On a cold day in December 1954, when I was seven, my mother, father, my little sister and I walked down the stairs shown @:37, got on a train to Southampton, got on a small boat that took us out to an ocean liner, sailed to Hoboken, New Jersey, and took a train to Sacramento, California. On cold days in California I often proudly wear my blue and white Gillingham Gills scarf.
Born on the outskirts of Gillingham and lived for the first 12 years of my life in this area. Know it all so well. I'm now 66 and it has changed so much, some for the good and some bad. But that's progress. A very enjoyable video. Thanks for the walk.
Same here, I attended Byron Road Primary School then onto Upbury Manor Secondary. We emigrated to Australia 1972. I was 14 at the time. Which schools did you attend❓ I could cry looking at this footage. It’s nothing like how we remember it 🥲🐨
Ditto. Spent many times waiting on this railway platform with my Nan back in the 60' & early 70's when I was very young. Left the country 50 years ago. Zero regrets
I am so happy this video exists. This was a walk I did starting in July 2021 till October 2021. It was at the best time of my life. I have good memories watching this. I hope this video stays up.
Great video, I lived at Mill House 75 Mill Rd from 1968 to the end of 1974 and where Medway college is now, back then it was MoD mostly vacant, un-used scrub-land with Nissen huts, secret tunnels, underground bunkers, radio transmission masts and air-raid warning towers.. Sometimes thye MoD (probably the army) would conduct military exersizers there and occasionally they'd test the air-raid warning sirens early on Sunday mornings... For us kids it was a place of adventure and intrigue. We ended up moving across the world when I was 14. But I have many happy memories of life in England.
Thanks, really interesting to know what Medway was like back then, I’m fascinated by the underground bunkers and tunnels, there’s a few videos here on RUclips about them
We moved to Australia in 1972 £10 Poms 😂. I was 14 at the time . I lived on Albert Rd, Gillingham. Where did you move to ❓ Yes, it most definitely had drastically changed since we lived there. It looks soo sad now 🥲🥲
Fantastic video, thank you for filming and posting. It's been many, many a year since I was last in Gillingham and so much is different. Almost everything in fact. However, as would be expected, St. Mark's Church and the War Memorial remain unchanged. Also, does anybody else remember when the unit that is now Card Factory was David Greig? Amazingly, at 4:47, if you follow the line up from roughly between "a" and "c" of the word Factory, it can be seen that the old circular David Greig sign is still there. A very enjoyable watch indeed. Thank you again, very much.
I was a little 'taken aback' at the changes in this area when we visited July 2022. It seemed very run down compared to twenty years ago. And turning the 100 year old Prince Albert pub into a Burger King was a drag.
Moved from Gillingham in 1988 to Ireland. It has changed so much !!! Only recognise Southern Belle, Brittania, St Marks Church and the war Memorial. Thanks a million for this walk though.
I see the hobby shop opposite the church, by the bus stop has gone, spent many times gazing in the window waiting for the bus as a kid. Used to get all my toy farm and zoo animals there.
What happened to it 🤦♀️ It soo depressing. Where do people shop ❓ or don’t they ❓ it’s nothing like the place I grew up in. There’s absolutely no resemblance 🥲🐨🦘
I am moving to Gillingham soon and I ve been trying to do my research... but the reputation portrayed by comments is always not good. Is Gillingham that bad?
I notice you’ve received No replies. It’s absolutely nothing like it was when I grew up there 1960-70’s before we moved to Australia 🇦🇺. I hope you have moved in and settled in 🫶🐨🦘
@@florence2095 I am playing it up tbf, but I would say atm yes. It isn't the worst place in the world to live but over time it just feels more and more empty and neglected and to stay just feels stagnant. No hate to any individuals tho its no ones fault more than local government neglect.

He prob filmed this on a early Sunday morning. But regardless, it is not too far from this on a regular time. Just more tramps and more trash on the street. In fact in some ways this is a good representation of it.

I miss this place
It’s such a good area
Gillingham town itself is a depressing, souless, little hovel, but...the Country Park and Strand are nice.

Yep, graveyard vibes
Excellent video about Gillingham. Thanks a lot for showing me around. Is it a good town to live in ?
No!
Yes and no. It’s got good job opportunities and only an hour away from London. But it’s full of trash and crackheads and the people are miserable
Nice one thank’s for the vid.
Thanks for watching
Prostitution drug dealing murder and theft is expected in Medway people come for the real first hand experiences you will not be disappointed
Oh my, how it has changed since I grew up there in 1960-70’s. What happened, how was it allowed to be destroyed 🤔🤦♀️🐨🦘
This looks like luton Town centre but that is always filled
Does anyone remember where the convent school was ?

It’s only ever ok to begin life in Gillingham, not to seek life there. It is merely the starting point not the destination
