Two of the truly essential greats of cinema. Kind Hearts & Coronets is one of my 50 favorite films and Lavender Hill is not far behind. The twist endings based on the characters telling their backstories are two similar features of these narratives and kind of an Ealing trademark. Seriously iconic stuff and I put little credence in anyone calling themselves a film expert if they haven't seen these.
Another new supplement since the older Blu-ray is my audio commentary track, a mix of extensive research and analysis that originally appeared on the American Kino release five years ago. I hope you enjoy!
Very useful review. I like you keep the review comparatively short but cover the film synopsis, the quality of the 4k, a quick look inside the extras, and your view of the film. So i just bough LHM 4k from hmv.
My mom is visiting and I just received my copy of “The Lavender Hill Mob”. So we popped in the disc last night. That, Kind Hearts and Ladykillers are three of my all time favorite comedies now. I’ve seen all three within the past year. Amazing stuff! We laughed last night through the entire film. Dry British humor has always delivered for me over my life, but it is really taking root as one of my favorite things these days. My next stop is the limited edition set of Flying Circus from Network (RIP). I am so excited to get started!
Love the Ealing comedies and just scooped them up for my collection. Looking forward to giving them another watch on 4K. Great coverage of these classics.
Great video Elliot, thanks. My copy of Kind Hearts arrived yesterday, very much looking forward to watching it again, finally in the best presentation possible. For me, this is right up there with the greatest films ever made. As much as Alec Guinness got all the plaudits for his fantastic performances here, I do think that Dennis Price's performance (or performances, as he also plays more than one character) is just as brilliant, if not more so. Every time there's been talk of a re-make I've shuddered but, thankfully, it still hasn't happened. Masterpiece.
I’ll definitely be picking up KH&C - one of my favourite films of all time - I was recently looking into getting it on Bluray glad I waited, hadn’t heard about the 4K.
Good presentation Eliot. I first saw Kind Hearts and Coronets as a member of the Virginia Museum Film Society in 1970. What a great film! Skipping to one of my favorites that's not as well known, have you seen Last Holiday?
I bought the full Blu-ray edition of Kind Hearts & Coronets when it came out. I saw that the 1080p version was taken from a 4K master, like many StudioCanal releases and always assumed that it would eventually be released in 4K. I think I'll get the standalone 4K version and use it to replace the DVD from my original set. I love most Ealing comedies (especially) and have most of them on either DVD or Blu-ray (sometimes both).
Ealing Comedies are fantastic. It is great to see them getting a 4K restoration. One movie I would love to see on 4K is the 1960 School for Scoundrels.
Ohhhhhhhhhhh KIND HEARTS on 4K?! Fuck YES! I'd get all 3 just for the hell of it! Sucks I wasn't gunning for international editions when the hard-case Blu was out.
Got my copies today Lavender Hill Mob will go nicely with my Ladykillers 4k set. Shame the box set of Kind Hearts was only a bluray disc as would have made a nice 4k trio.
Very helpful reviews, thank you. If I read you correctly you are saying the current Blu-ray version of Kind Hearts has the same restoration? That version has a lot more eg booklets, posters etc and is cheaper.
Great stuff as always Elliot. I wonder if we should expect a 4K release of The Third Man from Studio Canal this year? I believe it’s the 75th anniversary, if I’m not mistaken.
I love Ealing comedies. I remember the Ealing Studios box set was one of the first DVDs I ever bought while studying film at uni. Hope we get The Man in the White Suit and Passport to Pimlico at some point. Just out of curiosity, has the racial slur been edited out of Kind Hearts and Coronets?
Nope, no edits in there as far as I can tell. There's a usual disclaimer about historical attitudes etc before the film plays but that's on every disc Studiocanal do these days. That scene with the racist language is intact.
@@ElliotCoen Good, because at the time many people didn't actually use that word in a racist way ( whatever racist means these days). My dear old Nan ( I am in my 70s ) used to buy N brown shoe polish, and would actually describe some brown colours as N brown. There wasn't a nasty bone in her body, she was a sweet old lady, much like miss Lob Sidey from the film The ladykillers
@@ElliotCoen Elliott I saw your recent video about you loosing your energy for your channel, it's perfectly normal to feel that way. In fact if you didn't I would be worried, I am subbed to an Astronomical channel and he went through the same thing, but came back. It's good to take a break, and do something completely different, only to return to a topic or hobby refreshed. You wouldn't have a soul otherwise 😎
Thank god for that - I always hate when they show Dam Busters on the TV now - poor old N*%#er always becomes the dog with no name 😂 it’s only a matter of time before all in print physical media of the film goes the same way. There’s no place for that type of thing in modern society, but don’t change history.

These are real classics and very rewatchable....

Fantastic; you've addressed all my questions about these 2 releases, including what the contents of the Lavender box looks like.

I picked up the Ladykillers set awesome package and 4k Restoration many fine childhood memories of watching this with my Dad.

The Lavender Hill Mob 4k box.

I've been on the fence about these two for a while, so this was a very helpful video. Thanks!
Have been wanting to watch both of these for years. Will be picking these up on payday
Enjoy them when you get them! Cheers

Parts 2 and 3 of an excellent trilogy ... here's hoping more of the Ealing classics are given the 4K treatment.

Aargh! I already have all 3 movies mentioned on blu ray from Kino Lorber. Still tempted.

Ah, so that's why I couldn't find the deluxe Kind Hearts 4K box. Golly, I don't want to double dip so I guess I will settle on the 4K. Bummer.

Cool...when does it come out in America through Criterion? 😅 Studio Canal tends to do that

Will there be a standard edition of The Lavender Hill Mob 4K ?
Just tell the kids: "Obi Wan Kenobi is in all the Earling movies" 😆
Please tell us whether the releases are Region Free or B only.
They’re region free
4K discs are region free by default. The blu-rays included are region B only.
Off topic I saw your opinion on aliens 4k transfer. Because of it i canceled the order and stick to the old fox blu ray. Before the Disney purchase :)
I hope they release a 4k version of "The Importance of Being Earnest" , I have the BluRay of that but the soundtrack is just terrible.
Both excellent films, but has Kind hearts & coronets been ' edited for modern audiences ' in any way?
Nope, no edits in there as far as I can tell. There's a usual disclaimer about historical attitudes etc before the film plays but that's on every disc Studiocanal do these days. That scene with the racist language is intact.

@@ElliotCoen Another thing, your style is similar to the presenter of a TV program The old grey whistle test.
I used to like that programme
