Riskiest Opal Cut Ever: From Beautiful to MASTERPIECE

- This video involves cutting a fantastic 83 ct opal cabochon, initially cut in 2014, but rejected because "It Looked Like Death," because of its gray background.
A 7 1/2 ounce parcel of seam opal from Mintabie, South Australia was the starting material. I show how I cut one large piece from that parcel to make the 83 carat opal cabochon in 2014, then I re-cut that stone in 2021 to make a fantastic new cabochon, one of the finest that I have ever seen.
I also pan for gold at the end of the video
Thank You for sharing your world with me.You do what we all wish we could.May you keep doing this for many more years.
I watch your shows all the time. I'm an old goldpanner who has never owned an opal. Prettiest rock I have ever seen!
As an earthling female, I’m telling u we would definitely wear a pendant that big
@@PulitzerOpal Yes I'm a Miss. Earth contestant, so you know I have the right credentials

I love you show and you differently make a Veteran laugh when he’s down. Thanks much and God Bless
This was the best looking opal I've seen so far, Death by Opal looks incredible.
I'm glad you enjoyed the opal! "Death by Opal" does have a striking appearance, and opals can come in a wide variety of beautiful colors and patterns. Thank you for your appreciation, and I hope you continue to find opals that captivate you!
I will bring red white and blue fruit dessert. A barrel wine, A keg of beer, barrel whiskey. That should cover should cover about everybody's drinking, Except for Sheila she'll need to her own his own barrel of wine. I absolutely love you channel. Hours and hours of giggles. Stay true to heart and Keep doing what you love. Your wife just must be a really patient person With the heart of gold.
This video was great! I loved the end, you panning for gold. I've done that once with my youngest son & it was awesome. Who knew you could order it right to your own home! I always learn something from you sir! Thanks!
I will be bringing a large appetite for opal conversation and the other kind of appetite too. Looking forward to meeting Sheila
I was hesitant when you wanted to cut the main stone. Afterwards absolute perfection. Don you have taught me more than you know. How to isolate color for stones.
Это чудо из чудес:нет слов, чтоб высказать красоту этих камней. Спасибо вам большое, что можно посмотреть как вы обрабатываете такую красоту
My mother is always eye popping excited everytime I share your videos. She is 81 and I have been making opal jewelry for a few years. Love your work and comedy 👏 the orange red of that last stone is breath taken in
Gorgeous seam opal. That red is outstanding! 👍 😃
OMGosh those stones are beautiful. Thank you so much for the invitation Mr Pulitzer. When I can get out of New Zealand I'll bring the best NZ roast lamb rack with fresh green mint sauce and sweet orange, gold and purple kumara bake to accompany it. Pavlova with whipped cream and fresh strawberries from the garden for dessert Yum yum... now I'm hungry!
This is Tracie with that dang spell check on hahaha. Thank you so much for all you two do. You should braid her hair again
You have such a nice sense of humour. Much love
Just found your channel. So far I'm really enjoying every video I watch! Better than any silly opal TV shows out there. I love learning about different stones. Thanks for doing what you do!
I would bring pink champagne...and toast to your health and humor! Seriously though...that would be an amazing party!! Thanks for being you...totally awesome!
2:05 I cracked so damn hard, hahahaha. Col. you're a treasure mate! Kind regards, my friend.
I wonder why so many watch a great video and don't click on 👍🏻 like? That diamond in the rough is spectacular 😍. I'm now craving corn fritters and brats.
I now understand the title. I am currently having my fifth heart attack and we're only 6 mins in. That show piece is just jaw dropping. It's the first opal I have ever seen that looks like my pic. Amazing. I feel better about life just having seen it, lol. ty peace
@@PulitzerOpal Sheila didn't like it, hey. Did she get all choked up? Ba duh duh....She's so empathetic, big heart on that girl. Well, at least she got back to it....
It really is to me. Idk that much though. I know reds are more rare and valued, but it's not the color shade. For me, it's the robustness of the stone, and density of color. I said that about my pic, bc, I guess I've seen better opals, but they are usually that green blue twinkly space scene, with the other colors, sparkling inside, you know the ones. Or, they are really distinct, solid patterns, like a harlequin.
I'm thinking as I'm typing, Justin just interviewed a guy that found a big blue one, like I just described, and I wasn't nearly as impressed with it. .... I guess, it is probably because your piece represents, to me, more of why I love opal, that's cz of it's uniqueness, beauty, light qualities, just sitting in the dirt outside.
Actually, I'm torn between Black and Crystal. Add clarity to the list, and your stone would be unspeakable. Imagine, a transparent, yellowish hue, packed with that color, so thick you can't even see through the transparency. Would look like candy, my friend. The very best kind of candy. Even better than rootbeer gummies.
Bo knows ... deodorant.
Peace
*I feel I should note, so I'm not taken as a brownnoser with a motive, that I very regularly leave novellas for comments, everywhere, every day, on any subject, even when I fully expect to be ignored. I enjoy expression even more than opals;) So, you know, expressing my thoughts on opals, well, maybe take a seat. And I have never entered any type of contest on YT, nor would go out of my way to do so.. haha
I'm also lonely, and pathetic. ...don't tell Sheila that.
Death by chocolate cake to celebrate the Death by Opal success🤩 I hope someone brings a bit of fruit along to this dinner! Corr that's seriously lovely, your wife is blessed to have such a handy hubby! Any colour as long as it's opalescent is the best colour..
I'D TAKE ANY OF YOUR SOCALLED OPAL SCRAPS! Beautiful work as usual. Quite a bit of gold there in that box of dirt. Gonna bring my delicious custard bread pudding, and a velvet pouch to bring home my winning opal in. Thank you Mr. Opal man.😁
It looks like the pot luck will be vey popular, so I'd be bringing a selection of cheeses (I need something that travels well.) I'd mingle with the other guests in my favourite floaty purple dress and admire the stunning opals displayed. Thank you for the videos and the invite, Colonel!
Canadian here. Love the video. I would bring pot to the pot luck. Nice green legal Canadian buds. 😀
Sweet tea and red solo cups 🥤. Beautiful stones. Especially the "Death by opal"
Oh Mintabie! Had a good chat with Murray Willis the other day, bloody loves a good opal yarn, as do I!
He always cracks out some beauties for a drool.. Thanks for sharing!
Love your vids got me addicted to opal across the pond
Oh and favorite color is purple and I’m bringing cookies
I love your content, I will watch every video you’ve ever posted, they are all seriously that good!!
Maria, 48-year-old from Pittsburgh, PA. It would be a dream come true, truly, to put a face to the man who filled my insomniac nights with visions of opal I can only dream of owning...if only I could just go to sleep and dream ☺️. You also filled my belly with laughter from your sense of humor that I look forward to. I, in turn, will bring homemade (Czech) Lady Locks and homemade poppyseed rolls to fill your belly with.
W-O-W, I would be hono
Death by Opal is stunningly beautiful; the unique shape highlights a unique gem that has ALL the colors. For your 50k celebration we really should all bring a selection of new ..high quality...rough to continue the party to 100k & beyond!
Love love opals. Love watching your vlog.
daww touchy and paco are so cute! I have two orange cats, Buster and Dinosaur. 10 yrs apart in age.
50k pot luck, I’ll bring a blue chair, that’s a lot of people to seat. As an aside, what a stunning opal, I thought you were nuts cutting that stone, but focusing on the high quality part, genius.
@@PulitzerOpal well I love it. Glad you bought it back from the vault
I’ll be bringing a barrel of RED wine, from Australia of course to toast the arrival of DBO....what a spectacular gem! Loved the find in your gold panning postscript too and HEY! I am a subscriber, have been for awhile now. Just love your videos. ❤️ The embedded cat tussle was a treat too! Get ready to decant this fabulous red wine...there should be just enough for 50K or so .... Cheers!
I would love to have an OPAL Pendant for my wife, but I'm a retired English teacher. Could never afford something like that. But I love watching your channel I find it very interesting.
Seeing that stunner in a beautiful setting would be amazing🤔👍🏻
I really like the imperfect specimens. Lines of black potch give the illusion of astrophotography. The mix of stone and gem of boulder. The beauty of nature
Man is that absolutely beautiful! Fantastic gems
Omg i cried when you cut that stone OUCH!!!!!
Really fun video and some real pretty opal. Can't wait for the party! I'll be the one who is bright green with envy and I'll be bringing a whole lot of respect for your mad skills.
Might also drag along a few bushels of Maryland blue crab, mallets, and bibs.
Isn’t everybody bringing green beans? I would bring those hard sour candies that cut the roof of your mouth then burn. Thank you for another great and wonderful video.
How thoughtful of you! ;)
It wouldn't be a true Pulitzer Opal Potluck without bringing our opal collections to look at. Also gotta love orange
Haha the goldtongue - brilliant, must trademark! Oh yeah and I would bring a pie made from opal apples!
I love the reckless approach you take!
I want that kind of attitude!
Just dive in to the world of reckless adventures that turn out amazing!
The ending was awesome.
All the stones are beautiful
I have actually panned gold on Lynx Creek, near Prescott Arizona. One of the most beautiful places I have ever been. Got some good gold too.
Classic green bean casserole..mmhmm..my favorite. Also, favorite color is green which, to me, represents life and growth.
I'd give you my soul for that darn gorgeous end piece. Wow I'm dueling and tearing up lol
Love your humor!
Just beautiful! Great job!
That sheild is the most amazing opal with such beautiful colors .
I’ll be bringing my mommas famous Broccoli casserole in the same vintage yellow Pyrex dish that she’s been using since dirt was created. Thanks for the video of Death.
For the potluck, I'd bring some Fireworks - I love aerials with lots of RED in there.
I was hyperventilating when you started carving up that big cabochon initially, but you were dead on with that - the parts are greater than the whole, especially the 41.09 ct Death by opal - just beautiful!
i love the shape of big stone...great job
Glad we have someone who is "certifiably crazy at the wheel."
OMG! You never cease to make me giggle!💕💕💕 I’m thinking a case of Captain Morgan will be appropriate to bring!
I'll be bringing Some Purple plum pie to the pot luck ! Beautiful opals. They are such amazing gorgeous gems stones.
5 carat of opal what absolutely beautiful.
Beautiful reds in there!! Awesome pendants! Great work new you!! Lol
I always thought opal was a boring stone, and Ive been collecting rare and unique gems since I was ten starting with raw unfaceted garnets from a creek my grandma gave me.
Your channel proves opal tops them all.
And Sheila really pulls through.
Sheila should run for Congress since she is a talking head and all hhahhahaa.
Butterfly pea flower tea . It's blue and turns purple when you add lemon. Color changing tea. Pretty tasty stuff , lemon and 🍯
I'll bring the pot and a 4 leaf clover. Thanks for another fun video
I'll bring the biggest egg plant you ever seen! Great video, love your humor
So nice to see you put on your big boy pants and cut the opal as the pattern dictates. The centre stone you cut is probably worth considerably more without the detracting pinfire on both of the edges as well as being far more appealing to the eye. By far the best cut i have seen you produce so far.
@@PulitzerOpal i was not saying you are afraid to cut. You do some very brave things with the shapes and styles you cut. Arrowheads, shields and natural shapes are far more risky than ovals, circles and cushions. Cross cutting is also a path less trodden. Consistency in the facing pattern is just far more MY taste and to see you bring those lovely stones to life in this video was a real pleasure.
I will be bringing some spare ribs and cash so i can try to buy one of your wonderful opals! Lol..Another great video!
Haha you had me in hysterics with the rubber tongue, who knew they even existed ! So I nearly had a heart attack watching you cut the opal, and I nearly fainted watching at how beautiful the final opal turned out do Death by opal sounds about right !
Mike @ Vendetta Prospecting sent me here. And glad he did, great channel
I'm going to bring a new wig for Sheila to the potluck. I'm thinking a black asymmetrical cut with teal and pink tips. Pretty cool.
My favorite color is purple. 💜
Sooo excited!! Finally another video!!
Lucky wifey. Do you need another ? LOL When I was much younger a friend gave me a pair of opal earrings. Not knowing anything about Opal I sat under a hairdryer with them on.. You know how my story ended lol. SAD! THAT is BEAUTIFUL!!! 50,000 Subscriber huh? Ok, Have you ever had Crawfish Etouffee? I have the best recipe ever from my mother in law who has passed. She was a true Cajun from Lafayette Louisiana. The woman sure knew how to cook. I will bring it if you tell me where the party is. My favorite color is Teal . lol Love watching you clean those Opals up. The end results are amazing.
Beautiful Opals. New to your channel but I am subscribing. My birthday is in October and have always been interested in Opals.
great looking stone mate love it
Good video my friend, well done once again (mark H. Las vegas, bali)
Beautiful opal cut beautifully 👏👏 well as I am retired, I think a feast of fresh prawns and mud grab would be a congratulatory feast. Clearly, our feast would be served on an Orange table cloth 👍👏👍 love your work
Yum yum 🤤
I'm im love with the smaller end piece
50,000 Pot Luck Dinner well I have a bottle of 90 year old Port given to me by a dear friend and a bottle of 60 year old single barrel Scottish Gold that was a gift when I visited family in Scotland.
If your going to great party you need to bring something great as well.
My favourite colour well that would be pink, why cause my daughter gave it me to and nothing means more to me than to see that girl smile.
Thanks for the video, I loved watching them and can't wait for more.
Sparkley video - amazing! SO interesting listening to your strategy for enhancing the value of this piece - piece by individual piece! I really enjoyed seeing this particular video and your largest gem here was simply out of our galaxy colourful! I am bringing Famous Canadian dessert selection of Butter Tarts, Nanaimo Bars, a 50 gallon barrel of Pure Maple Syrup and .... some Ice Wine from the Niagara Falls ice wine vineyards! A sweet time will be enjoyed by all EH!!!
@@PulitzerOpal Pffft!!! Maple FLakes???? I will send you some solid Maple Leaf Maple SUgar Candies Mate! :-)
I will be bringing a couple pages of jokes. Most of them will be corny sappy jokes similar like yours. hehe. If that doesn`t please the crowd I`ll bring a bag of cotton candy .That always puts a smile on your face lol. Cheers from Canada.
No opals were harmed in that video, just improved to keep Sheila happy, nice cameo from her. Paco and the gang are back at it and they have requested pink opal cupcakes to bring to the 50K potluck dinner. Can you grind up some potch scraps for the party and sprinkle them on top of the offerings. And more like more gold than the Hoffman crew ever dug up! As for the tongue I suspect Sheila contributed to that scene…. Note we can’t see a tongue during her opalholic confession… Well done Colonel! On to the next video.
I am pretty new to watching this...but you make it look so easy. I know it isn't. But.....watching you is almost like a drug....I'm hooked..Oh I'm bringing a smooth
yellow coconut cream pie to the party....
Nice one colonel. Thanks for the invite to your shin dig. I think I will bring my RED hot wit with me to the partaaaayyy.
Great Video, as usual. I would bring some Flowers for Sheila ... and a few german beers!
I'd bring a bottle of cheap 5 dollar wine and some chips, like the man of culture I am.
Oooo isn't that a lovely stone? I will be bringing my appreciation for opal ... and maybe I could bring a veggie tray with carrots cut into the shape of roses. I wish I could find the purple carrots with yellow centers, they always look wonderful as flowers.
What a beautiful stone! Thanks for the video.
Please leave the panning to others you are a grinding expert, Hee Hee.
I would happily bring a silver spoon. Love your videos
Of course I would take a green sea cucumber pickle for dinner. I haven't forgotten your priority list in past videos.
Turned out a sweet stone keep on the grind
that shield piece a real stunner wow
Im bringing Parker, more paydirt, and fresh mahi-mahi to the dinner. Also favorite color is that electric blue we saw on that opal.
That pale blue next to the red really pops!
Good sir I will be bringing hand repair cream for all our dry sanded skin, and a sturdy gold pan for our main man! Much love!
Oh and Ofcourse I’ll bring some purple punch
That (those) were the prettiest opal I've seen cut in quite a while, people overlook the white opal too much, but I also like the shield cut too, would look awesome with a couple smaller princess stones paired next to the queen stone. In black opal my favorite color is the blue and purple broadflash, but in white the red and magenta colors really beam out of the stone, almost look backlit rather than a reflection like black opal.
If I attended you 50k party, I'd bring my portable Diamond Pacific Pixie grinder (weighs about five pounds with the little table its on), so people could cut small bits of color while they were there, without feeling intimidated by the 'bid' machines. I'd also bring a couple fresh bottles of superhot-pepper sauce for people to try with the food, the Zombie Snot flavor is my favorite and is the mild one, still about four times the heat of Tabasco though, but great green salsa flavor. I'd also bring some Fear This to see if people were brave enough, I like it in ramen and chili though, just a couple drops at a time, so maybe you could sneak it into the food a little. I have a couple unopened bottles in my fridge if you'd like to give them a try, part of my Winter supply to help me stay warm, but I have lots >3
@@PulitzerOpal The portable Pixie is a little half-sized 4" grinder with two diamond wheels on one side, and a vertical flat-lap surface on the other, with a nylon enclosure bolted on a sturdy piece of particle board with rubber feet on the bottom. I think it was made in the 1970s for prospectors to use in the field, it's very easy to move around. I've cut a couple hundred stones on it, even bigger 20-30 ct. stones, but it's only 1/8 hp so it's easy to stall/stop it pressing too hard, keeps from digging too deep into stones too.
I would bring a really good bottle of brown liquor. And we could make a toast to opals. Thanks for sharing this video. ❤️
I will bring my wife, and she will be Green with envy over that stunner of a stone you cut!
I’d bring the greatest assortment of Wisconsin cheese and beer you’ve ever seen. Green and Gold baby! We can watch the Packers win a Super Bowl this year!
Ssooooo I think I'll bring Mississippi caviar to the potluck!! You'll love it and we can admire all of your opals while we munch out all day long...yyuuummmm...afterall, who wants Turkey anyways...lol? Keep up the amazing work and funny videos!!
How about I bring some premium marinaded beef tongue to the celebration of your 50,000th subscriber? I really appreciate both your beautiful opal and rather bizarre humor. Gold dusted rubber tongue for a size comparison! Ha ha ha
