  • “Labour’s mantra is that it has no plans to increase the taxes of working people…When politicians say they have no plans, it usually means they do, but they're just not telling us.”
Andrew Neil is joined by The Times’s policy editor Oliver Wright and economist Liam Halligan to dissect Labour’s manifesto.

I honestly think America needs a completely restructure of their political system. It is just not working. Trump and Biden being elected out of 300 million people to run the country is evidence for that too.

This is why the US should elect more progressive politicians, who know how to manage budgets and give us (yes, pur country's initials literally spell out that pronoun) much better tax credits in return for better public education and better public healthcare. but since these are nonexistent, my husband and I are being guided to finance our retirement and healthcare through a diversified investment portfolio

What Labour hasn’t admitted is that the home owners, landlords, motorists, all business owners, pensioners, and many others will be hit with tax rises. Just going about our daily lives car fuel taxes will rise, vehicle licensing will rise, insurance will be taxed, access to towns and cities will be taxed, ULEZ will be everywhere. Taxes on food and drink will rise. Everything will get more expensive so taxes are raised for Labour’s pledges.

Serious question: why is it that Labour pledging to keep the main 3 taxes at their current rate is so intensely scrutinised but The Tories pledging tax cuts left and right isnt? If the economic forecast isnt great how could the Tories afford to cut taxes without making major cuts to public services? This point never seems to be analysed. Their focus is to increase taxation as its primary means of increasing public spending. This has been going on for years and is draining the prosperity of everyone regardless of class. There needs to be a wholescale revolt against a political system that is directing the peoples savings towards individuals and corporate interests that makes a few much richer and the poor much poorer.

As to confusion well that's merely an extension of what's been happening over the past coupe of years where Labour has been trying to be all things to all men. More rights for workers and business growth for example don't sit comfortably together and there are many similar examples of policy objectives which seem at variance with each other. History tells us in such cases you either upset one half or your voters by pursuing one of the objectives and not the other, or compromise on all of the objectives and upset all of your voters.

Very good discussion. Andrew Neil always nails it. Of course, we can all rely on Labours Manifestation Policies. Now I'm going to click the heels of my Ruby Red slippers and go home.
But really! Can we keep having these characters we see in government leading this country? Gordon brown who said in a meeting in America that he didn't know how banks work. Fine figure of a Chancellor of the Exchequer. Rishi Sunak who walks away from Normandy in a well planned routine laid down months before by himself and his advisers. Then, to add insult to injury, conjures up a sudden General Election and times it for July 4th. This was no accident.
The truth about Parliament which people need to see through if they have not done so is it is just Smoke and Mirrors. One party passing the reigns to another when things get tough so that citizens think things will get better.
Here is a perfect example: Labour is going to get MI5 to tackle the criminals who are responsible for people trafficking. So what was the previous Conservative government doing, getting MI5 to turn a blind eye? The answer is a Chicken and Egg answer. Parliament are putting themselves above MI5, because MI5 should be doing this job around the clock, not when asked to by a new government. This should be a security routine else what are all those COBRA meeting about? Oh! Sorry! My fault! I didn't hear right. They are COBBLERS meetings.
