I think he loved her enough to let her be herself. But the problem lay in the fact that Bong Soon could never be herself with him. We see this same interaction a couple more times before the influence of Minhyuk pushes her to be a bit more outspoken & confident (at first because he annoyed her lol). Minhyuk fed her confidence. Guk Doo fed her insecurities. I do not think Guk Doo is a bad guy, just a very bad romantic partner for Bongsoon.
