Hey guys! I recently got a lulzbot taz 6 and I really wanted to print a usable project out soon! So behold.... one of my worst performing rc boats ever :D (funny thing is I replaced the prop after the first run and its much much faster now...
the lifeboat is based off the ones seen in the captain Phillips movie and the boats used on ships that go through heavy seas.

Eventually you need to make a pump propelled jet boat. Should run well in the shallows.
Maybe make one more fun with a second pump and a servo directed nozzle, so you could run it up to stuff and spray water with it.
I really want to make a jet boat! it will be done soon! probably next summer though! Got to get better at 3D design.

My dad and I just watched your video with the big tug boat. He used to work on the Irving Oak tugboat and later in the coastguard. We loved that build.

Peter, you need a magnetic switch, so can seal the boat up. The magnetic switch will allow you to power on the boat with the magnet and also try a phone charger wireless charging system. Hight kv motor and a few 3.4v lipos so you can still use a wireless charger. It would be an awesome design
that wont work, mainly because the wireless chargers are very inefficient
You are missed at FT at least by me. Not sure I like some of the new guys there. I still think you were the brains of the outfit. They have the guys in shipping comming up with all the great ideas now,what are all those other guys for. Dont care for Stephan at all,he is too busy screwing around to get things done. Kinda reminds me of a Kings court clown jester. Doesnt contribute but makes people laugh ( except me) There is nothing wrong with your design,that life boat was designed to save lives,not be a high performance boat. I keep thinking about how you took a cheap WalMart toy boat and really hopped it up. I did that to the Monica,a german made RC fishing trawler that I upgraded it to hobby grade. I still need to add the smoke generator I bought for it and change the slow motor to something faster,better. You keep comming up with all those great ideas buddy! Hope your trip goes well.

Me too i loved watching flitetest when peter was around,now so boring. Peter is by far my favourite flitetest guy then its david
+Ashish Mathew I look at the Flitetest crew as goofy really clean cut mormon kids. They are all so wholesome that it almost makes you sick.
Peter and David are every bit good guys but I think there is a devious side to them that might scare the good kids. Like all the really good bad ideas come from David and Peter and the good kids are just kinda uncomfortably spectating.

here is a challenge for you, build any plane you want BUT, replace all tape and hot glue with sticky tack.i really want to see what you can come up with, P.S it looks very cool when you crash that sort of plane.

If you mount the camera to the print bed when doing time lapse it makes for a different style that I prefer, If you do another 3D print lapse you should give it a shot.

I could be wrong, but the foam you used looks like the type of foam that absorbs water, waterlogs and will sink instead of float. I'd suggest you test it, cut a small block and submerge it in a bucket of water, put a weight on top to keep it down, and then check to make sure it still floats after being underwater overnight. This is kind of a worst case test, but it will prove whether its suitable for flotation or not.
I know the foam you speak of! and yep this foam floats, it does hold some moisture but it doesn't seem to affect anything on my projects where it has been underwater.

If that's ABS, you could try solvent welding instead of epoxy (brush acetone on the joint and hold them together). Also vapor smoothing to make it more water proof?

Love the whole video and the idea. Especially love the filming and editing of the whole building process. Guess all the work you did at Flite Test has left a good mark on your skills. hay Peter I recommend that you get a heated bed and a abs head. also there are a few really cool channels out there that show some cool 3d printing tips. nerdgasm has some videos and also James Bruton has some sweet videos.

To get a better surface finish and counter the top weight it would be a good alternative to use the 3d print as a mould and make the actual hull from vakuum forming...
