- Well fellow Aviators, I wanted to knock the rust off after having not flown for a few days. I did not realize how rusty I was. The good thing is now I will get with my instructor and make sure there are not any more holes. Thanks for coming along!

When traffic permits and current winds favor a straight in - I will visually fly the instrument approach just to stay on top of the cadence of an approach and avionics familiarity. That was something that my IFR DPE recommended.
I like to do the same thing.
When you determined it was a teardrop entry. Consider stating the heading you are turning to for the teardrop (30 degree cut) for 1 min. Then fly the outbound heading until reaching the required DME, not 2 minutes.
With instrument flying, always think what’s next. With automation/autopilot make sure it’s doing what you expect it to do.

Very educational but I couldn't to stop looking at the passenger door handle not being closed.

So good for you! It is almost guaranteed that you will be rustier than you think you are. I tried to fly my Mooney at least once a week. And I would keep a eye on the weather and when KSNA would forecast a marine layer coming in that would be held by Saddleback mountain I would plan to get up early to fly the approach. The night before I would get on the computer and fly the approach on Microsoft flight simulator over and over.
Then the next morning I would take off from Banning in completely clear skies even though KSNA would be 0/0 with tops at 4000'. SoCal would ask if I was aware of the weather and I would let them know that this was training and I wasn't expecting to land. The added benefit was that the commercial flights couldn't even attempt the approach. I would do approach after approach having the airport to myself.
Nothing inspires confidence going to minimums and then doing the missed over and over. I really think that this really helps with safety since going missed becomes second nature. When I wasn't using my plane for months at a time I sold it since I wasn't keeping up my skills.

@@TheFlyingSalesman I am now building a "professional type" simulator with force feedback yoke. It's going to simulate my Mooney 201 with the new glass panel I am putting in. It will be on a steel base and Harbor Freight wheels. To stabilize it I bought four $15 scissor jacks that I will weld onto the base.

Hey Matt, in real life you would likely have caught this as soon as the autopilot did not make the turn after passing the fix. You were obviously distracted by explaining to us (via the camera) what was going on. I appreciate your integrity in posting it in spite of that.

Being picky here: At 15:37 you requested to proceed inbound on the RNAV GPS rwy 5 and ATC responded to proceed inbound for the approach. At about 16:29 you hit NAV and APR to intercept the GP, but as I understand it you still had not been cleared for the approach. Were you? Maybe edited out?
Great catch! I did edit it out. If you notice, my audio levels were not set correctly and ATC transmissions were louder than usual. I was monitoring both tower and approach and the clearance for the approach was a loud mess. Hence the edit. I was wondering who would catch this.

Because RUclips is one of these social media sites where, if you posted a video of you going to the bathroom, someone would be telling you that you’re not using the toilet paper correctly, you’re not washing your hands properly and the big one, your toilet paper is hung in the wrong orientation. 😂
You are very welcome. I do not mind the criticism because I look at the intent. In all of @RetreadPhoto's remarks, his constant theme was "Fly the dang plane" (my words). He is not wrong. It is advice we all need to hear from time to time. I have even harped on this and now I have four fingers pointed back at me.
Of all the things about YT videos, it the engagement with each of you that I enjoy the most. The people of aviation have ALWAYS been what I love about my job. I found it very hard to be precise and concentrate flying alone in VFR and trying to do instrument procedures. It is best to have a safety pilot and be under the hood or use the simulator because you have to divert more attention to outside the aircraft than inside. You’re not getting the training if you’re basically, trying to fly instruments with 80% of your attention outside the airplane. 90% of my IFR currency is in a Redbird simulator.
I agree and if you will check out my preflight planning video of this flight "How to plan practice IFR approaches" I say this very thing. I just did not practice what I was preaching.
@@TheFlyingSalesman I flew an IFR flight plan a week or so ago in VFR weather. I took off. From an uncontrolled airport and when I read back the clearance, they told me read back correct and rattled something very fast about void time. I had completely forgot about what that meant until he repeated it. When you flying in an uncontrolled airport, they give you a readback correct and you are cleared into the system with like three minutes or you have to report to them that you’re not off by three minutes. Normally I fly out of a towered airport so that was kind of a new in the learning process, great video keep them on coming!

I wish you would have spotted it before I took off. They should put that on the pre-flight check list. Oh, wait....
