      @@gsczo I have the inability to art as well, but pick a style that you may be able to do and play around with it. I ended up having to stick with pixel art, because "stickman" is about the level of my abilities, but I've made some nifty things... none of which I've used in a game though lol. This is lovely to hear how you found a whole community and amazing that you spent so long persistently making stuff, especially over a year of daily art. I just discovered Core, but didn’t realise it’s a creation tool, I haven’t loaded it up yet and they described it more as an arcade full of games. I’ve had an idea for a cat game for ages since I got three kittens last year and they’re hilarious, I don’t suppose there’s a basic cat model to edit. I draw and paint some, but the oomph goes too easily, I just got back into gaming after a while and you saying ‘I was a bored artist’ resonated. I’ve been wanting to do more with characters I was writing a story for too, heck I even learned code a few years ago, but my passion for websites waned and I found I didn’t love battling all my errors enough to keep going. So this all seems fun 😁

    I have a question, I've been wanting to become a game developer for a few years but the longer I've waited the more I feel like there are too many games and too much competition, would you say you had any problems with these sort of feelings and do you think I should go through with becoming a game developer?

    • @Vimlark
      @Vimlark  3 года назад +21

      I'm all about encouraging people to give game dev a try. You don't have to try to make "the next big game" to enjoy the hobby and connect with others. I was never discouraged by how many people are doing it, I more just wanted to be part of it and make things. Give it a try and see if it's for you, the nice thing is there are a lot of free engines or at least free version so you can start without any cost other than time. Best of luck on whatever you decide to do.

      Concerns about competition and market saturation make sense if you were trying to develop AAA games but if you just want to develop indie titles, then you really don't have much to worry about. It's not a very competitive space, people just want to have fun and share their creations.

      Think about how people start projects in much older mediums like oil paint and dressmaking. I think to embrace your position as beginner takes a lot of heat off you. "Of course I'm not Bethoven, I'll just have fun and mess around". That's a good attitude to have. It's for you to enjoy. You'll never be good without being bad first. Every success stand on piles of failures. And enjoying your craft is what makes you want to practice. So, essentially, the less serious you take it, the better your project will be. You can have good work ethic and set clear goals of course, just don't pile stress on yourself. Find the fun.

    Just ran into this from a newsletter from the game dev marketplace. Great to see this content. Ive been developing secretly on my own for a few years and have yet to come out of my hole to the internet, BUT recently have started assisting high schools create gaming clubs and branching off into the industry, where I'll also actually teach game development. Idk why I didn't also think about starting a community for game developers who are already here, when my entire portfolio and skill set is buildings communities for a living. Truly, thank you for the encouragement, the inspiration, and motivation to get out of my subconscious in development.

      @@bonejacked3302 i dont know about core but roblox does. and you actually need to learn code (Lua) and 3D design your own models. Theres is a library of models for you to use but its kinda lame. But roblox community has a lot of children. a game to be SUPER popular is to target the game community to children so you get more players. the downside is a really good game of yours wouldnt get that many players because of the community. So, check both roblox and Core but also Unity.

I'm a full time software dev now but in high school I taught a one week workshop for interested middle/high school kids with the goal to teach something STEM/computer dev related, but was given the freedom to teach anything. I always went with Construct since it was the perfect mix of learning core concepts really quickly and having solid visual feedback to what you make.
