      I'm pleasantly shocked that Maekar acts like a loving father to request Dunc to take Aeg on as squire. I have not read any of George's books except the GoT series, so I don't know the storyline of KOT7K. In my personal opinion, if this show / Episode 5 doesn't win some awards, there is no justice in the world. I must admit, the Baratheons are a persuasive family. Next to the Starks, they are my favorites. WHEN will Season 2 be shown?

      It would have been nice to have Lyonel be book accurate as being almost as big as Duncan himself, but I’d rather have the charisma and aura that this actor portrays. Great casting.

      Man, I never read any of the books or watched any of the other GoT tv shows but I did watch this one because I liked the jousting scenes that I had seen through Instagram. I already knew that he was going to die from the moment that I heard how good this guy was when Dunk was hyping him up to be as a very liked Targaryen among the common people but I was not expecting them to do it this early, I was starting to warm up to him because he did seem a lot more genuine and he was a good man in comparison to his other family members in the room. Shame they killed him so soon lol

      That’s kind of why it’s pissing me off it’s such short episodes, they are saving a shit ton of money on cgi. I really don’t understand why there’s not more character building. 10/10 show but wish there was more

    • @MarianJones-ff4zp
      @MarianJones-ff4zp 28 days ago +7

      @SaveTheWesttI hear you, but the show is pretty book accurate. Each episode is pretty much a chapter. Maybe they don’t want to go off script too much and chance making some misstep like they did in GOT. Besides, it’s new and you want too leave people wanting more.

    Nobody seems to mentions that Aerion is the real reason Baelor was killed. If he just accepted Dunk’s trial by combat, there would be no trial by 7 and he wouldn’t have had to fight.

    • @stephenmcarthur8490
      @stephenmcarthur8490 28 days ago +27

      Daeron is the true villain here and does not get enough of the blame. He is the only person in the entire situation to lie and make a false accusation at Duncan. He then cowardly slinks away during the fight, potentially leaving his father and brother outnumbered and to die. Had Daeron not included his own false accusation at Duncan, then there would have been no basis for the Trial of 7, and then Aerion would have had to 1v1 Duncan.
      Weird that no one else online seems to be recognizing what a POS Daeron is.

    Poor Maekar man. He was just trying to protect his son and ended up killing his own brother who he loved more than anybody but his own children. No wonder he was noted as being a "stern and cold" man. It's a miracle he didn't turn into a psychopath from the grief.

    • @diannebdee
      @diannebdee 28 days ago +9

      Protecting the entitled son he raised. I really have no empathy for him. His eldest is a drunk. His second son is a narcissist. His third son wants to get away from him and go to Oldtown to be a maester, in effect shunning everything his father is as a Targaryen. And the youngest rooted for a stranger he met in an inn. Doesn't say much for Maekar as a father. That part in the trailer when Valar says, "Why would the gods take him and not you?" I think is to Maekar. Basically he's saying why did the gods spare an ineffective prince and take the bravest of us all, my father.

      @S0M3GUY778 27 days ago +12

      @diannebdee I get the impression that Maekar is trying his best. In his defense, Aemon was sent to the citadel because Daeron II said there were too many heirs, and Maekar was not happy about Daeron II sending Aemon to Oldtown. Maekar is trying to better his sons, not well, but he is trying by making Daeron participate in the tourney and Egg squire for him.

    • @TheUnicornOverlord
      @TheUnicornOverlord 27 days ago +6

      @diannebdee Valarr was saying that to Dunk (You can even see Dunk replying "I've wondered the same" in this trailer) he was wondering why the gods took someone who could have been the best king in westeros and not some lowly hedge knight, that was taken directly from the books. (Maybe because Our guy Dunk has a big role to play in the unseen future which I do not want to spoil)
      .
      "My father was only nine-and-thirty. He had it in him to be a great king, the greatest since Aegon the Dragon. Why would the gods take him, and leave you? Begone with you, Ser Duncan. Begone"

      @Fiendishfool For non book readers Ned Stark was the main character and most famous actor though. It was unthinkable in most traditional television. Baelor is more like Oberyn to the show watcher. A quick fan favorite, but not much screen time and everyone knows they’re side characters. In fact, oberyn pledging to Tyrion and baelor to Dunc are obviously very, very, similar moments in books and television, from the same author.

    I think part of the reason why this series so far has been so good, is that they pretty much stayed close to the source material. I think it's nuts that the last thing Baelor says to Dunk is:
    "I need good men. The realm..." and that's when he can't finish the sentence because of his brain injury.
    What he probably meant to finish saying is "the realm needs good men" but what literally happens at that moment is the realm loses possibly the *best* man, Baelor himself.

      He wasn’t wrong though. The Kingsguard wouldn’t hurt him, his brother and nephews wouldn’t hurt him. And that Fossaway dude would also not be dumb enough to risk hurting the kings’s son and heir. What happened to Baelor was just bad luck. So while Lyonel could have been more respectful, he isn’t wrong in any way.

      @SJW906 It is strange to say that after Baelor died. It would have been different if he said it before.

    • @Pedowood
      @Pedowood 27 days ago

      Lyonel is probably alluding to how he lost the favor of the gods with his faux honorable act of siding with Dunc and being dishonorable by taking advantage of the kingsguards' oaths. He risked very little since no one on the opposing side had any intention of killing him. Baelor has everything to gain by siding with Duncan and will gain favor from not only the smallfolk but some of the noble houses as well. You can see Baelor's fate taking a turn when he faces NONE of the kingsguard, as if the gods are forcing him to fight nobly. Baelor and Maekar duke it out at the onset of the battle and it's his brother that ends him. Baelor tried to cheat a trial by seven and the gods made him pay for it. Aerion and by proxy Maekar also pay for invoking a trial by seven against an honorable, innocent, and just person. The gods protected Duncan and punished the Targaryen offenders.

      The show is great and I'm looking forward for more. But this short, slowburn, lower-budgeted, smaller scale type of show could never recreate the hype the main show had. Like prescribing aspirin for liver cancer. Like no matter how good the Mandalorian or Andor was, it couldn't have saved Star Wars.

    • @valscottage
      @valscottage 26 days ago +1

      @prointernetuser Personally, i don't care about hype. I just need a good show and AKOTSK is delivering. Shogun is very acclaimed but had nowhere near the hype of GOT. But in my opinion it's a better show overall. Perhaps, shows that run too long are destined to fall off hard.

      @HaterImmunityAll CGI is cheaper than it has ever been. The problem is the directors are getting lazy and "we can fix it in post" has become the norm, drastically increasing the workload of the vfx guys.

    • @Beany2007FTW
      @Beany2007FTW 27 days ago +1

      It's less that it has 'budget issues', and more that it didn't need a huge budget, and that was likely one of the reasons it was greenlit - they don't have dozens of shooting locations across several continents, and the need for huge amounts of CGI in many shots and all the rest of the logistical nightmares that brings in.
      But as a result they have less budgetary 'slack' to work with. When you have $20m per episode for ten episodes, quarter a mill for more stunt shots is a smaller percentage of the total than quarter a mill on a $10m per episode budget for six episodes (which is broadly what the difference is between HotD and this)

      @eddarby469 28 days ago +6

      I watched this and I immediately said the lance wound was overdone because that was a fatal and debilitating wound in itself. Then you have the sword wound through the area where the femoral artery is and he would have bled out in two minutes, unconscious in less. Then you have an half-dozen full flail strikes to Dunk which combined would possibly be fatal, and then you have the dagger through the hand that could end a knights career. And you have whatever happened to close Dunk's eye and cause him to throw off his helmet. The dude, even if we dial all that back to be miraculously non-fatal, would be bedridden for two months before he could start walking around and packing his stuff up.

    Lyonel Baratheon looks like that guy you want to party with all weekend, but act like you don’t really know at work because he’s too much and is going to get you in trouble. (This is all Aerion’s fault, Dunc’s best bet is to just stay with Egg. Aerion would’ve tracked him down and had him murdered anyway.)

  • @dkreshaw
    @dkreshaw 28 days ago +4

    it was a good episode. i am a big fan of those dunk and egg books. i wish they would have incorporated baelor's "use tourney lances," because they were longer by an extra 4" to make him more of a strategist for dismounting / not perma harming the other 7. also, Dunk wasn't stabbed that many times in the books. first lance attack, 2 mace attacks, then it went to Dunk's flea bottom approach, just punches. finally, Maekar approaches Dunk with his kingsguard at his tree while drunk is recovering to discuss the future of Egg. i think GRMM did a better job on the writing if you believe that Baelor was smarter and Dunk was a better fighter than what was shown. love your content, Charlie.

    Interesting perspective here... So many things had to happen (the butterfly effect) for Baelor to have died the way he did. Of course, the lying is what set up the whole Trial by Seven, but I wonder: if Daeron hadn’t lied about Dunk abducting Egg, would he have had to join the melee? If not, perhaps a more skillful knight would have fought. Because Daeron took a fall and acted dead, it changed the numbers. Baelor and Lyonel Baratheon ended up engaging Maekar together when Aerion was in danger. While fighting with the ferocity (and honestly the laughter) he was known for, perhaps Maekar would never have had to swing his mace so aggressively-a swing that ultimately caught the back of Baelor's helmet. So, in the end, all of Maekar's sons (minus Aemon) are responsible for the death of Baelor. Egg lied about not being a prince and befriended Dunk, dragging him into a Trial by Seven for protecting Tanselle. Aerion attacked Tanselle, lied, and then cowered from a single trial by combat. Finally, Daeron lied and took a fall, which forced the remaining fighters into desperate positions. I guess in the end Maekar's bad parenting killed Baelor?

      @livingdeadgirl5796 No that's much later, you are confusing Rhaegar with Rhaegel xD. Rhaegel is the eldest brother of Maekar, thus Egg's uncle (Aelora and Aelor are Eggs cousins). Aelor dies in a tragic accident.
      When Egg becomes king, he has several sons. Jaehaerys II rules after he dies, then Egg's grankid follows which is Aerys the Mad. Aerys has 3 sons: Rhaegar, Viserys and Daenerys. Rhaegar marries a Martell and has a daughter which is like 5 or so and a baby boy. The boy called Aegon and the daughter are murder by the Mountain during Rob's rebellion.
