WHAT GIVES CORAL ITS COLOUR? Most hard coral polyps host symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) in their tissues which provide colour pigments. Usually each individual polyp hosts only one species of algae. Soft coral polyps have their own pigments in their tissues, independent of algae. Corals are rapidly becoming extinct due to environmental pollution.
