are more entitled
I've heard a lot of die-hard fans complain but I do not know of a single one that has stopped watching or supporting their team.
God called on Saban to do another job that needs to be done.. I'll forever miss him being our coach but I know he's off to do big things and save college football
There's Only ONE homie. You must be talking about your useless, fake ones....including You. Guess you think you're a "god" huh? That's your new CFB COMMISSIONER, show some respect
So you’ve been fine with everyone else involved with college athletics making tons of money instead of the actual players providing the entertainment
The Bear is rolling over in his grave. Saban is the voice for both. They didnt create players to how great they could just be at football but that in succeeding in life. They'll never be a more historic, tradition and an honor of succesd in college football then that of Alabama, bar none.
What a leader coach Saban is on and off the field👍🏻
There is no more tradition in college football. Transfer portal and NIL has ruined college football. All we needed was this 12 team playoff.
I think the Senate needs to focus on shit that matters.
This.
Doesn’t.
There’s been no study done to correlate transferring with graduation rates. You’re just saying things. You have not a single source to back up anything you’re saying. I guarantee you don’t know one single football player’s GPA, but I bet you know their stats. If it’s about education, Why aren’t you advocating for the professors or school staff to get paid millions like the coaches do? They haven’t paid players since the begin of college sports, how has the benefited society as whole? This is the silliest logic I’ve ever heard. How many national leaders has Nick Saban sent out into the world so far? SMH
Correct. Politics needs to stay separate from church and sports.
How about we stop sending money to Ukraine, amongst several other problems, and when all of that is solved then you can speak on bullshit topics like these. The Government needs to pull their head out of their moneys ass. Because those fuckers only care about money and not us.
